87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

nada... the crawl ratio with the 5:13's is 31 to 1.. not exactly stellar.... but most of the stuff around here is goo, water, trails and sand...

thats it? haha I can actually hold my 70:1 crawl ratio over your head

That might be the only thing I have on ya though.... :doah:

BTW: I take it you're running a 700R4 and a 205?

yup.... I'm hoping the 5:13's will get me by for around here...

tho i haven't looked into it, I could always do the Lomax 3 to 1 kit down the road easy enough....

I wheel in pretty much the same stuff and I have only used granny gear and 4lo in a small handlful of situations. In all those circumstances I could have used 2nd gear and feathered the throttle. It would take more finesse but thats what wheeling is about! :D

btw the truck is looking good, stop second guessing yourself and get this pig running by the spring! :thumb:

thanks... eh, springs pushing it... I'm shooting for july/aug...

Let me just say welcome to page 33 :eek1:

You will never know if your happy with the crawl ratio till you actually wheel it for a while.

Since your not doing rocks very often and have good axle gears I would say you will be fine. Just watch the tranny temp and wheel it.

Won't be that hard to add a shifter will it? If so just do an airshift for the doubler if it needs to be added. Or switch to a 241 t case that would help alot.

I'd swap out my cable twin stick shifter to a triple.. the biggest issue would be modding new 1410 shafts from Jesse and my x-member.....

whereas, tho not cheap at $2500 for the Lomax box, it would be a bolt-in.. I think it'd be cheaper and WAY less hassle.. the Lomax box would get me to 47 to 1.. and a brotherhood bonus of my babybutt smooth 205 being for sale! :haha:

but as you said, I'll be wheeling it for awhile before I did anything... for the truck use, it may be fine as-is...

i should prob change my settings of how many posts per page.... cuz i see 321pages lol.

I was thinking too, with all the work you have done I`m sure you tuck will be very good at what you want it to do,would it be that hard to change the tc after it is done if its its not low enough geared after its finished. If it was me ,and I know its not, I would go with it and see how it works.

The build threads on here give me insperation and hope .... if only I hade the time ,money and talent some of you guys have. GOOD JOB!!

Just remember its all about what important to you. Drives me nuts when my wife wants to go out to eat a couple times a month and that could have been truck money. Most of us weren't born with a torch in our hands we learned through much trail and error and most of us learned because we couldn't afford to buy even the smallest little bits and pieces. I would bet money the best fabricators here remember when they were first learning and scrounging steel cause they could not afford to really buy it, any bits and pieces would do.

I really do think you will be good with the crawl ratio Paul, its not the best but the first gear and the axle gears make up for alot. Then consider you will not be doing the most hardcore rockcrawling, except occasionally (I hope to see you in Moab someday man) I really think you will be absolutely fine.

Oh one more piece of advice, if you get bit by the rockcrawling bug, just build a buggy :D

Its easier

sometimes i forget how i may be perceived on the introwebz... as i mentioned, i live like a pauper to dump money in my rig.. I'm at a time when i can do it, it's just me in the house, I can live on raman noodles, etc... I'm willing, tho my body isn't most times, to spend hrs and hrs down in the dungeon..

and i do understand where people think of the "skillz".... i look at it more like wisdom... it helps, but isn't a requirement... I remember when i was young and dumb... but if you can dream it, you can do it.. lot of young people prove it every day in here...

but i will say, in a sick way, I'm grateful for my various torturous work endeavors over my life... I've done everything from restoring mixers, planes and vettes to running a frame machine and painting 20 a week to fiberglass and electrical goofyness of boats.. I guess the sum of that is the pics you see.... ;)

can you imagine where this build would be if i actually had money? I can, much to my own demise! :doah: :haha:

and thanks MAX, hopefully some of my idea's have kindled some fab creativity in you guys, or at least kept ya entertained..

Oh I think I can Paul. :woot: I can see several thousand dollars being spent nearly every week for several weeks in a row:eek1:.

Oddly enough your truck in my mind is still kind of a budget build truck (not in the same sense as that term is used mostly really) Its just the attention to detail and doing things the way you wanted too.

Hey Max use this website as inspiration get out build your own stuff. As much as I would like to have my daully or my Jimmy painted at a body shop I still can't afford to, so I will research, ask questions etc and do it myself. Everyone is capable of doing such things. No matter what.

