87K506 Build thread

If you thought that was bad just wait tell you try an LS motor swap. Oh but I will have a list on how to do that when I'm done.

I've been doing alot of research on the LS swap. Only thing I haven't figured out (in my head of course) is what to do about AC controls on the newer gen IV motors, i.e LS3, L92, etc. since evidently the AC input is part of the CAN BUS and not just a signal wire to the PCM.

The guy wiring mine say it's no big deal. So I will let you know how it is when I get to that. From what I found I will probably use the kit from Novack for my AC. So it my just hookup like normal. I don't see why it should be a big deal all the inside controls should work like normal just have to get compressor to come on and off.

Yep thats pertty much the only issue. But I have read that if the computer doesn't know if the comrpessor is going to come on, it can cause some stumbling at idle. Probably not a huge deal, but I could see it becoming an issue with a cam with a decent size LSA

Redoing my hardtop. Got it knocked down, filled in some problem areas, and primed it this past weekend. Hopefully I get it blocked out and shoot color this weekend. All my weatherstripping from Classic Parts should be on the way, so hopefully by Sunday evening-ish it will be sitting on the K5.

I'll try to get some pics, I was just rushed. I'm only able to work on it on the weekends, and I have to drive about 2.5-3 hours one way to go work on it, so I spend most of my time actually working and very little time snapping pictures.

Also, traded some old TSL's I have had sitting around taking up room for front fenders, side windows, and cash. Made room in the shop, got parts I needed, and cash to cover painting my hardtop.

I will be taking the fenders, lengthing the wheel wells about 1.5-2" and grafting in a filler panel. When its all said and done, it will look like uncut stock fenders except they won't rub at full stuff, lock to lock with 35x12.50s on 15x10s.

Bump?

I still own this thing and it's spent the past 10ish years under a cover as I had drastic life changes, job changes, etc. But I have built a shop and business in Colorado and finally feel like I have the skillset and tooling to build this like I want. I now have a shop equipped with a cnc table (plasma/router/engraver/tube notcher), tube bender, notcher, tig/mig welder, sheet metal tools, large fixture table, almost every handtool imaginable, sandblasting and powdercoating capabilities, CAD proficiency, plus numerous other things. I have gotten involved in the UTV industry and over the past 5 years, I've been involved in Ultra4 racing in some shape or form, currently co-driving for 2 teams and enjoying the heck out of it. Here's a small snapshot!

Racecar I built for a good friend. We placed 15th at KOH last year, 2nd in our class, and took the stock-class national championship and west coast championship in it.

Current UTV I help prep and co-drive in (280hp Can Am... It's a blast!)

Few tig welds. I took up tig welding and beat my head against the wall but was adamant I was going to learn how to do it... Made pretty decent progress over the past 2 years

Lot more to it, but like most of you know, life gets in the way of these projects. I've had some changes in my family (mom passed away, I had a son who is turning out to be a gearhead, my dad is getting older) that has really put this on the priority list to work on, enjoy, etc. It'll be a good project for me to spend time with my son and my dad and go out and wheel/camp out of.

TLDR: Life got in the way, but I'll be reviving this project at the end of summer/early fall to work on. Does anyone even use forums any more? :rotfl:
