84 turbo diesel suburban

The only test I know of for the accumulator would be to run the engine then shut it off and press the brake pedal and see if it still has power assist from the accumulator for a few pedal presses. I have never done just an accumulator, I have only done the entire hydroboost booster.

If you aren't low on fluid, it does sound like the pump isn't performing.

Why change the accumulator? Is it not working?
I did test it and it doesn't work, as soon as the engine dies no power assist.

Yeah looks like I am getting new everything, except I can't find the hydro boost new, only remanufactured.
Is there anything out there that is worth the extra money or do I just get the remanufactured one from napa for $125?

I'd just do the reman from Napa. Kinda a crapshoot wether you will have problems with it or not but for the most part I've had good luck with Napa reman stuff.

It does sound like the pump is weak aside from the hydro boost issue.
I converter my 67 f250 to power steering and hydro boost. I used the Thompson pump for a Ford fe engine.
It would not allow me to turn and brake assisted at same time. I had to get a special Saginaw pump, this pump was able to work both at same time.
I have changed @ 80-100 hydro boosts, not once have I ever had an issue bleeding the hydraulics.
I always use power steering fluid on Hydra boost. I know old school was atf, but I think atf is to heavy for Hydra boost.
Good to see it's back together, to bad your wife does not care for it.

Yeah I don't like using atf but it had atf.
Now that I have to change everything I will switch to power steering fluid.
As for bleeding, I was fiddling with the engine a few months ago and it was low on fluid so starting the engine got it foaming and I didn't wait enough.
After sitting it settled, I topped it off, worked it with engine off and it was good. I think it is just a bad pump

I had to get 2 rebuilt hydro boosters from Summit, the first one started leaking a week after I put it in.

Are you particularly determined to have a working accumulator?

If I were in that situation, I wouldn't rip out a good working hydrobooster and replace it with a parts-store rebuild. That's a crap-shoot, trading a known good unit for an unknown unit, just for a feature that hardly ever gets used.

I drove a whole lot of miles without ever realizing mine was broken. Losing brake boost isn't a huge issue in my book. It's not like the brakes stop working. Losing power steering is more annoying than losing power brakes.

To each his own...

I decided to drive it a couple of days around town, and most likely I would change the pump next week. I noticed when I hit the brakes whether moving or stopped I feel very subtle pulsating, I wonder if that's a sign of the pump not getting enough pressure or the booster failing?

The way I have very little requirements for driving a vehicle but my intention is to make driveable by anyone including a prospective buyer. I don't want to replace everything with new but I do want to have everything functioning.
I did put a new not rebuilt master cylinder because the other one was bad.

Yes, that is what an underperforming pump feels like. And it will feed the booster first. The booster sends whatever's left to the power steering box (which is why P/S fades first when the pump can't deliver enough pressure).

You definitely need a pump. But an accumulator should only affect the system during that brief moment after the engine stops.

So I had been running it short trips trying to figure out the hydro boost and I decided to go a little longer, forgetting I have a leaking radiator, so halfway I was pushing it hard up the hill and it overheated and I coasted it but it died.
It had been giving me trouble starting it cold, the pinion was grinding and barely starting, well hot, it didn't want to start.
I let it cool down, jumped it, charged the batteries and nothing, finally reading @campfire 's thread he mentioned his starter going out, having the same symptoms, so I bought a new one from DB electric through Amazon and put it on and what do you know, it lives.
Now to change the radiator and power steering pump.

It's pricey but Wilwood makes a setup.

Yeah I don't need wilwood, stock replacement new for $150 I think I will get it

No worries, I was just putting it out there. They are super compact for clearance issues I'm avoiding.

My 85 K20 6.2 had an aluminum one that was a factory replacement, with the oil and trans cooler and it wouldn’t get over 210 in 29 Palms Ca. Never found a brand but it was awesome.
