84 K20 "Ethel" Not an Sbc/NV4500/241C

Semi restoration of a 1984 K20 pickup. 5.3 LS, nv4500, np241c.
lol, in the PNW people think engines are worth gold, in CA I could get a running 454 for around 400, up here 900. same for diesel engines, 600 for running ones..

I guess you haven't messed with injection pump timing yet? Smoke at idle can be pump timing, and you can advance pump timing pretty easily. If you look down at the top of the IP where it mounts to the block you should see a scribe mark on the block and one on the pump housing. The width of the scribe line is enough to make a difference...

I found one part the rats totally obliterated.. I am not even gonna mess with this, I'm going to order new sockets and be done with it.. At least it will be an easy fix.
Waiting on the title so I can drive it already!

Oh I cleaned up the gauges but still was not able to get an oil pressure reading.. I found out that if the sender isn't plugged in the glow plugs will not cycle..

There is a two prong sender on the back of the passenger side head.. I assumed that was oil pressure, I couldn't find anything on the drivers side.

That is the temperature switch that activates the cold idle solenoid on the IP (not what controls the temp. gauge). The heads match, if you look at that spot on the driver's side head (front of engine) you'll find the sender for the gauge. Not sure why they're different. :dunno:

The oil pressure sender is buried behind the GP controller at the back of the driver's side of the block. Near the oil filter. It's not particularly easy to find, IMO.

Ok I think I tracked the pic of its location on the inter webs, I'll see if I can find it tomorrow!

So I put new radiator hoses, replaced the fuel filter and tried to repair the tail light wiring.. I discovered I have a bum water pump.. So at this point I'm going to wait until I have the tags in my hand before I put anymore time or money into it.. The fuel filter housing must be leaking from somewhere also.. Kinda bummed I didn't see that water pump weeping..
