funny you say that.... that was one of the things bouncing around my brain yesterday when I was constempating this whole Linux thing...

whether I'd start running into the issue of some software not being usable in Linux.. it's not detering me, just a concern I thought of...
 
It's available, I had done a bit of research earlier this year into setting it up. I just couldn't seem to find a software I liked. I am sure there is some out there, I just didn't have the time to really put into finding it. I know that the TomTom GPS stuff is entirely Linux based, so there has to be other stuff available that will do what I want.

My own research on the subject didn't turn up anything nearly as good as Microsoft Streets and Trips, as far as Linux-based solutions go.

You'd think there'd be a good Google-based solution, given the fact that Google Maps Mobile works well on my Windows Mobile-based handheld computer for work, and the fact that Google is so closely associated with Linux and open source software in general.

Last time I checked, turn-by-turn GPS solutions on Linux, especially with a "voice" telling you when/where to turn was a no-go. Until it's a common thing, I'd honestly recommend a stand-alone unit. Not a lot of money, and a LOT less hassle, although that's hypocritical of me to say, given my love of all things Linux. :D

I was, and am seriously curious about the whole Tom Tom/Linux thing. If their own additions to the code are open source, then technically a decent programmer would be able to port their entire code (maps, interface and all) over to ANY platform. To my knowledge, this hasn't happened yet though...
 
all I want is mapping and an arrow pointing to me. :wink1:

I'd feel creepy having my truck give me directions... :haha:
 
there's some sick irony in there.... :haha:

I really don't want something hightech and big for the program, as small an app as possible..

how about other software areas? like music?
 
Music is no issue with Linux, and there are software programs I looked at that would easily meet the needs you are looking for in this setup. Music, and even video should not be an issue. Done properly you could have a wireless network setup that allows you to transfer music while sitting in your house.

Thought you might like the irony. :grin:
 
speaking of irony......

I found it quite amusing that myself, a marine mechanic, show up this morn to buy a front clip out in east bumf*ck farm country, and it came off a Coast Guard truck... too funny... :haha:

chalk up a clean pair of fenders and rad support to the build.... :D

thanks... my first CL transaction... :D I've never even looked on it, last week i was bored and took a peak, glad I did.....

I was happy to dole out 150 smackers for it.... the wells where toast..... and i'll end up cutting the hood up for the sheetmetal...

started stripping them this morn... they've got an extra paintjob on em, but no mud from what I see so far... or rust.... pretty perfect.. :D

the rad support is a bit rougher... some pitty rust over where the wells bolt up, blasting'll take care of it... it's good where the mounts are, which seems to be the first place they usually go...
 
my 72 is rotted out where the wells bolt to the inners.im pretty sure its cause the dirt and salt collects there after its slung off the tires.my passenger one is almost gone cause thats where the battery sits.am currently thinking about getting the replacement plastic ones.will solve that problem for the rest of the trucks life i believe.
 
here's how the floor is coming together..... still need to round the edges, take a little off the cover size, do the welded nuts/fastener for the cover, etc, etc......

but the last piece has been cut at least...
