87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

harsh.....

I think it'll take a shot pretty well.. if it gets smashed, I'll just redo it... easy enough, wasn't a long project... I am considering a bronze bushing in the skid, but that'd be an add-in down the road...

and the truck will certainly be wheeled.... most of what it'll see on a normal basis is mud....

build collapsible part in it like the old VW steering columns so when it does hit something it breaks where you want it too not the end of the winch or something.

I was gonna make it sleeved and pinned, behind the plate originally... cuz I was gonna use the end of the stock one with the ball, and that wouldn't fit thru the hole when I need to pull the skid for filter maintenence (oil, ps and trans).. so I was gonna have the outer section removable..

if it gets smashed, I'll probably make the new one like that... actually what would be the ticket would be to have a spinable drive of somesort in the skid that you could insert a handle..

either way, it's done for now.. if it becomes an issue, I'll deal with it.. for now it was the simplest solution so I can get off the bumper and into the cab/cage...

I love watching the stuff you come up with!! I can't wait to see what's next. Though it does make me see how lacking I am with my attention to detail on my own project.:(

Keep it up. It should be quite the reliable vehicle when you're done!

Wow! lots of progress! I love the winch control idea, however I have an idea...

Use a sliding tube with notch and pin- its not like it needs that much force, but it will be a safety thing. Not that you couldnt re-do it if damaged, its just you dont want to damage the inners of the winch either. Add a small spring, and you can pull it out adjust, and it will spring back in.

step 2:

I'd add 2" 1/4" tube, cut it so its at an angle to the angle of your integrated skid plate. Cut notches at the exposed end, for both the clutch engage and release positions. Now, you can pull it out, click it into position, and it wont release on you, even if you jab into a rock. Its also very well protected against rocks and mud, now that there is a support tube that wont actually wack into the control mechanism.

Just a thought. :)

i'm kinda liking an idea like this... it's gonna sit on the backburner for now... i'll revisit it down the road when I have some time... for now, it functions..

the cab is gonna be soooo much work, I need to get going on it...

thanks for the encouragement guys... :D

Ryoken can you pop in my wiring thread and toss some advice my way if you have any, your wiring work seems nice.

purdy please:D

actually, now that I've thought about it.... I may do something all together different with the lever, location-wise... really, this was me being lazy... :( it was the simplest solution... I have a TON of hrs in the bumper, and may have taken the easy way out on this one... I think it's pretty trick coming out of the skid, and pretty convenient, but yes, vulnerable..

for now, I'm gonna leave it till the rad support, filters and grill go in... I have another idea, but I have to see how that all fits together...

parts-wise, I'm working on getting the remote filters, coolers and plumbing ironed out... so I can getting the front config down and build the grill..

labor-wise, I'm gonna bang hard on getting the cab/cage plan finalized next weekend and get the first tubes fit up...

anyone got a clean pair of fenders near Joysey? Vinnie?

some unexpected shop toys for Ryoken....... :woot::grind::hack:

bought this today for $50.... stoked.... :saweet:

tomorrow I lug home the metal lathe I bought for $75...... :wink1:

looks to be a mid 60's Craftsman or so, maybe 70's.... seemed tight... needs a little cleaning....

wow, that sanders worth like $300... cool.... :saweet:

one of my mechanics dad just wanted them out of his shed... :wink1:

thats one I don't have... have a press and drill press already... he had a nice old craftsmen table saw for cheap too that I didn't do.. I knew he was bringing a lathe over, but I didn't know about the sander... just ordered a bunch of new 60 grit belts and discs for it....

I REALLY want to buy the horizontal bandsaw from Horrible Freight for like $200...

the one i got needs some work and it is for wood but i am going to look into the specs on it.

I've got one for wood as well. Can they be swapped out for a metal blade?

Thats what I was wondering as well. I dont see why not. But I havent looked into it. I will post up in the tool thread when I find out the make and model.

even with all the new power toys in the last year, it still takes a long time sometimes to do what appear to be the simplest of tasks...

I'm thinking the end of that belt sander will be helpful fine-tuning tube....

hopefully I can get the A & B post tubework bent this weekend.. it's either that, or prime and trim out everything from the firewall forward... want to get the x-member, mounts, box, bumper and springs permanently mounted.. so where they just need an overcoat of flattened black...

I have seen plenty of deals on stuff I could use, but I just don't have the room for it yet. Heck, I am still trying to figure out where I am putting the tub I am picking up. I want it close the house so I can quickly swap the panels, but I am very limited on space at my place. My sisters boyfriend said I could store it there, but that is a 15 mile drive each way, which means I would be very limited on my time. So many projects, so little space and time.

convenience is important on a project... I used to rent a shop about 10 miles from home... used to roll-in at midnight, sucked... :(

I'm spoiled now.. basically my house is a 2 bedroom apartment above a 2 car garage.. I have a couple spots outside too... but I usually need to cover anything out there, town is kinda anal about that...

screw parking the DD in the other bay, it can sit out.. having the bay to work in is more important... :grind::hack::weld:

when I moved around alot, I was anti-packrat due to that.. was offered a lathe yrs ago, and turned it down... :doah:

speaking of.....

lathe001.jpg

the tailstock, motor, bits, etc are still at work... gonna need to start shopping chucks, etc...

I'll have to research year, etc.....

lathe003.jpg

lathe002.jpg

lots to clean... gonna slowly go thru it... recon, glassbead, paint parts as it warrants... the motor works too.. also all the gears, bed, carriage appear to be in good shape...

I dont have any pressing use for it... so I'll go thru it during "quite" hrs, etc as I get time... build a nice stand with compartments and wheels for it too...
