87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

well..... my immediate thought is eliminate the 2 holes... then i was think of making 2 full length, rectangular ports at the bottom front, and top front edge... with a "tabbed" edge.. that i can fit, and screw a fiberglass piece to..

kinda like where i marked it out in paint here, top and bottom...

mockup18a.jpg

they have to stay over on that side of the box, on that side of the heater core... i'm thinking i may just cut off that whole sidewall with the 2 holes and put a new full piece in that extends top and bottom, to form that wall of the output tabs....

When I did this to my old TJ, I went to home depot, bought a washing machine outlet box, like this, and duct taped it to the face of the heater box, so the heater box holes fed into it. I used a little bit of foam tape to "seal" it up a little, & flipped it so that the holes for the water lines pointed up, to be used for the defroster.

Then, I drilled a 1" diameter hole in each of the two outward facing sides, near the bottom corner & used a bit of the TJ OEM ducting, (which looked a lot like wire loom), & jammed the two pieces into those holes.

I had three speeds of "combination" venting (defrost & floor at the same time) from my little homebrew heater & it would keep me, my wife & the 2 year old (at the time), nice & toasty in Buffalo, NY all winter long. I would usually have to turn it down on the 3 mile commute from our apartment to my office because I'd get too hot!!

I eventually put a manual heater valve, (controlled with a lawn mower throttle cable in the cab), in the inlet side of the heater core so that I could regulate the temperature a little on the fly. Then it would work as a "vent" & just blow ambient air inside the cab.

It worked really, really well, & I'd still be driving that little dude daily, if I hadn't gotten "hit-n-runned" the 3rd day we were living here in vegas.

Basically, I'm saying, that I had much the same idea without nearly the fab skills you have & the results were awesome.

The only thing that I'll recommend is that you take into consideration the fact that you WILL have to replace the heater core & fan motor someday, so build in a little ease of maintenance in mind of that.

Later,
Buddy

cool..... :D

I'll definitely be keeping the box "rebuildable"

gonna mock this all up tonight in cardboard.... right now I'm debating whether I wanna put a flapper door in it... complicate matters... :doah::haha:

build babble.......

I just came up with a killer idea for the heat... sweeeeeet.... :saweet:

probably not do the flapper now, but totally have the ability to add it when I want a future project... either solenoid fired, or cable...

but in the meantime I can build the diverter.... here is what I'm working with...

mockup.jpg

basically what I'm doing is just adding a 1-piece fiberglass diverter box to where that sidewall was... kinda like a shoebox lid fitting over it.. 3 screws top and bottom to fasten it..

that piece will have 2 lower "chutes" that feed each side console side panel floor heat... each of those will fit into a framed vent in the side panels.. this will help lock it all together... the top defrost will be a single upward "chute" to the center speaker hole... this will float at the top...

the way I'm gonna have to do the flappers when i get to it is 2 individual ones to close either defrost or floor... I'm thinking small solenoids and a double throw Contura... the actual flappers will be composite, 1 top, 1 bottom.. just gotta look around Mcmaster and figure out hardware... shafts, bushings, hinges, etc...

and....... yay, steel run tomorrow! :woot:

ya know, I'm usually a pretty decisive kinda guy... when I decide I want to do something a certain way, I'll buy or build whats necessary to do it... or get it close... :wink1:

but I can't make up my mind on a monitor for sh*t... :doah::haha: totally torn in my decision making...

I want a seriously killer LCD.... I've been looking at the Zenarc lineup, as I haven't been impressed with the Lilliput reviews...

part of me wants the biggest screen in there I can fit.... so i was looking at the 1020 TSV....

http://www.xenarc.com/product/1020tsv.html

thats the dimension I mocked up... super tight.... and i've also read, for as amazing as it's picture is, it's a little bulky for install... and may have some potential glare issues.. big screen and a moderate 300 NIT, compound the issue..

I do think my setup should be pretty good as far as glare goes, angle of the LCD, second gen roof, etc... but I'm wondering to myself, if I'd be better off going with a smaller, killer 1000 NIT LCD... like their new, 702TSV

http://www.xenarc.com/product/702tsv.html

going with smaller screen does give me the ability to upgrade to something larger down the road too...... and it also may very well "fit" that panel more proportionately.....

the smaller 702TSV

I'm willing to go upwards of $500, 600... obviously $300 to 400 would be nicer.... both those units cost about the same, about 500....

I'm just concerned about the 7" diagnol being kinda small... anybody have any opinions? suggestions on another brand, etc?

if you ever wondered what the Summit heater looked like disassembled, here ya go... :haha:
mockup017.jpg

NOTE TO SELF: Don't do fiberglass work around anything you want to stay clean! That WAS a new heater...yes? :eek1:

With regards to a screen...If I were in your shoes I think I would be Choosing the super bright screen over the size. Does not matter how big the screen is if it is not bright enough to be seen in the first place. But, that is just my opinion...and you know what opinions are like. :haha:

One other advantage I could see to going with a smaller screen would be room to mount in some USB ports / card readers / DVD ROM drives (nice slot load slimline laptop drive) in the same panel for easy access...Unless you had some other places in mind. :D

Cheers,

Rufus

:haha:

actually i used it in the truck for a year or so, now it's been kicking around the garage for over a year... :doah: but you are correct... when I get into composite projects the dust level in the dungeon goes thru the roof.... it's like throwing a 10 lb bag of flour in front of a big fan when I'm circular sawing that stuff.....

