My truck did the same thing, then it went under the knife for years... Don't take as long as I did.
I'm not good with timelines.. let's just put that out there..
I walked two miles in 39 deg cold with shorts on.. that kinda sucked cause I'm not built for the cold..

Why not an NV3500?
LOL I had a 3500 in my s10... behind a 4.3 it wouldn't shift at 5500.. no just no.. road ranger or nothing.. 13 spd
The V8 version is better, and there is a guy here that recently swapped one in behind his 5.3 LS after killing a couple of 4L60e's. He loves it...

I had an 88 GMC with a 350 TBI and the Getrag 5 speed. I used to tow a 6000 lb trailer through the mountains with it. No issues, I just didn't tow in 5th gear. This was the weakest year for the 5 speed too. The NV3500 in later years was much stronger. I think these get a really bad rep for less reasons than the 6.2 does.
That's fine and dandy but I have a 4l80 and I do not have a nv3500. So if ya want send me one and I'll try it..
In the short term, install another plug-shaped block heater and keep on rocking. You'll have even nicer starts during the sub-zero weather that you never have.
Any guesses as to your time frame for the swap?
