'86 K5 Isuzu 4BD1-T swap

something i was wondering. did you use your stock wiring harness? since these came in some chevys and isuzus i would think the wiring would be easy to do

There's really no wiring harness for these, because you only need to wire the alternator! you also need a 12v switched power source for the glow plugs if you plan to run it in the winter. I ended up using the stock blazer harness and just cutting/ taping off and bundling all the extra wires. It'll look clean under the hood once I finish it.

more pics soon!

Now I want to do the same thing with my M1009. Ret. that old 6.2 and throw in a 3.9 4BD2-T in there or maybe a 4HK1 but the wiring would be a pain with the 4HK1... Rant over
Great Job so far and I'm interested in see how the wiring turns out too.

I will do a more modern Isuzu diesel swap eventually using an "H" series motor.

The in-direct injection 4BD series "2" heads are known for heat problems and will gak head gaskets and/ or crack heads from what I've been told. The head design was changed from a direct injection on the 4BD1-T to an in-direct injection on the 4BD2-T for emissions reasons. I'd stick with the 1-T for efficiency and reliability.

I drove my blazer for the first time yesterday with the new diesel engine! It was only a short test drive but I made 8 pounds of boost just playing in my driveway. Power feels good and it runs great.

I also finished wiring my gauges, added a pyrometer on the dash and finished my interior up front. I put the seat belts back in today. The buckets are captain's chairs from a '91 or so suburban, very comfy but I had to custom mount them to my old tracks. The small tires & wheels are just rollers until I put the 35's back on.

I should have the bugs worked out soon and it'll be my daily driver for the summer.

The Blazer is at a local shop now having the rear axles rebuilt and my Eaton posi installed. After that I need to bend up some tubing to connect my turbo outlet to my existing exhaust system and it's done!

Here are a few pictures of the Off Road Designs cross-member that I just installed. The oil pan interfered with the factory X-member so I had to remove it. The ORD piece had tabs to tie in the big block motor mounts but since I changed these I had to cut the tabs off. The piece is high quality and very strong. I'd recommend it for many different engine swaps into older chevys.

Thanks for the info on the motors, I really want to do a 1hk because it will be a P.I.T.A... but it will be worth it for "smiles" and giggles... :D The 4BD1-T looks like a great choice too I'm just waiting for the right price on one. (aka... when I have any money)
But your truck is amazing! I will be using all this for reference when i do my swap... Thanks for posting up all this info! Keep up the work...

It works!

The blazer has been on the road for about a week now. It runs great! I tweaked the max fuel screw on the injector pump to give me more power and boost, it will puch 18 pounds of boost now and it pulls hard. My intake is a temporary one made of PVC but it works fine. I'll post upsome pics asap.

here's a pic from the weekend; I hauled the jaguar around with no trouble at all. The little isuzu engine has to work a little on the hills, but I can keep my speed just fine and still get great mileage. I'll give a mileage report once my new speedometer cable comes in!

i know this is old but lookin for some updates? what kind of mpg you gettin?

Its been a while, and Im still following the thread... Any updates on MPG, performance, power, reliability??

Andrew

I averaged anout 25 mpg with the 35" MT's. POwer was great and it was 100% reliable. I sold the truck to a friend last fall.

I just finished a similar swap in my '82 chevy dually. Another very clean install with a BIG turbo and intercooler setup in front of a NV-4500 5spd. Check it out here: http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/showthread.php?16350-4BD1T-in-a-1982-Chevy-Dually
