'87 Suburban Build "munepit" I'm Back! Missed all you guys!

Dang! Know what would actually be best for you is a late model frame as they are already fully boxed.

along those same lines, why not just build a full rectangle tube frame?

some 2x4 tube is pretty close to factory dimensions and is much stronger and probably easier than doing a frame straightening + boxing on top.

I don't have the skills or space to do that. I do have the skills and tools to add some plate to the frame though. I could some plate to add to the frame. Maybe get a frame strengthing kit from Kert to weld in there. I will also be adding a cage to it. I hate to add more weight though. I need to cut the body off behind the rear doors.

I think. I do have access to a bada$$ bender and notcher.

I just need the time. My 4 month old son is going to limit my time right now.

I'm going to get the frame fixed first then start strengthing it. The cage will be started in a couple months.

This would be a good start to a smaller rig.

Or this could be awesome!

Man you Cali guys are so spoiled with nice rigs. That k5 would go for almost 10 grand out here. :doah:

FWIW continuing to build trucks that start life as trucks is a lost cause. If you want to play like you're in a $100k trophy truck you have to start building something that starts out as a pile of tube.
There are many great options on the market to do so these days not to mention being patient and just buying a tube chassis used.

I'm not saying to junk your 'sub... I say fix it, box it and maybe do a simple cage but then keep it as a recreational wheeler and put your efforts into something that's going to hold up to the abuse you want to throw at it.

I have heard that same sentiment from virtually every person who has started wheeling with a "truck" and morphed it into a more and more capable truck, only to through the truck away and start with a pile of tube and wish they would have never bothered with the truck.

Although that may be true in the end I think it's good to start with a truck. You learn how to drive, turn wrenches and fabricate.

I hear you guys! That's not an option now. In a few years we will be moving to a bigger better house with a nice shop. Then I can do that!

But for now I need to fix this like you said.

My problem is I can't for the life of me not go big. I need to try and take it easy. But that's hard. I will work on that.

Thanks!

Few more pics. I think what happened is when it came down on the front passenger side, it pushed the shock mount up and thats where it bent. Wonder it it was braced to the other side that would have helped.

And, How in the hell did my tire rub the frame???

The frame hit the exhaust pipe.

And the shackle bolt hit the pipe here.

I truly don't think buggies are all that impressive anymore. Yes, nobody can doubt the performance advantages of having a buggy with perfect approach/departure angles, triangulated 4-linkes front and rear with 43" meats, ect. When they first started coming out I too was amazed at what they could do. But now I think they all just look the same and don't really do much for me. I actually think a well built "truck" like your's munepit is way more impressive to me now than buggies. It takes way more enginuity to build a truck to perform well than a stamped out buggy with link tabs and everything built into the chassies. That's why I think the changes to TTC this last year were awesome and I was way more excited to see each and every rig. That's just my $0.02

End hijack

Keep us updated on the direction you go :waytogo:

I just now got a re confirmation the frame shop is going to cost me zero dollars. Just a case of beer. I will bring them 2 cases though. I will also be bringing them pizza for their whole shop.

I need to put in a upper rad hose and see if I can drive it there or get it towed. I did do a couple donuts next to the stadium on sandy asphalt while moving it for the tow truck, so not really sure if it's drivable. Will find out this weekend.

My nuts are feeling better though. No more pain meds. I'm sure you all were worried and wondering! Kidding. There is still pain though. Like I got kicked in the nuts yesterday.

Glad the ballz is good.

Oh and the burb :haha:

damn man, i think if i ever did that kinda frame damage i'd pull all the drivetrain and throw it into a tacoma or something.

Once the Burb is totaled or to messed up to fix it I will do build something with a smaller body. I think though once I get the frame fixed and plated add a cage I should be good for awhile.

:waytogo:

I wouldn't expect any less of you Jeff....you've been entertaining for sure!

Oh and boxed and caged front to back FTW! And the snowball starts rolling!

Thanks for the offer. Right now it's an hr here and an hr there. I need to send my wife and kids out of town to get 2 solid days of wrenching.

So I Just got home from work. Took off early. And find this in my rig.

She calls is the Burbin.

Then, while taking this picture, I feel something on the floorboard.

I see this bump in the carpet.

I pull back the carpet and find this.:doah:

Right in the middle where you put your feet. Guess it was a really hard hit.

I don't think there is supposed to be a crease there.
