'86 Jimmy 4in Lift, 40’s, tons, 8.1 Swap- 700r4 said PNNNNN

This is not a dedicated trail rig, but does trailer to the destination usually. I am currently in the planning phase of doing a 52/56" spring swap, and getting back to being more road worthy.
Hell yeah! Good old WI black stinky slop. I remember growing up in WI that was the only kinda wheeling we had. Find a marsh that was too wet to farm and that was where you could play around.

Yes, that is about all we have around here, MUD.

Sorry, not trying to hijack your thread, now back to our regular scheduled program.

Eh, if this was an active build at the time it might bother me. But there's no progress at the moment.
Except for the cleaning... mud is fun. Crawlin is fun too but sometimes its fun just to hit some muddy ruts and let the motor eat.
Yeah it's a stress reliever to get to a muddy patch and just stand on the throttle.

Yay! I worked on a vehicle today!

I finally got back out to work on this.

Pulled the intake and valve covers. Everything looks great inside. Nice and clean still.

So before I started tearing this down I had a lifter noise on the drivers side. I noticed that there was this “burnt” looking spot on the drivers side. How do I tell if a lifter is bad?

Knock that rust thing out and it's cool.

I noticed when I quit using tap water and only used bottled water to fill mine it stopped that behavior instantly. My antifreeze is 10yrs old I bet and it's still bright green.

I wondered that myself. I'm going to start using bottled water too then. Or just get super cheap 50/50 from my work.

As for the lifter, any ideas?

The lifters need to be removed and inspected for wear.

That chunk of crap is in the exhaust crossover port, some manifolds or gaskets will block that port.

So go ahead and pull rockers and push rods to inspect the lifters, that's not crazy hard.

As for the ports, I was more concerned about the milky green crap on the driver's rear port.

I always buy and carry 50/50 way easier than having to round up the right water and I usually catch it on sale when it's only like a buck or so more than the concentrate.

Need opinions. I degreased this twice and scrubbed it with a tile brush after power washing it. Do I keep cleaning or call this good for what it’s going on?

And the valve covers are getting a fresh coat of paint too.

It's probably stained that way. Paint it would make it look nice again. Id paint it black though.

I think that it is your call. That is definitely good enough to run, is that good with you? If you want it cleaner, you will either need to blast it, or use some other chemicals.
I know that paint won't stay forever with the heat cycles of an engine. I just blasted the Performer that I have which was painted orange.

Pressure washer /car wash

Wear a rain coat
I took it to the car wash, and no I didn’t wear a rain coat. I got soaked lol.

I think I’ll just run it as is. The block and VC’s will be black too, so I don’t want the intake black also. But I did think about orange.

I may try one more cleaner on it to see what it does. Maybe something more aggressive?

Use a scuff pad and some comet. You just need friction. I used a wire wheel on mine. Worked good but also left some gouges in the alumninum. But I didn’t feel like pulling it off just to clean it so it was just what I could accomplish in the engine bay.
