87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

parts002.jpg

Can you explain too me what stage all these parts are in? is this pre paint? i love how clean everything looks. im assumng the only way to achive this is through the use of special equipment or can it be done by any one with a local parts store? and whats imron?

btw awesome thread ive been workin my way through it sorry about the hijack

The parts you see there have been sandblasted. At the time of the picture, and Ryoken will correct me if I'm wrong, they had just been blasted, but not coated with zinc or primer yet.

The only real way to acheive it is to use a blasting cabinet, or to use a few pieces of sandpaper and some elbow grease.

Ryoken, it is looking good. Glad to see you are getting some time to get back to it. But, since I don't want to go back and find it, who are the diff covers from, and what did they set you back?

yup, Kerts Razorbacks... about 150, 160 a piece.. pricey... but freakin badarse, knew i had to have em as soon as I saw em...

and Howlong..... yup, bare steel, just out of the glassbead cabinet.. I have one at work, but most any local machine shop will have one... They usually do it for a price... like an intake manifold might cost ya $10 or something..

Imron is an automotive/fleet urethane paint.. very tough... self-etching zinc chromate primer on the bare steel, then epoxy primer, than Imron... pretty bulletproof coating system...

Great, thanks for the info. I am thinking I may need something like that with the new 14BFF going in the back. Something about it being about the size of a boat anchor.

So what brand is imron or is that the brand and is it a spray paint and where do you purchase it?

Imron is a brand name from Dupont. It is not available, IIRC, as a spray type paint in an aerosol can. It must be sprayed with a gun. I believe you would probably need to use a paint supplier, most likely an auto paint supplier would be able to provide Imron.

I believe that Ryoken uses a single stage Imron, but I am sure he will correct me if I am wrong.

thanks for the speedy answer, im gettin ready to paint up some stuff on my truck and was curious about the imron. sounds like pretty serious stuff, for now i think ill stick too the krylon hammered!

correct... :D the main copper of the truck is basecoat/clearcoat... chromabase base, with Imron clear on top... all my black, etc is a single stage Imron.......

howlong, it is a catalyzed paint.. meaning you add a hardener to it.. think bodyshop... spray guns, compressor, etc... rattle cans are an uncatalyzed paint, in almost all circumstances, except the rare rattlecan epoxy primer...

A catalyzed coating will always be far superior to a rattlecan... Now whether everyone needs/wants to go that far is debatable.. I'm setup for it and have been restoing vehicles for 25 yrs, I'd almost feel guilty using rattlecan.. Especially considering I'm trying to go with the "do it right, do it once" train of thought... For the average job, sure, I use rattlecans for parts too...

That totally makes sense i like the do it right the first time mentality, now i just need to get a hold of some spray guns and a bead blaster! but seriously im lookin forward to keepin this truck for many many years in time i hope my garage can accommodate specialty tools like many of those on CK5!

edit: thanks for the very detailed answers the more i read up on this and hear about it the easier it gets!

ask any questions you may have, always glad to help... I often get accused of going overboard, but I'd rather be accused of that, then of doing shoddy work...

more pics coming tomorrow guys...

ok, hope noones on dial up... :wink1:

some of the recent progress.... the rest of the frame in all it's naked rawness... :haha:

beginning the sliders... tape cutline on the rocker.. I left a 1" tab lower on the qrter, so it can be bent under for a flange to the slider...

slider004.jpg

the final length of the slider...

slider006.jpg

the line for the sectioning of the wheelwell..

slider007.jpg

one of the pieces removed..

sectioning001.jpg

welded up, moved the opening about 4" forward... by sectioning it, I'm able to keep the 1/2" raised lip bodyline around the qrter...

sectioning004.jpg

the slider will have a matching angle cut...

sectioning005.jpg

it also gives me the inner lip flange... still need to do a little patchwork at the bottom before I final mount the sliders...

I'll finish that up once I fit the custom cab supports in... you can see some rough sketching of future fitment...

sectioning007.jpg

the x-member will be the same 2 x 4 as the sliders, with a 1 1/2" x 3" spacer pad at the end to mount the slider to..

kinda hard to explain, more pics coming... :wink1:

Good work as always dude, but do you ever get time to do any work? Like proper money earning work!! lol. Good stuff.

Hey Mark, awesome to see ya around....

thanks, I'm on vacay this week... hadn't done much on the rig in months due to an excess of that horrible 4 letter word..

It's an ambitious project.. I think the floor/tunnel gig is gonna be pretty sick... eventually it should all work out sweet once I tie a cage into the frame... thats down the road tho...

That's a big undertaking for sure, good luck with it. Some vacation lol!! Good luck bro.
