87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

Great idea to do your own wiring, then you only have what you want and need.

For the multi cable grommets, you can use plain clear silicone (not RTV) to help seal the small gaps between wires. This is great to seal connector ends too. It doesn't set up like RTV. Its what the Navy uses...

Why are you using the solenoid on the starter along with the remote solenoid? Is there a reason you don't just set up that solenoid in the box as a remote mounted solenoid? It just seems to me that you are just introducing an extra failure point with two solenoids in series like that.

Thanks, yeah, thats the thought.. no frills, just whats needed in the simplest, most accessable, bullet-proof way... no more fuses , fusable links, fru-fu, etc..

thats how we seal lots of wire/dash stuff at the marina, silicone.. Before i put the wire sheath on I'm gonna do that, thanks... :D

This is the standard remote solenoid mod (well, simplest)... you need to maintain the solenoid on the starter to engage the bendix.. The extra fail point is worth it to run a 1 wire starter...

no juice thru that whole wire to the starter anymore (better cable life), no permanent juice down at the starter lug (less corrosion and better solenoid operation), rest of the power doesn't need to be run off the starter lug anymore, no hot start conditions, etc...

You should see some of the diesel applications in the boats, I've seen 4 solenoids in series... :eek1:  :haha:

So far, everything has been, lets just say, robust... :D Can't wait to throw that huge honking alternator in, be awhile on that tho.. :doah:

Now that I'm gonna go with that, I can final shape it and polish...

The 1/4 turn latches have become a bit of an adventure to acquire, but I'm patient...

Ah, as you can gleen thru the lexan, it's a mess in there right now... Gonna get worse too, before better... Such is the life of a DD...

Everythings new, good quality, it's just I have to keep revising it as I build it... The final, loomed harness is aways off..

Got a bunch of stuff flying today, maybe a pic update tonight...

Thanks for the props gang, really appreciate it... :D

Paul, what did you use for sealing the lid?

Haven't gotten to that... Can't really mount the lid without the fancy latches...

I hate when ya find a killer product, then they want nothing to do with you unless your buying 500.... Carling switches is like that..

So I'm on the hunt for em at boatbuilders, etc, waiting on some e-mail responses... I'll run around with it open till then...

Ok, here's how that side of the compartment is coming together.. Only thing left on that side will be a welding rig, winch lines and box mods...

Here is how the inside will be for a few weeks, operational, but not pretty...

The relays are low beam, hi-beam, volt #1 and volt #2... I need to add 2 more for electric fans..

The dual buss bar will have one side right to the battery switch common lug and the other side is hot in the run position..

That is a sweet set up. I wam wanting to do something similar to mine, just not as intense as yours.

Thanks guys... :o

I'm happy with it so far... I'm thinking the custom fan shroud & glovebox breakerpanel should turn out pretty cool...

Now I just gotta do a york and tank on the other side at some point... :wink1:

Hey. anybody have a recommendation for a color combo on the latches now that you've seen the lexan?

I'm kinda leaning toward the black cup with satin handle..

but I guess black/black or the mirrored one would be fine...

Hmmm not pretty....I guess you haven't seen the spaghetti under my dash:haha: :haha: Looking great Paul

I personally like the black and silver, kind of adds a bit of contrast.:D

I also have a spagetti factory under my dash.:o

You have raised the bar even higher.

IMO Black on black would keep it sleek, but the black cup with satin handle would pop a little. Depends on what your going for. It's going to look sweet either way.

If you look at the 3rd pic, you'll notice the sides hang out the back with a flange at the bottom.. There is a removable panel that goes there... To prevent any sasquache friends with big boots from hurting anything... It also gives me a spot on top to mount my 2 buss bars that will feed the breakers coming out of the back...
