'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
In fact, a tweeker would steal your truck, drive it around as his for a few weeks, fix a couple things on it, and then get busted. And you'd get your truck back mostly intact, save for that one thing that would make you ask "why did he take that?"
We had someone cut the fence and break into the power company yard in Moab once(tons of wire and trucks with keys in them and everything) and all they could find missing was one chainsaw. Must have been a tweeker that just needed to cut some firewood.

Back to the oiling system work I did. Oil pressure is where I like it, about 12psi at idle and about 45psi at 2000 RPM. Traffic and construction kept me from seeing if I still had the pressure drop off at 3500RPM.

In reading about rear main seal installations, I don't think I put any RTV in these areas.View attachment 270508

I did find that I did NOT put RTV in the areas highlighted above. I DID this time.

Also didn't see the groove/wear in the crank at the rear main seal lip like the earlier picture. It was either dirt/sludge of sorts or it just isn't noticeable at a different angle. I didn't feel anything with my fingernail either.

After the comments about how bad my old 350 bearing looked, I was scared the 454 bearing was going to show bad signs of wear. Luckily it did not. Look just the same as when I put the motor in.

I was not able to use the factory dipstick. I would have needed to remove more from the windage tray because the factory tube inserts almost the full length of the dipstick. The aftermarket dipstick tubes leave the bottom 2" or 3" of the dipstick exposed. The dipstick I used was Lokar, and it worked very nicely.

Remember I don't idle mine like a maniac, it's only idling at 550RPM.

And it may be closer to 15psi because it's a little past the halfway mark between 0 & 25.

And all the TBI units idle at 800 and 20 psi for a reason

I can't think of a vehicle I've owned that idled over 600RPM from the factory. I know that's what the company pickup idles at.

I'm thinking I might need to idle it down to 450RPM.

One other source to get the truck weight from is a landscaping business. You know, one that sells rocks, gravel and the like. That's where I got mine weighed.

My TBI idled at 550, that's where I got that target number from.
I wish I could get my Fitch on my sbc to idle below 750rpm, on that not I think my big block L18 8.1L only has 6psi at idle or something ridiculous like that so I'd think 12 is ok

I finally installed the mirrors I bought off of @nvrenuf

I know there are many that don't like those. They are power mirrors that were only available on the '91 squares. I'm not using the power feature. I wanted them for a couple reasons. I picked up some re-pop mirrors a couple of years ago and they suck. They won't stay put; running highway speed pushes them in. I have to use the mirrors a lot offroading in this truck and it's a pain to get them adjusted after every time they hit a tree. Now you just pop them back out and they are good.

They don't use the same mounting holes. I did use one, the upper hole closest to the engine. Then drilled the other 2 holes from there and used rivet nuts.

Very interested to see how they work out.

I also found the culprits for the last bit of body damage, and it was not the tree root after all......
