86 K5,

Starting with a little background on me and the truck, I won't be offended if you skip this part!

Now my first car, in 1998, was a 1970 Dodge adventurer 2wd. Awesome truck but not for me so it was traded for a 62 bug that had some sort of alcohol heat system that, at 17-18 years old, I had no clue how to get it to work. At 34 I still don't!. Anyway, that was sold when winter came and I got a GMC Jimmy 89. I had that truck for a few years but after basic training and AIT I was driving it from NJ to where I was stationed in OK and blew the transmission on the way. Drove the last 100 miles or so in second gear. It got parked until I sold it. Army doesn't pay much and I was deploying so there was no time to get it going. I had a couple 80's square bodies between then and now but always wanted another K5. So after a divorce, a kid (that I maintained custody of because she was nuts) bankruptcy, going back to college and a big career change, another kid with my current fiancé, and some side jobs to save up for the truck, I took a drive to Delaware and picked up this truck for 2000. I wish I was on here first and read the post about what to look for! Anyway here is the truck the way I bought it. Had to try out the 4 wheel drive.

...And the first time getting it temporarily lodged in place. My buddy back there on his phone said "just floor it" so I did, not realizing I wasn't in 4x4.

Well my goal is a capable family rig. so 31" tires and stock everything wasn't gonna cut it. After some advice from here I got a 4" lift from ORD and put it on. These are the only pics I have but it was just a wonderful experience!

Now that that was done, I needed to ensure I that the next time I was temporarily lodged that I wouldn't need to walk a mile to find someone to yank me out. So, after a couple uneventful trips to the pine barrens I bought a welder (Hobart 240 for 100 bucks like new the guy was loaded and had no clue what to do with it) and had my first run at welding with flux core (ill get a bottle of gas before I do any more welding on here...maybe)

Still not done with that. In time. Used it a half a dozen times, seems my welds are holding!

That's how it sits...

I have a locker recommendation for the SF, but it's not cheap

ARB
Everything you want from an open and everything you want when locked. Not cheap, but I will never run anything else in the rear

Haven't been able to read everything but so far I like it! Your life story is similar to mine... We'll talk sometime... Lol

Just to avoid the compressor and what seems like a more complicated install, I was thinking about the electric locker. How comparable are they to the air lockers?

You did a really nice job on that front bumper!

Thanks

i agree! nice job with the truck.

Thanks

That could be good or bad. Hope you had more of the positive experiences!

A cheaper option would be a full float axle with a G80 in it. You should be able to locate one fairly easily with 4.10's so you'll be way ahead from a $ perspective.

There no advantage in installation terms one to the other.
The compressor really isn't that ugly, and you won't see it anyway
:haha:

From what I understand, the E lockers are much more reliable than at first. ARBs have proven their worth as has their customer service the few times I've needed it

14 bolt SF came with an E locker in H2s factory.

The best idea selectable for sure.

Might want to investigate an LS swap for a motor. It nets alot of good stuff for a daily driver and a wheeler. You can buy motor mount plates full wiring stuff to make a swap not that much more difficult than a normal motor swap.

Wiring I think painless is over priced I might look around and see if you could find another cleaner factory harnesd

Unfortunately the bad but it all worked out for the good!

Same here. Always stayed positive and drive on.

I've been tempted a couple of times to buy a complete set from hillbilly wizard. Dana 60 front and 14 bff with a detroit locker in the rear both with 4.56 gears for a little over $2000. I don't know anything about the company though. Just to build my existing front and possible junkyard rear I'm coming to around 1500.

That is what I am planning to get as of now. I wouldn't know where to begin with an LS swap or the cost to get one with all the accessories, where to look for one...but I'll see if I can do any useful research.

Our axles tend to be overpriced here but for 2-$350 I can score a 10.5" G80 axle with 4.10's. I just don't see the point of investing in an expensive locker and regearing a SF axle.

The semifloat is a great axle. For someone not carrying heavy loads towing often or running 38s on down. More clearance than a 10.5 parts are similar in pricing and it remains 6 lug.

I used to be a 60/14bolt every time everywhere but if the front stays unlocked and its just a rear locker that SF won't ever even whimper

I agree. But I am learning my options as I go. If I can save money for other areas and still get an equal or better outcome, I'm in. These junk yards around here are a pain in the ass. Sometimes I think I know more then they do and that isn't much.

I was looking at the elocker because I have heard bad things about some lockers in the snow. I probably drive my truck more in the winter then in the summer so I liked the option of being able to not have it engage on the road. So, right or wrong, what ever I end up with will probably get some sort of selectable locker in it. I may be putting to much faith in what I have heard but my kids are usually in the truck with me whenever it is out of the driveway so I would rather be safe then sorry. Piecing that all together in my head (out of school for 16 years and I still think "to get her" when spelling together) I think I will try to find a suitably geared 14bff as cheap as I can and get the elocker. What is a fair price to try and find a 60 for? Also, are there any versions of the 14bff to stay away from?

But if his plan is to have a 60 up front, then your stuck with a 6 lug rear that you put a wack of cash into with a locker and a regear. No doubt that axle can be a great fit for some applications.......

Originally I mentioned putting in the 6 lug sf in the back and regearing the front stock one to match.

When I do go with a 60 up front I'll put a 14bff in too.
