87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

haha, too funny.... i never realized those where non-enclosed subs...

I see them EVERY day at work... i have MANY boats with those in em...

i'm not opposed to doing an enclosure... i think that triangle area in front of the well, in my initial concept would work well for an enclosure.. i actually have extra panel mount tabs to put on the cage there, to mount it...

but if something like that fits/works better in the end, it's definitely something i'd consider, thanks...

at this point tho, i am kinda scrambling for space... the main reason i designed it the way i did was to try and maintain a couple areas to do things like that on the sides......

oh, I think you know me well enough to know that I'm gonna do what i want in the end.... :wink1:

if i wasn't like that, I wouldn't have built 1/2 the stuff in my truck... people look at my glovebox, and think I'm nuts... whatever... :haha:

but i respect you guys opinions and ideas and appreciate the sounding board...

oh, abstract build note...

I realized today that I should be keeping my eye out for a good deal on some trail tires... I have a set of steelies that I could beadlock at some point and run something nasty on... for the more local wheeling...

maybe some 39.5 boggers out back, and TSL's up front... have to keep that one in mind when sectioning the wells... :doah::wink1:

I get most of my cage inspiration from a truly overkill cage, RDN's...

props to that psycho amount of work...

That is what I want. Whose is this?

I want to see more pics.

Your build is SICK! Thanks for sharing!

Awesome, that is what I want to Build for my Suburban in my sig.

I am digging the console and the floor work.

That is basically where I am at. Metal work.

I bought a bender just like yours, but money is tight, so I don't know.....

well, if ya can splurge for a tube order, that'll give ya plenty of labor to keep ya busy for awhile... till ya get more money! :doah::haha:

thats my take on it..

I've been very pleased with the pro tools 105... I've put it thru some chit the last 6 months... :haha:

yup... trial, and hopefully no errors, on the way... :haha:

i've learned some basic guidelines for bending, at least in my little dungeon... MOST pieces I start from the middle and work my way out.. leaving long, then chopping to length and notching... not 100% of the time tho, I have done a few that I measured and started from one end...

always air on the side of not bending enough.. for as annoying as it is to reload a tube for more bend, it's 100x more annoying to overbend and ruin a piece...

the bending is easy, it's the notching and fitting that are a pain...

at some point i'll go fancy and run software, hydro, etc, but for now, it's been real redneck... :o

are you putting a back seat back in it?if not the front portion of the cage looks well strong enough to save you and your occupants to not worry as much about the rear portion.that should hold well enough to not crush as is.then you still have your sub space:wink1:and the final look you are goin for.i you were going all baja and jumping dunes at 60 mph, then you might worry a lot more about perfect triangulation.around here that aint gonna happen.haha.

nope, no backseat... thats why I'm really not concerned.. the back cage was always an afterthought to the front....

alrighty....
rear021b.jpg

right now I'm leaning toward the original plan of attack...

Paul,

I'd say your DONE just as you've drawn it here. The diagonal bar strengthens the node correctly and supports the midspan of those long rear bar sections.

The only area that is still "at risk" is the extreme rear of the cage. I don't recall what your plans are back there but on each side you have unsupported bars coming up from the c-pillar area straight up to the bedrail, but nothing that supports them from lateral (side) forces.

I'd hate to triangulate it into the rear tailgate opening for useability reasons...but that's kind of where the bars need to go to strenthen the c-pillar posts. Maybe with a slightly steep traingulated tube you'd only need to encroach about 12" into the tailgate on either side???

Cagework is weird.... when most people start triangulating things, it gets very hard to stop. Just because you can draw a diagonal line between two points on the cage, doesn't mean you should put a tube there!! :D

:usaflag:

good stuff guys, thanks...

Greg as usual, you bring up some excellent points..... I've been waiting for someone to ask about the lateral in the back... I had sworn to myself I wasn't going to, for that usability factor.. but a steep one may work..

I hadn't even contemplated a removable bar.. not sure I like that, it would have to be VERY easy to remove... hmmm, where did I see those fancy-ass detachable tube thingys???? they where pricey from what I remember....

think I have an idea, gonna work on a drawing when I get home....
