'86 Jimmy 4in Lift, 40’s, tons, 8.1 Swap- 700r4 said PNNNNN

This is not a dedicated trail rig, but does trailer to the destination usually. I am currently in the planning phase of doing a 52/56" spring swap, and getting back to being more road worthy.
I’m on my work computer so it’s not as easy to screen capture for a post on my phone but if you rockauto it you’ll see that the one you got is for the dummy light, and the one I posted above is for the gauge. They even say light or gauge in the description.

Greg, both the gauge and the light are factory applications, you just need to pick the right one for your truck. The parts house should have asked you which system your truck had.

Thanks dude. I would have been pissed when it came time to start it up.

I think you would have figured it out pretty quickly. The switch is normally open, and the sending unit is normally closed. So your gauge would have been running backwards, and it would only have two positions.

I think we could have figured that out.

Tonight was a decent night. Coolant sensor and oil pressure sensor are both done. Not loomed but at least connected. Once the key cycles on both gauges “twitch”. Since the truck doesn’t run yet, I can’t fully test them. But I did at least turn the truck over a few times for the first time since last October. Coolant and some fuel and it’s ready to fire and be timed.

Interesting. Mine point the 45* fitting straight up instead of pointing to the side like that.

Is that 'cause your dizzy is bigger than mine? Or because your sending unit is oversized?

I was surprised that my new one is quite a bit bulkier than my old one. Makes no sense.
I have just a normal HEI dist. Don't think its any larger. But there definitely wasn't the real-estate for it unless that 45* was on there.
 
Tried to start the Jimmy this morning after putting gas in it, but all it does is crank. Hooked up my test light to the spark plug wire and grounded it, but nothing happens while cranking. So I hooked up my laptop and the computer is putting signal to the distributor just fine. I checked for power at the plug, and I have power to the dizzywith key on. So my questions are, the red wire at the dizzy is ignition power and the green is Input, should the green wire have any power at all?

The other question, is this cap toast? Rotor looks fine though?

Isn't the green wire tach signal? I don't remember what you would find on that wire, maybe ground pulses??
If that cap was running, I see no reason that it shouldn't run again, unless there is a crack somewhere.
Won't ignition voltage kill a test light bulb? I always use a spark plug, and ground it. But you have to be able to see it, which can be a trick, unless you have a remote start button.

Yeah, the green wire is supposed to be tach signal. I didn't thing about checking for ground on that. And for $25, I'm going to see about a new cap. It's piece of mind knowing it's new. It's tough diag'ing stuff by myself, it totally kills the motivation.
 
I just remembered that I think I forgot to connect on of my ground straps. I'll be looking into that night.
 
Well after mounting one ground strap, replacing the cap and rotor, and putting it all back together, I had a small nudge in the form of a massive backfire that told me I’m 180* out on timing. My wife came out and checked on me, and even my neighbors came over to make sure I was ok. After my ears stopped ringing for 10min, I told them it was normal and that the truck would not be making that noise again :haha::doah::1zhelp::yikes::D
