87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

btw, this hood is a f*ckton of work.. :doah: bloody fingers sanding this one.... :haha:

I had to backstep a bit too... doing my final fairing/sanding of the scoop area, I decided I want to also closed cell foam the voids in the factory construction in addition to the area I had done.

so now last night I just bored 6 big holes in the hood to foam it tues.. so it'll be next weekend by the time i get it even in primer..

all good, plenty of other things to work on...

Hey Paul what size cowl is that? I found a guy in Ohio that makes the fiberglass ones for $260 + $30 packaging fee and $110 shipped to a business address.

That one was 3"

It might be too much for my little blazer though :doah:

it's 3.5.... the majority of cowl hoods are 2.. and be very leary of where you buy fiberglass body parts from or you may be in for WORLDS of bodywork.. especially at that kind of price..

Ok. Yah id like a 2", itd fit better on mine i think, not sure. Ill getcha a link later. Cant link stuff on my phone.

go with a metal Goodmark than...

That's what I got on mine, ordered it from Summit, fits great! Some places had it cheaper but summit beat them all on shipping. Besides if it arrives all banged up then you have a reputable customer service to handle your claim. :deal:

yup, for 2", it's definitely the way to go.. most economical, quality approach...

the only reason I went glass was for the 3.5.. and the ease of fab with the whole airpan gig...

alrighty... here's the last mockup before primer/paint...

the screen is going to be about even with the cowl vent edge sheetmetal.. I just glassed in the screen mounting blocks after this pic was taken..

the gauges will mount in the expanded steel screen with angle rings.. fuel pressure, line pressure and vacuum in Autometer Pro Comp's...

and a bit more angle to show how far under they'll be tucked...

just did one in the wanted section. but f*ck it, it's for this anyway...

my deepest admiration to anyone who's got one of these to sell me.. a cowl clip off a 81 cowl vent.. anyone got a parts rig they could pilfer one from?

pretty sure they are not available thru LMC, etc...

yes, my bad, that should have read 81 and up...

i think everything up to 91 should have it.. there are 2 per truck, but both ds and ps appear to be the same..

I have a few I can send you. I'm not a paying member right now so I can't get your addy from when I sent you the headlight buckets. Hit me at [email protected] and I'll send them your way.

Glad to see you're back working on this truck.:waytogo:

I got an 8" 4 jaw last week off of eBay for $61 + the cost of a flat rate box. The spindle thread size was listed incorrectly but the listing included a part number that showed it was a Craftsman 1 1/2 by 8. That size is what the South Bend 9" run as well, so any chuck with that spindle size will automatically have the price inflated.

I also have a Jacobs 59B 3/4" chuck that's really useful for smaller items. If you see one for cheap, I would snag it.

cool, I noticed your south bend in your recent posting.. didn't realize it was the same spindle... I wondered why there was so much activity in 1.5 x 8tpi stuff....

I've since learned that tho i find my Atlas neat, it isn't near the quality of a south bend, or even a Logan....

but it should be fun to mess with... :D

got 1 tailstock up and running other than I need a woodruff for the handle and MT1 centers for it.. I'll get a live one and a drill chuck...

lost an 8" 4 jaw last night at about $75.. but today i won a 5" 3 jaw for $45... got my eye on a couple 4 jaws coming up...

A 3 jaw so far has suited all of my needs; I bought this one mainly for the size and reversible jaws as my 3 jaw only has outside jaws.:doah: I actually don't have any centers, live or dead. A bull nose would have been nice for those spindles though but eBay doesn't seem to have much in the way of (used) American made centers for what I'm willing to pay.

Having the lathe opens up so many possibilities like you said. For instance, I was going to buy weld washers for my link brackets, but then realized I could just make them from all the hole saw drops I save.:pimp: With your fab skills and ingenuity you should be able to turn out some "now why didn't I think of that" parts.

thanks, I'm sure the first thing I do worthwhile, will get a "this rocks!" :haha:

so a bit of build babble...

for now, I'm concentrating on bodywork pretty much on the rig... get the hood thru paint, ds fender and side.. this involves probably 4 or 5 days of bodywork to finish off the fender and section the rear qrte.. a day to strip/prep the tailgate... plus the time to finish the hood bodywork , prime, trim/paint everything, etc.. so it's a bunch of solid labor I can bang with little cash outlay...

I have almost a gallon of primer, and qrt of clear, but I'll need a qrt of the copper chromabase... but that beats the daunting shopping list that is my suspension/running gear... :doah:

other than paint, the one thing I'd like to get done on it over the next month or 2, is to get a new windshield in it.. not sure if the rubber weatherstrip is usable.. gotta hunt that down, or have the glass guy get one... gotta call around on that one...

oh, I never cease to amaze myself with the kooky, pain in the arse, sh*t I come up with to build.... :doah: :eek1:

from one project to the next... gee, this is kind of involved and stupidly time consuming... :haha:

oh, frame for the gargolye screen is bent... came out killer.. it's gonna be a nice touch that it's the same construction as the front grill... to me anyway... :haha: I'll finish it when I get the hood in primer..

I thought the custom summit heater was pretty cool, the glovebox breakers pretty neat and the center console badarse, but this airpain deal has turned into quite the mod unto itself.... :doah: :haha:

and thats with bailing on the whole flapper gig... :screwy:

Awesome work as always, Paul. :waytogo:

I still think that the cowl/hood would look much better without that profile line though. I'd never mention that to anyone else, but I know that you have the skillz to make it into a pretzel if ya wanted. :D

I'm gonna see how it looks painted... I tend to agree with ya, more snotty, pro street type look, and i could always change it down the road if I desire, but I'll see how it looks with it first.... it's just a bunch of work I'd like to throw at other stuff right now...
