'86 Jimmy 4in Lift, 40’s, tons, 8.1 Swap- 700r4 said PNNNNN

This is not a dedicated trail rig, but does trailer to the destination usually. I am currently in the planning phase of doing a 52/56" spring swap, and getting back to being more road worthy.
So since exhaust was installed I’ve been fighting an injector code and misfire. I messed with the wiring for a long time and decided to take a spare set of injectors and have them tested and cleaned. Well, once I pulled my rail I found my issue.

Swapped on the new set and cleared the codes. It took about 30-40 seconds and the ECM worked out the injector issue.

It’s running great now and gets zero traction lol.

So I’ve got an issue that really isn’t that big of a deal on the trail, but really makes driving it on the road not safe. After I swapped the gearbox out for an orbital and made it full hydraulic steering, the steering is super sensitive and anything above 30mph is extremely sketchy. Anyone have insight to how I can slow the steering down a bit?

Someone suggested a larger diameter ram, but I’m not really looking to redo that part of the steering. I’d go back to hydro assist before I buy another ram.

You get used to it after awhile.

I did find another steering issue while on the maiden voyage over the weekend. The pump is not moving enough fluid to turn the tires while the hubs are locked, so I’ll be pulling the pump apart to do some mods for that. The solution was to leave one hub unlocked and then lock the other side once I was pointed at the obstacle. Well there was only one ledge that I ended up needing to do that.

Overall, the 8.1 performed flawlessly and exceeded my expectations. Torque and reliability for days. Throttle response was great and the current fuel cell and frame mounted pump held up just fine.

Other than steering, my biggest dislike for the first trip is the amount of rattles this truck has developed over the years of sitting. The side and rear glass all needs new seals. Doors need new seals. Lots to start picking at, but overall I’m very impressed with the outcome of the engine.

And here’s the one lone picture I took…