Actually I can build, but I just don`t have the time or the extra cash to do so, just spent today 1200 on new tires for the dd. Last month it was a new washer and drier for the house, plus we got twins that are 9 years old that nead sh#t. And we milk cows 140 of them twice a day 365. In no way I am complaning I love it! If I ever get some time to build what I want..... but I am happy to watch and learn for now.

Like I said good job everyone! Sure is fun to watch.

:haha:

no rattlecanning this weekend... well, other then some Crusader blue on the inside of the cage tubes for corrosion... I had to finish up the staked flanges on the bed today... holes thru the floor, drill some boltholes, etc.. finally, all the cage flanges are bolted up and done....

gotta do some spot-priming and seamsealing during the week... then a BIG satin black shoot over my week off at x-mas.......

oh duh.... I'm an idiot.. that wasn't what you where asking about Dave, the sanding... :doah:

I'm lucking out so far... been bouncing around enough between hand and machine sanding, flanges, etc, that i haven't even come close to having the fingers bleeding..

when i was roughing out the duraglass on the floor corners it was getting bad... 36 grit tears ya up.. right now it's been a fair amount of 180-ing primer, than taking those scratches out with 320 for paint.. it's a faster, more efficient approach... and it's a f*ckton to get ready...

been on a spraygun kick lately... have all my guns out, going over what needs a little work, rebuilt one JGA last night.. gonna do my Binks #7 next week...

oh, new heats in... it rocks the dungeon pretty good.. when it's 20 in there, it'd take a long time to get warm... but if i run the propane for a 1/2 hr or so to take the edge off, it does an awesome job once the room is maybe 35, 40 at bringing it up, and maintaining a nice 55, 60....

allright005-1.jpg

it's really gonna save my butt when i go to paint next week.. flattening agent does not like the cold... you'll have to excuse the cheezy install.. the dungeon is such a disaster... all that rocks gotta come down next year...

oh, day in the life stuff for your amusement......

took these so they'd be saved on the comp... pics of pics... stuff I built back in the day..... and I do mean built, from rotating assembly to buffing... every nut/bolt, etc...

63 Buick Wildcat.... rarest one you'd probably ever find... convertable with strangely enough, factory AC... rare 465 with dual quads... frame up... did qrters, blasted, floors, yada, yada...

allright008-1.jpg

67 427 4 spd Vette..... another ground up... car was super fun to drive.. crossblocked that body for a week straight! :doah: :haha:

allright007-1.jpg

and my fave... my pride and joy... our wrecker.... Autocar.. all new sheetmetal, glass, blasted, interior, etc... truck came out awesome......

yeah Paul, I meant the sanding:D

Do you have a way to keep the heat circulated in the dungeon. I have a ceiling fan in both of my bays, and it keeps it within 5 degrees or so, even close to the overhead door.

I keep mine on all the time (4" insulation throughout) and at about 45*, I'll bump it to 55 or so while I'm working out there. With a sweatshirt on, its just right.:waytogo:
Digin the Autocar, what great trucks they were. They just seems brute tough, and classy at the same time.
I can so appreciate the paintwork you do Paul. I would love to have seen that Vette. Mine is showing some aging bodywork marks now (13 years on it)

the heater has a fan that blows pretty good, you can actually feel it about 1/2way across the room...

other than that, no... being a body/marine/glass guy, I normally have ALL kinds of fans, especially box fans... but my last one just cr*pped out recently... need to pick up another cheapie at Wallyworld... it'd help just running that on low somewhere in the room.. ceiling fans wouldn't be viable.. but I'm very pleased considering that thing is heating 2 bays.... plus, it's a million times safer than running the Orb of Warmth...

the Vette was the stock off-white with the nassau blue.. loved that job... all the hotrods where shot in lacquer... mixers, tri-axles, etc in gallons and gallons of Imron...did a couple other hotrods too, 56 conv Buick, 71 Monte, etc.... those 3 guys spent stupid money thru Hemmings...

I love bodywork... the processes, sanding, adhesion, etc, etc... maybe because it wasn't some god-given talent you had to have... like airbrushing a horses head, etc... bust your a$$, be thorough, pay attention to detail, etc and it comes out nice.. love to mask... and i actually love to sand.. crossblocking panels, "seeing" it become a perfect substrate to paint, etc...

I am nuts tho... :dunno: wait till you see the floor next week in black... :pimp: I just got done wet crossblocking it out.. it's like a freakin hood...... :eek1: and it's my damn floor! :doah: :haha:

here's some more "kill time while primers drying" pics of pics.. wow, blurry... please santa bring me a camera.. :haha:

the wrecker getting fueled......
