87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

Nice work! Maybe you would consider it cutting corners, but something like this

would make the layout of your fasteners a little easier.

boy, that's ironic.... I just came up from doing the mounting holes for the overhead... definitely the most difficult to do, due to those panel mounts are fixed, up near the roof.... measure 7 times, drill once... :haha:

I had considered the wheelwell clips... as a bodyguy I've actually got a couple boxes of them in the shop..... the main reason I didn't use them was due to the thickness of the panel mount tabs they'd slide over...

damn good thinking tho, thanks!

I have 4 out of 6 perfect so far, countersunk with the stainless ones in there... gonna look sick... :saweet:

all the other panels will be MUCH easier, as I can pre-make the panels, drill/countersink the holes, mount the panel, THEN tack the nuts...

been chopping and fitting composite all morn... back to the grind! :grind::saweet:

while I'm waiting for some dust to clear downstairs, I'll post some of what I've been doing today...

still need to box in the back end of it... that'll be super easy tho...

hopefully some pretty cool console shots later.... :D

sh*ts bucks these days.... went up substantially in the last year..

it's fiberglass board made under 50,000 lbs of pressure, machine extruded... not just a homo depot kinda thing... :wink1:

here's the manufacturer i use..... check the contact info for a dealer near you...

http://www.creativepultrusions.com/

damn glad I dont have to buy anymore for a long time... those sheets ran me $200 a piece... :eek1: $600 bucks right there... :( and I get a better deal than Joe Shmoe off the street... last year, they would have cost me 140, 150 a piece..

but I should be able to do EVERY fiberglass project on the truck, and still have a 1/2 sheet or so leftover... all the panels will be 3/16th's, but some areas will be doubled up, etc...

afaik, I'm the first to ever use it in a truck.... :haha: sh*t's bulletproof...

alrighty... just a few rambling build thoughts for a sunday evening....

for as much as I wanted to, and originally cut it to, I had to shorten up the overhead console.. originally I cut it back at the b-hoop.. and tho it looked good from inside the cab, etc, the need to put a top coverplate, rainguard, whatever, on the top in the back was not worth the risk.... should look good once boxed, painted, softtop on, etc, I'm also thinking of adding a cargo light at the very back there...

gonna work on fitting up that passenger-side console piece during the week... still need to make a flange down the sheetmetal on the lower dash edge on both sides to stiffen up those lower corners...

definitely pleased with the countersink look....

thank ya Ben.... :D

nice working with the glass for a change... itchy, but it sure cuts/grinds easier than steel! :haha:

i'm psyched to get the tabs in for, and the side console panel in the p-side... then it should really take shape for you guys..

should see LOTS of progress over the next month or 2, with the tube order coming at the end of the week..

oh, here's one for ya.... :haha:

This shows how far ahead of myself I get... :o thinking down the road stuff...

I've already been working on the "revised, custom wiring harness" diagram for when she comes out this time....... taking into account EVERYTHING that the truck will, EVENTUALLY have... rear winch, the PC, all lighting, switching, etc... if I'm snaking wire thru my cage, I wanna run ALL the wires I could/will potentially need at once, in a chafe protector..

as of right now, it looks like I'm going to be running 22 of the Carling switches all told... :eek1: 10 in the dash, 5 per side. 12 in the overhead, 2 rows of 6....:doah::haha:

that's a chit load of Carlings for sure :eek1:

CRAZ AMOUN OF WORK FOR A WEEKEND.LOOKIN GOOD FO SHO BRO.ARE YOU GOING TOHAVE THE PUTER HOOKED TO A HEAD UNIT,OR IS THE PUTER GOING TO RUN ITS OWN OUTPUT RADIO FUNCTIONS THRU NET OR SOMETHING TO THAT EFFECT.sorry bout the large type im not yelling.damn capslock button.

:haha::haha::haha:

my intention at this point is no head unit.. not even sure if I'm gonna run a tuner card for radio in the PC..... I may just run MP3's only.....

yu will have to wait for the computer to run startup procedures before you could listen to the radio or mp3.i guess that will be enough time for the truck to warm up as well.still goin with 8 inch screen.should be pretty kick arse as is.i would like to have a head unit as well.i like being able to jump in and be able to have the radio goin or pop in a cd.i guess thats just what im used to.haha.i couldnt imagine having what you got goin on in your rig.mines old and ugly though.hahahaving that kind of stuff in mine would be like having a home theatre system in a old one bedroom shack.just wouldnt be right.what are you going to do to upload mp3.have a hookup up top for external hard drive so you can upload from that,or just hook up a ipod to download stuff from home computer.there is so many posibilitys with what you are doing.freakin cool.

it'll definitely have a few USB ports... For as much looking around as I've done at the hardware, I haven't researched what's possible with the mini-itx format in depth, forum reading, etc on hardware, software possibilities, etc.. I'd like to go off, and be pretty state of the art when the time comes.....

I'd like it have both a slimline cd rom and flash reader.. see, the thing is, that compartment is gonna have a fair amount of room... those PC's are small.... I can mount things external in there too, if I can... extra harddrive, whatever... I'd actually like a bigger case than the Voom's or the one I wanna run, the M300...

m300-lcd-enclosure.jpg

be a little while before i buy any of that stuff.... I'll end up calling one of these builder/companies and see what they recommend....

the other thing i may end up running in that enclosure is the MegaSquirt board and associated stuff......

wait so how long would it take for the computer to start up and play music? That would drive me crazy. Also how long will a hardrive take bouncing around offroad?

you can get boot times down pretty quick from what I've read on those systems... if I have to wait a minute for tunes to fire up, I'm not concerned...

you either run a laptop harddrive or ya can go solid state and not have to worry about it....... from what I understand, SS is impervious to the bouncing, etc, just a little slow retrieving data sometimes..
