looks like my only choice for a prefilter down the road will be a red K&N.. surprised they don't offer it in black....

I was kinda turned off by the whole elastic thing.... but now I'm guessing that elasticy one your wrap the filter, then install, hiding the edges... would probably look good like that..

it's said to be run dry... i'm also guessing the foamy ya run oiled... if i went with the foamy I have to allow for a little more room in the airpan..

my main concern will be moisture... so I'm thinking an oiled prefilter would be better... albeit not as maintenance friendly probably as the dry...

id go with the black chevy one myself.that looks much better imo.the red should match your cage which i believe is a redish color.should look good in contrast with the shock hoops crossing it.

yeah, the hole shock tower/tie bar assembly is going black... tentatively, it should run a couple inches in front of the airpan and a tad lower... actually I hope to be working on that a bit this weekend too...

Paul I dont' think the nylon filter cover would seal too good over the filter and under the lid....it seems like it would bunch up (wrinkles). I have an Outerwears that is the same stuff, and its a little stiff on the edges....made to keep the big stuff and sand out of your air filter.

I think your right.. that's gotta be just for a standard 14" air filter.. obviously thats an issue for me, with the airpan, there is no "lower" lip to hook on...

maybe I'll order the foamy up next week... started mocking it all up tonight, gonna be interesting...

What I like about your air filter idea is that you dont have to take the damb thing off every time you want to look at the top of the motor.

I like the black anadized lid... looks cool!

yup, the air filter doesn't have to come off every time ya wanna work on something.. I think it's gonna work out excellent having the bottom pan/lampshade all one piece...

I'm actually putting in little lips for the filter to sit in, and for the glued in foam gasket too... the gasket will be attached to the pan, not the hood..


speaking of.. what's the FIRST thing you should do with your new $800 hood?

cut a big hole in it of course!

you should see the look of glee I get every time I get to holesaw a hole in the bottom of the boats.... some sense of satisfaction... or cutting a deck/hull out with a circular saw.... great fun!

Have you ever seen a functional cowl induction hood? Like on a first gen. Camaro? That's what's going on here. It's all custom, cause Chevy never did it on these trucks.

yup, it's a twist on early chevy functional cowls.... whereas early Chevy cowls drew air thru an engine feed on the air cleaner, they also had the vacuum operated flapper on the cowl...

what I'm doing is turning the cowl into a cold air box... all intake air comes in from the base of the windshield.. the pan is sealed off to the engine compartment..

here's a oaktag template of the airpan... the big foam gasket i pictured earlier mounts to the edge, then seals to the underside of the hood...

here's the initial pan plate out of composite with the foamy just laying up there...

the back will be shortened up a bit by the firewall... but it will be straight across, it'll have a back angle wall to the pan... once I get the salad bowl piece done, I'll start working on the back...

the airpan will be complete before i do the hood modification.. which are extensive.. more on that later....

and like i mentioned the gasket and filter will have recesses they sit in... the gasket one being a bit deeper.. so in the end you wont be seeing just that 1/4" edge at the bottom of the gasket, but a radiused corner that goes up about an inch.. the filter will have much smaller detents, just to keep it located...
