87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

i saw that in the other thread, neat..... does it do ignition timing too?

Hey looking back through your thread at when you were cutting out the floor and replacing the supports. I did't see what you were using for supports on the body to hold it to height and keep it from deforming. Sorry for the hijack but I am getting ready to cut out my floor and it would be very helpful. Thanks.

When I talked with them last month it wasn't ready yet. I think they said something about March/April. I'm not running boost or care about the MPG so it wasn't an issue on my build.
Call thier tech line.. They are great to talk with.

ok.....i cut the floor everywhere except where the rear cab support is, and the 2 supports at the footwell, so i could blast the frame better.....

rear, b-pillar support

you can see all here....

if you go to, i think post #933, i go into the cab support job..

basically i split the job in 2.. did the rear support while leaving the front 2 in.. then once the back was done... i did the fronts.. it gives the body a good reference point...

so.... for the back... you saw how the floor was cut out.. i took my dif holder... 2 x 12" plank on the floor like 40, 45" long, with braced 2 x 12" uprights with notches cut for the axle to sit.. think sawhorse dimensions..

i put that on the 2 frame rails right in front of the rear cab support.. i then blocked and shimmed on top of that up to the ceiling.. right at the bodyline in front of the domelight... shimmed it nice and tight.... then cut out the back support.. replaced, yada, dropped, yada, welded.....

the front i did the same, but used a shimmed up jackstand off the ground, up under the lower firewall lip on each side... remove 2 front supports, etc, etc...

help?

Yes sir. It helps a lot. I guess my main concern was that when I cut out the floor the rest of the tub would distort or sag. I have it supported in the back (by the tank) and the front at the firewall Is that good or should I support it in the middle by the rear cab mount also?

Doing the cab supports one at a time makes sense. I am just nervous on body stuff I have never tackled anything like this before.

Thanks again

as long as you leave the back full cab support intact, have the front and back supported, (my back 4 mounts where left on}, you should be fine..

having the b-pillar/roof unsupported is what will cause an issue... which i did, thus the sawhorse gig... as you see in the pics, you can hack out a good portion of the floor....

eesh, you just reminded me, i need to get back under there and finish the undercarriage.... sand, grind, seam seal, prime, etc...

Once again your the man:bow: Your floor is the one that I am looking to as I tear into mine. I may be stealing some of your design.;)

Working under the rig is never something to look forward to. Take some pics while your down there would like to see how its coming on the bottom side.

right now it looks like poo.. pretty much raw steel... i do have a couple things i actually need to fab down there too..

but... the design worked out killer... super clean lines, super strong... i'll definitely take some shots when i get to that....

**** current priority shopping list*****

next check, clocking ring and circuit breakers

output flanges and paint the following check....

oh, one other thing i forgot to mention.... you'll notice i left the sill portion of my rocker... that was important as it helps control A to B distance correct.. so the door opening can only "rack" at that point, not rack and/or spread/close at the bottom..

if anyone is removing as much floor as i did i suggest they do the same, till the floor is in, then do the sills. or weld in a temp integrity bar down toward the bottom..

i want FULL control of the system and an understanding of what is involved, so when i do my 383, i'll know what changes need to be made...

Then Megasquirt is definitely the right place to go for you. It is a system for people that want to LEARN something about engine control systems.

There are definitely "easier" systems out there but none of them will give you the knowledge of how engine control systems work at a fundamental level.

Also, if you do decide to make major changes to your engine you simply hook up the trusty laptop and tune the system to your hearts content. No need to go back and forth with a chip burning house for changes. Granted a mass air system will self tune to a certain extent but even they have limitations as to how much you can change before you need a new base program burned.

