87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

thanks guys... :D

How much longer?

a lifetime? :doah::wink1: yeah, I'm shooting for may/june back on the road... I've been pushing pretty hard on it lately...

I think its amazing how when you look back to the beginning of this thread, that your K5 was just like the rest of our stuff at one point in time.:waytogo:

here she was as a virgin....

I'll do a small update here for some fri night fun.....

the fenders are pretty raw at this point.. hopefully tomorrow or sunday I'll get em out back and sandblast the nooks and crannies.... 1 tiny dent, no rust.... mucho pleased... I'll put em in zinc till I can start the sectioning/mounting in a couple weeks...

worked the floor a bit today.... got the allen bolts for the cover in with the nuts welded to the underside...

got a little more metal shaping to do still.... the cover will come back out as the floor is brought thru primer, then Imron... then I'll use some 1" wide thin weatherstrip tape on the edge of the floor, then bolt the painted cover back down... then i'll do the floor in Herc...

next couple days I'll be cutting side console panels and getting them mounted up.. hopefully the PC box too... so I can get all the panel mounts welded on the cage...

other than the harness tabs, that should take care of all the metalwork in the cab... oh, and I still need to fab up the heater bracket.. I'll probably do that when I'm doing the console sides....

Truck is looking amazing  , I love the access panels and the entire floor design in general. I am actually stealing quite a few of your idea's in planning out the floor in the 54 Willy's wagon I'm doing for my dad.
I just read that you are planning on Herc on the floors, I would recommend something else. I used it in a 76 K5 I used to own and my brothers CJ7 and wasn't impressed at all. It did holdup ok, but it faded pretty quickly and the rough texture was a PITA to clean .
I tried the AL's liner on the K5 I'm building now and am very pleased with how it came out, has texture but not too rough and is supposed to be UV resistant etc etc.
Just my $.02 , whatever you end doing is going to turn out awesome, keep up the great work  :D

thanks man....

ah, the Herc.... I've definitely had misgivings since I bought a gal last year... my original plan was to buy another gal and the UV protectant qrt... then do a real nice thick application, like you get with Rhino or Line-X....

the whole floor will be zinc/filler/Imroned first, no matter what... same as the under carriage.. no matter what liner I run, I feel a proper paint system under it will yeild the most durable results..

what I was gonna do with the Herc is this.. control the grit to thickness ratio by running one gallon thru a paint strainer to remove the nonskid... that way I can put the last couple coats on top without grit to smooth out the sandpaper effect... never done it, but I've certainly done 100's on boat nonskid jobs in similar fashion with good results..

but I have had second thoughts lately as what product to actually use.. I only paid $50 for the Herc... now all these other liners have come out.. the Al's, that Lizardskin stuff... the idea of bringing in Line-X doesn't appeal to me on the financial end..

I'm not worried about the chalking too much... the whole back bed, and flat sections up front will have bedmat over the top... but I would like it to wash clean once I pull the mats...

I'd like the best product, but don't wanna pay a fortune either...

I was at the same crossroads when I was going to do mine, I wanted the end result of a Line X/ rhino , but, was not trying to spend a fortune either. I'm really happy with the way the AL's turned out, I will be using it inside of the Willy's when I get to that point as well. I also liked the fact that I sprayed the AL's and that you can adjust the texture by changing air pressure as well. I spent alot of time researching the DIY liners that are out there and everything else is a one component product, like paint (not that I have much knowledge of it) something that isn't catalized ( sp?) generally wouldn't be as durable as a product that is, right.?

Hey I can't remember what size tube did you use in your cage?

correct... Thats one of the mantra's I've been spouting in here for years..

The Al's is catalyzed?

I believe so, it is a muti-part system. As in, mix part A and B and then add in C which is the color, then you have a limited time to apply before it's a solid chunk of rubber looking stuff :D.

hmmmm....

damn he just had that "dented can sale" awhile back.. maybe a PM to, who is the vendor again? Blaze? sometime soon will be in order see what kinda coin...

I'm definitely open to be swayed on the final floor coating... i think that Lizardskin suff that vtblazer was using was pretty pricey..

thanks for the insight!

 No problem, I have gotten so many great idea's from you, I'm just happy I can give something back :D.

Oh, yes the vendor is Blaze.

Hey I can't remember what size tube did you use in your cage?

sorry man, missed this one... :o

the bulk of the cage is 2" x .120 DOM.... the 2 seat bars that run from door to door are 1.75"... all the console related bars, and the x-bar up in the dash are 1.5"....

NICE Paul.....looks real good. Are all those panels the laminate?

yeah, i'm working on the sides for the PC now..

that just the initial piece for the backwall... I'm doing a 6" deep tool cubby hole thing on the bed side..

but I need that piece up so I can figure out the in-cab side of it, for fitting up the pc sides, etc.....

it's gonna take a couple weeks to get the PC box done, the sides, ds front, etc.. soooo much easier working with glass, albeit itchy....... :doah::wink1:

thats a crap ton of progress over a weekend man.i also love the whole center floor area can be removed if need be.will definitely help with future swaps when the drivetrain has problems.
