If that doesn't convince you to get a center mounted tank, then nothing will.

Don't believe the hype that some people have been pushing for years to get GM to pay money.
EVERY big rig in the world has saddle tanks, most cars have rear tanks that you can see so a rear end crash would hit that too.
in an accident smashing into a gas tank will not make it explode unless there was explosives in the car to ignite it on impact which actually have been done by some companies to say they are dangerous, they were caught doing so.
Even if a tank is inside the frame a big accident will damage the fuel tank and it will leak and possibly burn too.
I will never be affraid of the saddle tank, most of my vehicles have them wether it's my pickups or my big rig.

thanks! :waytogo:

I agree that side saddle tanks can be safe, but diesel in big rigs is much more difficult to ignite than gasoline. That is not a suitable comparison.

In the article you'll find statistics that show the GM design was more dangerous than usual:

Then things came to a head. Armed with findings of the NHTSA investigation, Transportation Secretary Federico Peña declared the fuel system defective in October 1994. Among other things, investigators found the risk of burning to death in side-impact crashes was 3.4 to six times higher in the GM trucks than comparable Fords and Dodges.
So if keelue is thinking about getting a different gas tank, it sure can't hurt.

I was replying to you not Keelue, he might need the clearance for off road, and that is a legitimate reason to relocate tanks, but you are only adding to the hype that some people have been trying to create for years.
The numbers that you see in this report are misleading because there were people determined to make it an issue and were staging these accidents and recording them on video and skewing the numbers.
I have been in accidents, and also witnessed quite a few that involved these trucks and I am telling you, they do not explode on impact, the one you see that do, were staged.
Now the newer fuel injected trucks with a pump in tank, might possibly if the damage gets to the pump and somehow it ignites, but still a stretch.

Hmm here you go:

Maybe we should ask the OP if we should keep going on with the debate on saddle tanks in his thread?

ha! yeah i was wondering how long this would go for, it's all good to me though i like the reading material. there's a ton of info on google about the saddle tanks "defect", deaths, nbc rigging up the crash test, etc, etc. originally i was really just concerned with clearance, or if it was even worth attempting some sort of skid plate/slider for em. i do like the 40 gallon capacity. honestly though i probably won't do anything regarding the tanks for a few months

next up is the front suspension and crossover steering, i got everything but the springs ready and sitting in my living room, depending on work was gonna get started on that this weekend :D

Ya I think that is a good Idea to sell the fenders if they are in good shape don't cut them up people here on the east coast would love to have them. Like me. trade for some with dents or a little rust that can be cut out or some thing.I would even look into shipping to ME. then like the other guy said you would feel so bad about cutting up great fenders. I could use some on a DD truck I am Building. You could make some sort of deal with some one.

gotta give a shout out to captian obvious (thatk30guy) for the 205 shifter knob, thanks!