I personally am a control freak :D not only can I change any table or map with megasquirt just like you can with other systems but the source code is available to boot. If I get a crazy hankering to control item X based on input from Y vs Z but only when A is active...I can do that...MwaHaHAHA!!!! Sorry, I got kind carried away there...:D The ultimate DIY, Built not bought.

yeah, i'd like to get it soon, before i get into the actual wiring of the dash/breaker panel... for mock-up locating/mounting work... i'm figuring MS2 v3.57 with a few mods... i'm gonna run the relay box too, it's perfect for a "from scratch" build imo..

just reminded myself, thats GOTTA be one of this weekends projects.... get the heat mocked up in the dash..

also gotta get a different e-mail addy, the MSefi forums wont let you use hotmail to register.... :(

oh, build note too...

started doing shifter mockup last night as best i can without the twinstick boot..

sheesh, wait till you see that center coonsole panel when done... quite a bit of sick composite, under panel structural stuff planned..... i need to have actual mounting points for the 2 shifters and e-brake (doing it's "stationary cable mount point too), then the locked compartment... pretty crazy down there... but hopefully it'll turn out pretty bada$$....

as soon as the twinstick boot gets here I'll start glassing it up... pics to follow....

Yep, They had MAJOR problems with spam bots messing up the forums bad all based from Hotmail. They basically had to blacklist all hotmail accounts. Kinda sucks but had to be done. If you want a free email account give gmail a try, It works well.

Have you decided what you will be doing for ignition and fuel injectors/induction yet? With a 4 bar MAP it sounds like "abnormal aspiration" is in your future. :D

I ended up needing to go with the extra code base with extensive ignition mods as I am running coil near plug off the stock LQ9 cam and crank trigger wheels.

well, it's initially coming back out with basically the stock 350 tbi..... i figure it'll be easier to tune that with it's mild mods and learn the in's and out of the tuning process.. that way when i do a hopped 383 (still GM stuff, just bigger injectors, etc), I'll be one step ahead on knowing how to tune it....

at this point, i'll leave the GM dizzy, but when i go 383, i'll do an MSD setup or something... i'm not crazy about the idea of running a crank trigger, so at this point i'll probably keep it in the dizzy...

Sounds like a good plan, since you are running the stock HEI distributor (7 pin module I assume) and the stock TBI injectors you should be able to run a bone stock MS2 with the base software with no mods.

What mods were you planning on for the MS to handle the future engine? I don't think you need to change anything hardware wise to handle an MSD distributor in the future.

Although, the stock HEI distributor is good to some fairly serious RPMs. Are you going to be spinning the 383 fast enough to justify the MSD or is it for the bling factor (nothing wrong with that)

Alot of people don't give the HEI the credit it deserves. They are a good distributor (the full electronic version) and I believe have been tested to over 8000 RPM (with the right coil and module).

yeah, stock 87 dizzy... the injectors are stockers, and intake.. but i've got cfm tech's tb and assorted goodies...

when i do the 383, it'll get the edelbrock intake, bigger injectors, new pump and maybe a custom tank at that time.. no forced induction, other than the functioning airbox/ cowl hood :wink1:, just a pretty healthy roller cammed 383, AFR's, etc.... in other words, as i normally do, i'll probably go off..... :haha: thus more than likely a billet dizzy...

and yeah, no real high rpm's, so the HEI isn't even an issue.... built for torque... i'm hoping to have about 425 hp and over 500 ft lb's when all tuned and done...

I'd like to keep my intricate soldering to a minimum, so i'll buy a prebuilt ms2 case and I assume autotune can/will install any mods for me... i dont mind a couple solders here and there, down the road, but i dont want to do the initial build, 274 resistors, yada, yada... :eek1:

I just want to get the absolute best MS setup in there off the bat.. i figured i'd go for the 4 bar cuz the truck will see some mountain time.. the HEI kit.. if USB is the better data way to go, maybe the internal serial/usb adapter... i may even do EGT...

and tho pricey, i want to run an A/F gauge, instead of relying on monitoring that on the LCD screen...

You mentioned a custom gas tank. Do you already have one in mind? I have never seen one for our vehicles?

I've mentioned it briefly.... matter of fact, it's Dave's sig line..... :haha:

sorry no cool aftermarket tank that i know of, I'll have it made... i have some pretty good "in's" with custom tank makers being I'm in the marine biz and order big dollar full custom tanks a couple times a year... i have one place right down the street from my house..

I'm figuring it'll run me 5, 600 range... fully baffled ss with a sump... and obviously I'll go as big as can possibly fit in that space... anything above the stocker will be a plus...

actually i have some other business under the back of the truck this weekend, i'll have to relook at that... for now it'll get the stocker back in there...
