87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

not to go too Mutt in here, but it does pertain heavily to this build goodness..

I've actually had my eye out for something cool for free.. but have failed to so far... I've been trying to "acquire" a fiberglass dockbox for the last 6 months... they turn up from time to time in various disrepair for free.. but not lately...

buying is out as they run $500 to over a grand new...

paint it black...

but f*ck it, I'll run a truck box.. I see chrome ones all the time for $75 to 150... just douche it black... it'll add eleventy hundred percent functionality/use to the rig...

the one thing I'll have to do is get that other saddle tank up and running, 18 gal capacity drives me nuts...

but, I foresee toy's, AMAZING toys, in the K5's future.... :saweet:

something like a truck box should fit well..

I actually think a small truck box, like for a yota or something would work better.. but I'm not gonna be fussy...

f*ck it, as long as nobody smashes me, it's good! :haha:

no worries, all fear the angry mallard... :pimp:

hmmmm, now what to buy for this... primer, paint, windshield, suspension, joy...

oh, but I will finish the paint work on Mutt this summer at least... get new roof lights..

maybe redouche the bed/box in the black duck blind paint after that.... :pimp:

couple little patches by the VIN to do this afternoon, and get the defog hole cut.. but it's coming together...

gonna add the round rod to it on tues or weds when it comes in....... and hopefully make the plexi mounting frame next weekend.....

but I'll spend this weekend doing the finish welding/grinding on the patches at least.. including the 6 holes left... once the patch welding is done, I gotta cut out for the plexi window...

That's sweet Paul!

Heck I think it looks better with no dash pad. I may have to try this someday...

I think a bunch of guys will try to do what your doing with the dash after you finish it.

Looks cool!:thumb: I always liked the all steel dashes on 60`s Chevy trucks.

What gauge steel is that dash made of?

I think 18, it's pretty healthy...

I think it's gonna work out pretty cool in the end... fair amount of steps and processes, but it's going relatively smooth... it's not exactly the most "exacting" piece of sheetmetal around... bit flimsy once it has no support around it..

that's the main reason for the round rod, to give it more of a "backbone"... I'm thinking 3/16 or 1/4 for that one..

than I'm also thinking of carrying that around the ends, to border the sheetmetal as it circles the corner tubes... may go a tad smaller with that end rod...

there's also the possibility of round rod framing the plexi window opening... which would kinda carry over that "rod framed" theme from the grill and gargoyle catcher...

Oh 18 thicker than I thought it would be. No problem welding it then.
It`s going to look trick when your done!

actually, now that I think about it, it could be 20.. I'm using Mutt's old hood for patch material, and it's pretty similar, just not stamped like the dash.. either way, pretty much standard MIG sheetmetal work..

Looking' good Paul!

I like metal dashes.... It's definitely an old-school vibe. Any thoughts about the paint for it? I've had problems in the past with strong reflections of color into the windshield on sunny days. It can be pretty distracting while driving so I was wondering if you have any tricky ideas in mind?

so.... the tentative path at this point, is to have the dash,

be metal, primed and painted the satin black as the rest of the interior, roof, panels, etc...... no material, no foam....
:waytogo:

the intention at this point is to do the same satin black that is on the rest of the interior components... I had contemplated going with something textured.. but for now, smooth, satin black is the tentative plan.. I'm not foreseeing any glare issues, but I've been wrong before..

edit - too slow.... ;)

I am looking at those pictures and I am thinking to myself...man, in a weird "frankenstein" kind of way those weld spots look cool.

If you could place weld spots in a "pleasing" pattern it would look pretty cool and "frankenstein"....

But...I haven't had my fourth cup of coffee yet...

or...have you considered gelcoating the dash top?

I would never gelcoat it, for various reasons..

#1 being that gelcoat's #1 bad attribute is it's lack of UV protection and how quickly it oxidizes.. ESPECIALLY ANYTHING OTHER THAN WHITE, COLORS, BLACK.... look at boats, they chalk out after a few seasons in the sun, especially red/blue/etc gel's...

a black gelcoat dash under a magnifying glass? nada :haha: I'm a masochist, but not stoopid.. :pimp:

#2 metal is far from the ideal substrate to gelcoat.. can it be done? sure.. should it? prolly not...

whole day in Ryoken's Lab™ on sunday... :woot:

now..

if I wasn't day sailin, and out SHARKIN' with the rig? worried about gaff hook scrapes?

YOU BETHCA! :woot:

I thought gelcoat had superior UV protection...that's why I asked...:dunno:

Uh ya, I owned a black gelcoat boat for about 5 years... Pure punishment.

Did it look awesome when it was all polished and waxed? SURE! Did it take hours upon hours of time to keep looking good? YES!

I would NOT do it again.

Here is an old picture of it:

yeah, you would think that, being boats and all.... :haha:

nope, it's it's hardness, durability and scratch resistance and that are it's plus's...

and people call me a masochist.... :haha:

the sad thing with gel is, it's always a losing battle.. :doah: the second you see an ounce of oxidation/chalking, it's too late... that is now dead gel... sure, it can compound up and look good for a bit... but it's dead and will come back quicker and quicker..

the only way to truly deal with it is to wetsand off that dead gel, rebuff and start over with a stoopidly religious wax regiment... I tell people all the time "the 2 lifebloods of a new boat are oil changes and wax"..... you can never wax too often on a newer boat... :doah: :haha:
