84 K20 "Ethel" Not an Sbc/NV4500/241C

Semi restoration of a 1984 K20 pickup. 5.3 LS, nv4500, np241c.
Found this as I have had problems with broken starter bolts in the past. Twice on a 6.2 burb and once on my stock 350 k5. The first time it happened I replaced the broken bolts with super mondo (ok grade 8) beefy gold plated bolts. Those also broke shortly after which made it even harder to get the bolt fragment out. Never even heard of the brace until now :doah:

I see. Looked at starter pic again and basically they kept the stupid small block style of bolting it up and its not enough for a diesel. I'm used to ford and medium/heavy duty diesel style where it has three bolts going straight back in line with the starter motor so no issues. Haven't had to touch a chevy starter in at least 10 yrs I bet.

Yes, yes, yes. This is one of Chevy's bad judgement calls, IMO. Coming from more serious engines, the 6.2 starter mounting method looks downright stupid. Now that I'm thinking about it, even my 2.3L Lima 4-banger (Ford) has 3 longitudinal bolts. Not sure why Chevy thought vertical bolts were a good idea.

And I might hafta disagree here, especially since I still hafta take the nut off the front end of the starter. So I wind up getting 2 wrenches and dealing with bolt heads in both locations. Not sure how that's easier than just taking bolts off the front end (or a flange like some have).

Hand crank FTW! :haha:

Ouutttt!

That was supposed to be posted around 4-5 but my phone was being stupid..
I made a bracket by hand, no I didn't get any pics but I got some slomo to verify that it does not move when starting.
