'85 C30 now a K20 - Grandpa's Truck

I'm not sure if you can run stock length springs on a b52 hanger, but I'm sure kert can customize some for you and put an extra hole or two for stock length springs :thumb:

One day in the future i'll be giving Kurt a call with a nice fat list of things :deal:. That would be sweet if he could cause Then it would give me my new body mounts and have the option of going to 52's years down the road...

I haven't decided what springs to run in the front, but i got quite a bit of time before i need to buy them anyways. I'll check into them Procomps.

Got the same springs, seem to ride/flex pretty decent :waytogo:

Yep. I have 10" of travel at the shock (so more at the wheel), and could have more with these springs. Having to limit travel due to brake line length and not wanting to build new shock towers yet. Sometime in the future I'll build higher shock mounts and do longer brake lines and see how much more I can get. Don't know if I'll ever need more travel than that though, and I do reasonably challenging rock crawling.

My 52s are super soft....but I like it that way! They work awesome off road - fast and slow! But I personally wouldn't run the pro comps.... there is a spring rate on here....found it...http://coloradok5.com/springratetable.shtml I would run the Tuff Country springs, One Man's Opinion...:D :D

It's true, the Procomps have a higher spring rate than the TCs. Were I to do it again, I'd probably have gone with the TCs. But, like I said, the springs have never been the limiting factor in my suspension travel. Additionally, I know that Pauly383 had/has the Procomp springs on his Blazer, and he's certainly put them to the test! :D Also, with that said, my springs are a few years old now too - so they probably have gotten a bit softer with age and use.

funny you mention about having two trucks...i have the 84' C20 burb that needs a trans. the same guy the frame came from was kind of interested in it. he has a C10/Th350 with a 6 cylinder that uses more oil than it holds in a week with a damn nice body on it. me and my buddy know the guy well and he said hed let it go to one of us for a grand. being he was interested in my burb that has $700 into it i offered the burb and a few hundred for the C10, he said he'd think about it. thats better than a no! im not getting my hopes up but if this pulls through ill definitely have to reconsider/reshape my plan :thumb:. only time will tell, at this point nothing will happen until i acquire many parts.

As i mention back in the post above, the guy i got the frame from came and looked at my C20 burb with no trans last night it was last, it doesnt have a battery in it so i didnt start it for him but he seemed like he liked it and it had a bunch of stuff he wanted. Guy called me up today and asked if he could come back over and we could start it up, i said by all means come on over. She fired right up and sealed the deal for me. So for the burb in rotted out condition and no trans, plus 200 bucks, i got a damn nice C10. if you take the 700 i paid for the burb plus the extra 200, plus the 100 for the frame. i basically got a running driving, damn near rust free C10 with a K20 frame that has a 14FF and what i believe is a D44 8 lug for an even grand! He also said he most likely wont be using the body of the burb and said before it goes to scrap i can pick over whats left and TAKE it, also he said i could have the factory marker lights of it.
Now this definitely throws a monkey wrench in my plan.. Pretty sure the C30 is going to be left alone since it is a running driving truck that we just put together and the newly acquired C10 and k20 frame are going to breed to become a good mild DD that i wont be afraid to have fun with! :woot:

I know, i know all this talk and no pics. soon very soon ! Gotta trailer to burb up to his house tomorrow then get to DRIVE the C10 back home :thumb:. Pics of all said vehicles to come!

That is a way better plan! :thumb:

X2!!

well the burb is gone, i remembered pics of it, but by time i remembered pics of the new truck it was dark. i was having to much fun driving it!! :haha:its an 85' c10 with a 250 straight six and a th350. one tiny rust hole behind p side rear wheel. also came with a grandpa style fiberglass topper. heres the pics of me towing the burb to the guys house.

edit: o and the burb is WAY crustier that it looks in the pics, almost the whole rear barn door sill is gone so the p side door hold the d side in cause the latch rotted off! and the bottoms of the doors and rockers were barley on it haha

the two rallys for the back, as you can see one had a bad belt so he threw on two others he had

both spot behind the rear wheels were a tad crusty but not bad at all

DSC03682.jpg

the monstrous 250 inline 6, PO didnt have the PCV hooked up so it kept puking oil out the breather

PO fab work

DSC03685.jpg

PO was nice enough to replace the rivets with bolts when he rebuilt the leaf packs/bushings

DSC03687.jpg

not necessarily a bad thing but he welded round stock all the way around the rear front hanger..

DSC03688.jpg

crack free,as you can see the one body mount is messed up

PO notched cross member and moved p side mount forward to fit a 292? i believe it was

Glad to see youre gonna keep your grandpas truck nice. I do know its hard to have something and not use it, but I know you would regret it down the road when it was just a destroyed pile of parts... at least I know I would.

My ford DD I have now was my grandpas truck too, and theres some big plans for that down the road, but none of them are 4 wheeling. I have my beater K10 for that.

And the first time sheetmetal gets messed up on the C10/K20, youre not gonna cringe as bad for sure.

exactly! got something lined up for the drive train, but im not spilling the beans. nothing crazy there is just a huge story behind it that ill tell later.

scored a set of four 36x12.5-16.5 TSL's for FREE, yes for FREE from a dads buddy. all evenly worn and the worst one is just baaarely to the wear bar. going to mount them on a buddies extra set of steelies and put them on the frame. hope to run them for a while when the K20 is finished.

things will be slow on this build, setting aside all my garage made money for this project and as much of a paycheck as i can aside but only working part time it dont leave much.

The C10 i was told burned/leaked oil and needed to be check every other day...was looking under the hood and they didnt have the pcv valve hooked up so it was puking oil out the breather they had jerry rigged up! fixed that, no more oil problems and it runs even smoother than before. i think the C10 is going to get licensed while i work on the frame. will make for a good parts runner and DD. this things rides and drives like a caddy, to nice to just park until the body is needed.

Man i can not wait to see this come together! Are you planning on fixing up the bocy of the C10? Or just use as is?

ya im kinda undecided on it...it would be sooo nice to have a functional 4wd that i could give some body damage to :D. on the other hand it would be sweet to paint it up like the C30 but that would be for another summer project and cost even more money. im kinda leaning towards the CK5 fashion of a little :weld::grind::hack::chainsaw2: and using it! body damage is good for some bonfire stories and i think it adds some character to a vehicle. it dont have to look pretty to be functional. let the snowball roll...

Its not like that C10 is very "pretty" looking as is

I'm not much for crunching body parts but its your truck do what you want :thumb:

ya the C10 ain't perfect and the paint scheme got Grandpa style written all over it.

i dont mean purposely go sliding into trees, i just dont think ill be afraid to take the cut off wheel to the fenders and wont cringe to bad if i do scratch/dent it. :thumb:

All I have wanted from reading through this thread since I saw those SEXAY valve covers is a shot of that Engine bay with that new 355 wearing its valve covers.

Is this too much to ask?:haha:

these go out to scottishdave, was a nice day out and have had several rain storms since the last salting of the roads so i got the truck out of my grandmas garage and took it a mile down the road for some fresh gas. she fired right up! :waytogo:

edit: pay no attention to the messy plug wires...got some nice red GM performance wires to go on once i get the right wire holders. as you can see with that front header tube coming back the way it does, they have to be just right..

man this thing was way back on the third page :doah: well i went down to where the truck is and pulled the diesel governor out, something i never changed after the swap. took it up to a local place and the guy traded me straight up for a gas one that he changed the springs on to fit what i want. new gasket should be here in the AM. i hope it holds the shifts longer, test drive to come. still havent got it out for the summer yet, needs insurance.
