88 K5 Build Thread - 4BTA Cummins Swap - 05/18 Dory is delivered to Alaska!!

Can you hear the turbo?:D

That is the most important?

And does it smoke black also important?

You can hear it when you are passively driving, but its really noticeable when you get in the 2200 rpm range (which is actually close to the normal red line for this engine). It doesn't do a ton of black smoke but it could easily with the turn of a screw in the fuel pump. It increases power but I don't want to screw up my emissions for AK. I hear they are pretty serious about it there.

Loud and loud:D Honest, this is a pretty loud engine. Louder then the 6bt. There needs to be some sound deadening done to make it a daily driver. When I drive it around like it is it sounds like a delivery truck or something.

Thanks, that is good to know. I haven't decided what to put my 4BTA into yet, but whatever it is I will be using a lot of insulation. I wonder where most of the noise eminates from, injectors? valve train?

I've read that the majority of the noise comes from the valve covers and the oil pan. The reason is that those are the only thin metal parts of the engine. They say that if you sound deaden those actual parts plus your cab it will make a huge difference. I was reading one guys pOst somewhere and he was trying to get his title changed from gas to diesel and his state required a sound lvl check and they wouldnt pass his 4bt because of the noise. He said he sound deadened those areas and he passed.

I'm sorry to point this out but this just sounds funny to me, it's basically saying, "if you just sound deaden those two parts, (oh, and plus your entire cab), then it will help reduce the sound." That's all you got to do? So which does more, sound deading those two parts, or only the whole cab? :haha: :waytogo:

Excellent work by the way, keep it up. It's a lot more work to swap in something that never came in these rigs.

Sorry about the lack of updates but I have been living in a hotel and getting my house junk moved to Juneau.

On April 1st my truck was dropped off for shipment. On the way there I found out that fuel gauge is not actually working--doh. This maters because it was a little over a quarter of a tank and when you ship a car it can't be over 1/4 full apparently. I ended up having to go a shop and get the tank drained and refilled with 4 gallons. When I got to the shop they were in shock and awe when they opended the hood. Probably was there for 30 mins while I answered thier questions. They liked it so much they didn't even charge me. I gave $20 any way and told them to order a pizza. The same thing pretty much happened at the shipping location. Anyway it ended up being a pretty fun day.

I shot some video of the drive there. The speedo is not accurate because of the tires and differnt gearing but my gps said I went about 65 at top speed. The two wing windows are open and the truck has no sound deadener anywhere to give an idea of the sound when driving at high speeds.

Lol, yep that's all you need to do!!! Obviously this is my first one so I don't know for sure bit from what I have read sound deadening those two areas on the engine makes a big difference but if you also deaden the cab the engine will sound like your typical diesel truck. Guess I'll find out if it's true or not soon enough.

Thanks for the compliments. Means alot after looking at your insane front suspension mods.

Dang! Finish it up and hit the highway! Nice man! Glad to see things with the truck are working out well!

This is such an impressive build... :thumb:

Thanks man :)

Shipped?!? i thought you were going to drive it up there?

Nope, shipping was the plan from the get go. Maybe if I had more time to get the bugs out. Even then though 4500 miles is a long way to drive such a big truck especially when I have another vehicle that gets better gas millage. We are on our way there now. Currently in Texas and should arrive around the 15th of may. We are making a vacation out of it Amd stopping at places on the way.

Man that thing is the epitomy of SICK!!!! (may not be the correct usage of grammer but WHO GIVES A $HIT!!! lol)

Those are def my favorite kind of diesel, I dont like dodges, but man did they make some nice diesel engines. My buddys 97 5.9 12valve has like 300000 on it and still runs fantastic. And I love the sound of his turbo.
