thanks, I'm pretty stoked on it... should be a pretty fun rig to ride in... :D


right now I'm debating where to put the countersinks for the back panel... I'm planning on 6.... 3 down each side.. the only prob is that I really wish I had the PC cuz I'd like to see if I can flush mount it in the face..

if I can flush mount it with the display showing, it'll work perfect... it'll be about 6"s up from the bottom, then I'll have room for a DVD drive under it and the 2 lower, corner countersink mounts outboard of the drive...

I think that should work... Tho pricey as heck, I'm definitely running the solid state HD.. so I can't see why I'd have an issue running it on an angle....

I just hate to commit to welding in the mounts, and screwing myself later.... :doah:
 
oh, and on that note of, "wishing I had parts for mockup" thought... hopefully I'll have both my NWF twinstick and Lokar e-brake in around the 20th, so i can get those fitted up....

now I just need to refrain from ordering the PC! :wink1::eek1::doah::o
 
does anyone have a suggestion for a replacement material, or know what they use for air filters on comps? that plastic-y, scuffpad looking stuff? anyone know where I can get that in a large piece? like a sq ft or 2...
 
Actually you could pick up some small 1/4" thick foam from most any craft store and use that for a filter. It doesn't need to be really fancy, just enough to take the bulk of the particulates out of the air.

The other possibility is that stuff can be had, it is for a cat box, from a pet store or Wally world for pretty cheap. Not sure it is really neccessary, but it would work well.
 
yeah, I have an idea, and that'll work perfect... need to find black tho....

now I just need to get a couple nice fans for the other side..
 
WOW Paul! I never saw this thread before and your project :doah:.
Your doing a freakin SWEET job there.
When I first looked at it with all the marine parts, I thought you were
building a BOAT :haha:. There's too much to read in here but I stayed up
until 1:00 AM last night just going through it and still had to finish it today.
Some very cool ideas and I agree that the marine parts are far better then
some of the normal stuff offered for trucks. I'll keep my eye on this thread
now and can't wait to see the finished product some day.
I wish you were in Fl. to help work on my boat. I can tell by your work
that your one hell of a mechanic! :bow::bow::bow:

I don't know what you were thinking about for fans but I just checked my spare PC fans and
they're 12V so you might think about them. They're cheap and look cool.
If you use them to exhaust the box, you could you a regular air filter on the inlet as
fine as you want and any size. Just cut it to fit and make a slot to hold it?
Maybe bring air in from the bottom?

I contemplated air in the bottom, out the top when I first started thinking of this.. I ruled out the bottom due to wanting to be able to wash out the truck, and mounting the PC... tho now, with possibly mounting on an angle, that may have not been an issue...

I'm just gonna make the passenger side piece an intake side, and the driverside the exhaust... simple, easy to do and still effective as he!! considering the amount of space each side has........ was looking around Newegg the other night at fans... and yeah, the "case fans" will be an independent/switched circuit from the PC...

What I'm gonna do on the filter side is cut another piece of composite a little smaller than that side, to fit inside the panel.... then I'll bolt the 2 together.. then "machine" a bunch of chamfered, large holes thru both pieces in some pattern, then the foam will go between the 2 pieces of composite...
 
Paul, there's a pretty good selection of vacuum cleaner filters available at Wal-Mart. My vacuum uses like 3 different filters, and I'm 99% sure that one of them is one like you're describing. Another one is like a very small version of a modern automotive air filter--rectangular in shape, rubber gasket, with a folded/pleated paper design.

Just a suggestion... You may see something you like. :thumb:

I really like my install idea, think it would be a simple, one of a kind mod.. like a speedhole look... not that you'll see it behind the seat...

how about a washable metal one...

Fish tank filters would be another possible option.

Whatever you get make sure it is either washable or will always be readily available.

the pc/amp mount is basically done... as of now, the plan is to mount an amp to the back vertical wall... then the PC as mentioned on an angle, perpendicular to the face...

anyway, here you can see I changed the corner construction method to make it cleaner looking, more usable shelf space and vastly stronger than the angle just bedded in there.....

if you notice, there is a darker piece scabbed into the back, down thru the corner... and the 2 side flanges.. that is the same composite, just the fireproof version.. had some laying around... I created a lam of overlapping pieces on the back, and bottom, utilizing that gray version..

the back is 3/8 thick, the bottom is 3/8 thick, with 3.5" side flanges.. those lower flanges will have the additional countersinks for the side panels threaded into them..

so the pc shelf uses 4 3/8's bolts to bolt it thru the back panel. then it has 4 attaching the lower shelf to the sidepanels.

for the record, this stuff taps, very very well for a fiberglass product.. you'd really have a tough time getting it to take a fine tap well, but it makes beautiful course tapped holes... I've actually mounted fighting chairs in the cockpits of the sportfishs at work that way....

I'll see if i can remember to take a pic of the piece when it comes back out for prime, etc....

How is the vibration going to affect the unit?
 
I know the units come with the standard rubber isolator feet gig...

what I plan in addition is to have the face "float" in it's front panel hole... I also have something in mind for the shelf I'll have to make to mount it... it'll be the same composite construction.. but it does involve 2 actual shelves with more energy absorbing between the 2...

I wont know exactly till I have the PC.... definitely something I'm concerned to some extent over.. enough that the SSD is a given at this point...

It would be awesome to finally put a face to this Ryoken character I've been reading about for several years now..... and a caravan of K5s from the New England area out to Moab, UT would be absolutely epic!!!! There is nothing more awesome than a good cross-country road trip.