I'm gonna run all USB, drives, readers, etc back in the PC part.... I'd always planned on that... one, for proximity... and 2, i want to maintain a clean border around the LCD, whether small or large...

i just wish they made that 10" with that high NIT # that the 7" has... I'd pay for it... while the bigger 10" might get a glare issue here and there, I'm betting at night or the right conditions, it would look absolutely sick... i've read the picture is amazing...

I'm leaning toward the killer 7" at this point... safer pick... couple years down the road, I could go bigger if i feel the need.....

started cutting out diverter pieces today..... the design came out WAY simpler than I thought it would.. I'm pleased with it... but first i had to bore the heater mounting holes that come for like #10 screws, out to 3/8's... :wink1: it's now 4 3/8's flanged bolts mounting it up to the cage with the same welded nut style on the back I've been using thruout the build... should make future removal/install super easy...

pic update tomorrow...

come on you tech-type guys.. lectric, seafarer, etc, I know someone has some thoughts on monitors..... hook a brother up with some insight..... or by some miracle, tell me if I'm on the right track..:confused:

well.... off to the dust pit dungeon.... :grind::hack::weld:

well in my job they have 7" diagonal screens on the ddin decks. and they arent that large. if it were me i would go with a 10" it will be way more visible at all times.

I think you were on the right track. I would go with a brighter screen in a truck, over a larger screen. I haven't looked into touch screens much myself, but the market for standalone screens is probably pretty limited. You could look into touch overlays, but I'm not sure how rugged they are.

When you are looking at things like a touchscreen, it isn't necessarily the brightest screen that you want. You want to see how shiny the screen is! If it is very shiny and bright, it will tend to be blotted out by sunlight much easier than a duller looking screen. Most standard LCD's work great in the light because they have a non-reflective surface, but touchscreens can be much harder to find in a non-reflective surface.

see, now this could all be solved if I could see each in person... :doah:

I've been trying to read everything I can on em, mainly the car pc forums, trying to get the lowdown...

well, I've got 2 weeks to decide! :doah::haha:

ok, here's my partial update from earlier while the diverter jigsaw puzzle dries...

3/8's mounting bolts replacing #10's...... time to clean that up and get it in zinc..... :doah:

mockupheat001.jpg

here's the main diverter panel, the front wall.... the 2 "feet" at the bottom are the ducts to the side panels...

mockupheat012.jpg

the back wall.....

mockupheat013.jpg

the speaker hole

mockupheat007.jpg

so I'm over looking around in my toolbox for something, and I come across this vent I have.... god only knows what vehicle it's out of.... but as luck would have it, it is EXACTLY the right dimensions for the top register... sweet.....

cut out, and fitted....

mockupheat008.jpg

mockupheat011.jpg

the diverter is getting it's initial glue up right now... hopefully thruout the week I can get it finished up... when it's complete, I'll show how the flappers will work when i get to that...

so.... I was gonna make a new thread, but screw it, I'll just throw a quickie up here.... stopped by my welder bud's place to pick up some steel for the rear winch bumper (hint, hint) and remembered my camera....

here's a couple lousy pics I took of his sweet 38......

shop007.jpg

shop008.jpg

he's also got a crazy collection of lathes..... think there's 5 various ones here..... couple of em incorporate car tranny's... you can see the shifter on one....

shop005.jpg

this shop has just about every fab tool you could want.... hydrobender from his racecar chassis days, 394 welders, yada, yada.... he's anally neat, more than anyone I've ever met....

but i think the neatest tool he has is this old school plasma cutter rig.. it's a freakin model train that holds the torch, and you lay out different track for what you want it to cut! it's soooo cool, dinosauric and slow compared to today's options, but neat nonetheless....:D

i wanna say that vent looks very similar to the defroster vent off the dash in my 80s rigs. to keep things from falling in the vent.

actually, now that you mention it, it probably came out of this truck... there's probably another one kicking around from the other side..

:mad::mad::doah::mad::doah::mad:

well, the Screaming Banshee, aka, my compressor finally sh*t the bed last night.... ran for 45 minutes and made 20 psi... :haha::(

gonna have to step up and make my next "parts purchase" a decent oiled unit... I need it.... i've got tons of electric stuff, grinders, saws, die grinder, etc, but i already could have used air tonight... just sucks, not where I planned on spending the next $7, 800.... looks like I'm putting off my headers for a bit.... :(

tho, in some sick way, I'm grateful to not have to listen to it anymore.. :haha: i utterly despised that thing...

I'm thinking I'll keep the 60 gal tank and add it to the new system.....

I'm thinking this IR unit will be enough with the other 60 gal inline... hard to justify the jump up to $1000 to 1200 for a 2-stage, 5 h.p unit.... free shipping from Northern too.....

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_158284_158284

eh, maybe i'll try to step it up to the 5 hp, 18 cfm one.....

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_211720_211720

Its weird how they show the cfm at 90 psi for the 5hp model but not the 3hp model  I would shoot for the 5hp myself :D

that 5 hp with 120 gals of tank would be sweeeeet.... looks like a 6 am start for me tomorrow, start clocking that OT...
