87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

Paul,

Storage is definitely important....

On my trips to Moab it became clear that you need a place for the cell phone, wallet, sunglasses, trail maps, sweatshirt, water bottles, GPS, etc.

That's true for keeping things from flying around on the trails, but even for simple things like stopping for lunch somewhere and parking an open-top truck (that can't be secured easily). Having a nice lockable spot to throw everything means you don't have to carry all that crap inside with you.

It seems like a trivial thing at first, but having adequate storage can really make the trip a lot more enjoyable.... Just like cruise control, A/C or a decent radio does.

A few ramblings from that "other guy"

:usaflag:

well, GPS will be covered with the PC...... :wink1:

the center lockable compartment is perfect for the smaller stuff, wallet, sunglasses, etc... but definitely not the kinda compartment to keep sweating water bottles, jacket,etc....

like i said, it was definitely a known forfeiture when designing the cab... same with AC and CC.... and i would do it again in a heartbeat... thats how much I like what i've done with the console, overall cab layout, should be pretty sick when done IMO..

I think what I'm gonna do is start driving it and see what the rig wants from me, as it pertains to what i find myself bringing, storing, etc.... then customize/modify the existing to work, as opposed to pre-emptively doing something now... i've already done enough "planning ahead" ... :haha: heck, just look at the overhead console switching...

you guys are definitely right, and i would probably preach it to someone else... but to be honest, it's something I was willing to give up... i do have a cargo area after all.... and tools, parts, recovery gear was strongly considered... my creature comforts? not sooooooo much maybe..... :doah: :haha:

as long as i can hang with some tunes and surf some CK5 on my LCD sitting in the parking lot of the bank waiting for it to open, I'm good... and for now I do have ONE cupholder going in! :woot::doah::haha:

You can't under estimate the importance of that. Does it have some kind of retainer to keep the beverage from jumping out of the holder? I've had Pop dumped on me from that scenario...you know the big 44 from Speedway that has a crappy lid on it to begin with. You hit a whoop or a big shift in vehicle tilt and its all over the place. I try to use screw on cap type beverages now.

This. :deal: :D

It would suck to tear apart all the custom work you thought you wanted to put in the stuff you end up needing.

yeah, the drinkholder is just a standard drop-in marine one... same one that was in my old console....

I would have loved to run a pair right in front of the shifters... but i can't put one in front of the twinstick... cables are in the way....

passenger is SOL at this point... :haha: maybe i'll do a fancy clamp-on one on the A-post cage tube on that side, below the dash... DS one is getting an extinguisher there if it fits well...

Passenger can hold there own unless you want them getting out all the time to take pics:doah:

Everyyone has different needs as far as storage goes after you drive it for a while I am sure a couple things might get modified

Dungeon update......... :whistle::haha::wink1:

scored a pretty nice 220 heater for the garage... brand new, been sitting on a shelf 10 yrs... 17,000 BTU ceiling mount jobbie...

dungeonheater001.jpg

dungeonheater002.jpg

dungeonheater003.jpg

gave him $40 for it....

should be a much better way to heat the dungeon.... over my dinosauric scary propane mr. heater from he!!....

you guys'd laugh if you saw that thing... :haha:

bait taken like a hungry trout..... :haha: it's down there warming up the dungeon right now for some spraying later... :eek1: :woot:

bought it at the Englishtown swapmeet about 12 yrs ago for 5, yes i said $5.... only thing wrong with it was it didn't have the part that lets it sit on top of the tank...

I just lay the focker on the floor... it's been killer... but a few yrs ago the reg sh*t the bed, so you control propane with the bottle valve... than the pushbutton valve on the one burner crapped out last yr.. so it's down to one burner, and as you can see by the pics, that only has 1/2 a screen left to it...

it never used to bother me, just crack a window open, and i'd let that thing run all day... but this year it's been a little annoying smelling it... so this fell in my lap at just the right time...

just gotta watch the electric bill..

my 30 lb bottle.....

dungeonheater004.jpg

the orb of warmth...

dungeonheater005.jpg

yeah, I'm definitely not b*tchin... that thing earned it's keep a thousand times over...... i musta burned 1000 lb's of propane thru that thing over the years! :eek1:  :haha:

but i've worked down there plenty of times with no heat... but it's been hanging around 30 here in joysey the last week or so... not great when i'm doing lots of painting..

just nuked the garage for about 3 hrs with the Orb of Warmth..... shut it down... then shot satin black.. hopefully it dries a little flatter this time... it's the viewable side of the console panels.... maybe some pics tomorrow night....

my bro in law (electrician who's installed a bunch of these) says they work pretty sweet.... gotta stop at homo depot for a breaker and some bx, hopefully i can get it in this weekend....

it's gonna be a simple install for me.. i've got a new 200 amp service... about 20' of bx cable and a double pole breaker for it...

I'm pretty sure similar new units run 2 to $300, so i figure i got a smokin deal... but anything under $100 would be cheap i suppose.. used and cheaper, even better..

Paul, I had that same exact heater before I went electric....You'll love the electric. I leave mine @ 50 all the time, its SOOOO nice to walk into a warm shop in the winter.

I switched from a torpedo heater that was propane to a small electric furnace, when I was out in the shop alot in the winter, I ran about a 100 bucks of propane through it a month

Electric bill went up about the same. I liked the electric alot better, but I have a wood stove that is going in sometime in the near future.

Yup I've got two of those heaters, had them almost 20 yrs. They have earned there kept. Had two get a new AC unit (5ton) at the house this year so now I have the furnace that come out of the house at the shop waiting to be installed.

pssssh, I keep a freezer in my garage. That puppy gives me at least a degree warmer than outside. works nicely! :D

yeah, but your a pup bud....

I remember back when I was your age I built a Dodge in an igloo with a hammer and visegrips! :woot::whistle::doah::rolleyes::haha:

well.... I'm somewhat annoyed with 2 failed batches with this supposed satin black... both test sprays are damn glossy... luckily i can figure this out while I bring the composite panels thru black, before I overcoat everything, all the panels and the interior... I'll do a final wetsand on the exterior composite pieces, then shoot the interior and overcoat the panels...

you'll see here that the center shifter piece is just in sh*tty flat black primer.... the finished black will be about 1/2 way between that flat, and the "now glossy" side panels, etc...

and the steel section at the top rear of the console will be black.. as will the little alcove corner ceiling area, where my maplight is going, to the left of the LCD panel...

lot's of slutting these days.. :haha: full load of pics here....

allright008.jpg

wow, the flash really makes the grap handle look orange in this shot....

allright001.jpg

allright003.jpg

allright005.jpg

so the plan at this point is, to get the cab prepped for copper and black this weekend and get the satin issue worked out... maybe squirt the copper on the firewall and such....

that way during the week, I'll do a real nice wetsand on ALL the black fiberglass pieces, except the cargo stuff... thats 9 console pieces, heat diverter, overhead, megasquirt board and an overcoat on the dash bezel, glovebox panel and electronics box... so all those pieces look the same... I'll just have to match it when i do the cargo ones, and whatever i do for door panels...

so i'm planning on doing a "final black shoot" next weekend.... this all should time out pretty well as i'll be off a week or 2 at the holidays to bang out a bunch of progress... :woot:
