now here's how crazy I be.... :screwy::dunno:

as you can see in the last pic, the very corners of the dash have to be cut off to install it past the cage tubes...

once it's painted and I'm doing final detail type stuff to the rig..... it'll be time for

to make up some vinyl flaps that attach to the edge of the dash, than once in, fold out to cover the hole..

Damn Paul, you always amaze. Interesting take on "redoing my dash"

:D

can't say I've seen this approach before.... but that seems to be a common theme in this build... :doah: :haha:

hopefully I can have the metal work done by next sunday... :weld::grind:

No Surprise when you look at the rest of the work you do!!!

Your build deserves that extra attention to 1 off details..:waytogo:

Your previous work sets the bar very high for any of your future additions.:popcorn:

Hmmmm....

To my way of thinking it sounds like "you want what you want".

:D

Your only other choice would be to start cutting up the cage to make the a-pillars removeable somehow. That sounds crazier to me than an upholstered trim piece.

sure, I'll take some.. the only section of that that are missing at this point, are the very corners where the tube is....

BUT I will be chopping out most, if not all, a whole big window right behind the window for the plexi in the dashpad/cover to the right... there is some room between the 2 for the plexi holding frame, leds, etc... but I'm thinking it'll be vastly easier to work on/install/change inserts, with a giant window in that substructure too..

on looking at it yesterday tho, I'm not 100% on doing a full window unsupported... cuz that would fully separate the top of that structure, where the windshield area clips for the pad/cover slide in, and the bottom of the dash, where the front lower screws above the glovebox would be are..

it would still be attached over in the middle of the dash.. but the whole section to the right of that would be split... but, it may be fine without doing any bracing at all, I'll see... i'm actually running a full 2' of 2" x 1/4" steel along the lower glovebox door hinge line for the new hinge/kick panel gig.. so that beef may help too..

I have to see how flimsy it makes the whole thing, if that would also want/need/have to have structure support added to it, yada, might as well, blah, shoot me now, etc...

also, the plexi frame is gonna be a bit more challenging due to curves, tightness, etc... but I don't wanna cut out the dash for that till next weekend when I have the plexi "in hand" and I can verify EXACTLY where the metal edges of the dash around the plexi need to be.. than I can frame it from there...

I was thinking there was more than that missing with the way the console tubing goes up through there. I'll be interested in what you find out when you cut the window in the substructure. I'm thinking I'm going to have to cut a chunk out too.

here's how that outer dash sits to the inner support.. pretty damn close...

100_0387_zps989534dd.jpg

the tape section is what I'm gonna cut out... maybe even down another 1/2" on the bottom...

100_0388_zps11a91a17.jpg

and yeah, the only thing cut over by the console is the 2 actual ovals in the sheetmetal for the tubes.. and they are actually down pretty low, in the "showing" sheetmetal....

I hate having to build things in the wrong order..... more paint that'll need to be fixed/touched-up when it's all said and down over by that right tube.... the dash has also chewed up my A-pillar tubes a bit, they'll need some love too... :pimp:

here you can see how tight the top tube is to the clip slots.. I actually had to flatten out the clips that Jimmy sent me in a vise so they would fit between the tube and sheetmetal...

Cool. That's not bad for what I'm thinking about doing. I'll have to cut about that same section out but adding bracing won't be an issue for me. I think my biggest problem is going to be the kick-out on the lower section between the column and ashtray. I have a feeling it's going to have to come out and be smoothed across.

Are you going to have one plexi panel all the way across or break it up?

yeah, you can see that section in this shot for me...

100_0391_zpsc770db41.jpg

even with that tube running thru there, that section, when unbolted from the other side, is pretty darn flimsy... as you can see, I cut out a bunch of the structure around the bezel... and I also hacked out all the middle stuff and support rod to the firewall....

but once you screw my bezel in, and have that lower mid sheetmetal piece in place, it's fine...

THO, the one part that brings it the most support, is that little angle bracket missing in the pic, that goes over to the column drop.. you can see the other side has one...

and yes, it's missing... it's still in the land of the lost at this point, but hopefully it'll turn up before I make it my last "plea to the forum for stupid, non-LMC, lost by Ryoken, dungeon parts"... I swear! :haha:

one panel.. about 3" x 30"... almost the length of the original trim piece, just no curve end section by the door.

haven't picked a font yet for that BUILT, NOT BOUGHT engraving...

but in that hunt, I think I may have found a font I like for the side of the cowl hood....

COWL_zps103f8189.jpg

it's my pick for now until I hunt something cooler down... maybe our sign/decal guy down at the marina will have good font idea.. I'm just gonna have him print out satin black stickers for the hood..

oh, and those lower sections on mine do have additional strength in the 10 gauge lips I added for the panels to bolt to on each side.. they really stiffened it up in the middle...

funny thing is, it's actually from maybe my fave all time movie...

Terminator

but I think it might look good for that spot... obviously I should probably spend a few hr's checking fonts, but we'll see how that goes... :haha:

pic whoring, just cuz I know you'll dig it Paul.
