'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
nice simple easy to learn video on cable loop ends . and same basic for line spliceing also if you have a way to cut the cable clean .

and the guy who plays with BIG cable all day long . . .

Watching the second video with the larger cable actually makes it easier to understand what's going on in the first video.

Did you go from a 52 to 56 rear springs? Whats the specs?
Old and new springs are 56". I did flip them around when I set it up with the new bed. Originally I had hoped to put in 60" springs but I ended up not having room to move the flip brackets back.

Aside from that, Stephen and Jesse at ORD just asked me a bunch of questions and had me verify some measurements. I had the rear axle weight from the Cat Scales to help out as well.

I will be installing the air bags as well.

When I ordered the C10 engine and the 454 cam, they were supposed to come at different times. But they ended up here at the same time. Mostly because the motor took about 4 months.

Back one in and pull the other one in nose to nose. Should be most of the same tools for both jobs. Rip and tear and git er done!

I'm more of a slow methodical type. The kind that overthinks things. We even had a term for it in the navy because us nuclear guys were notorious for it. The common phrase was "don't nuke it out!".

Got a new winch for my birthday!

It gave me a little bit of concern when I noticed a discrepancy. Above you'll see a "12" on the gear box cover. Now look at the sticker on the motor cover.

I was worried they had put a 8K motor on the 12K winch. So I pulled the motor off and it's the correct one.

And of course it's not a straight bolt-in. Biggest issue is the beefier drum supports and the fancy motor/gear box covers. I had to remove gussets. Figured out the Ryobi batteries at home suck so it took forever to use the angle grinder to cut the gussets off and grind down. On top of that we lost electricity twice thru the day Sunday which really set me back keeping batteries charge up for the cutting and grinding.

Finally got the gussets out of the way and still couldn't bolt the new winch in. The mounting bolts are 10mm which is just enough larger than 3/8" that I couldn't get all 4 started. Unfortunately I don't have a drill bit between 3/8" and 1/2" at home. So, I still don't have a winch in the truck yet. :doah:

Very nice! :pimp:

It's also refreshing to see a nice winch vs the (now) typical chinese disposable stuff. :thumb:

Edit: Happy Birthday!

Thank you!

Technically it is a made in China winch. The VR series is Warn's value line. The Tabor I had before that was too. But there is value in that they are still made to Warn's standards. Good stuff can come from Chinese factories if companies do their due diligence and keep up with quality control.

It is definitely a better winch than the old Tabor. As I mentioned the drum support plates are beefier. I like the sturdier tie plate similar to the one I put on the old winch. The biggest problem I've had with winches is the tie rods busting out of the drum support plates. It will be much more difficult to do that with this winch. They come standard with the Albright contactor I had converted the old winch to. It has IP68 waterproof rating, but I don't plan on submerging my winch anytime soon. The EVO motor draws lower amps, but does give up a little power as the number of wraps on the drum go up. One of the coolest things is the controller can be used direct wired or wirelessly. It runs off a AAA battery, so it's easy to replace that if needed.

You inspired me to do a search for winches on Amazon. Holy crap there are a lot and some funny names too. Here are my top choices:
  1. AC-DK
  2. Pismire
  3. Zeak
  4. Rock-Hulk
  5. Stegodon
  6. Mnemosyne
:haha: There are probably that many more brands that are less humorous, like JCS. I also didn't know Rough Country has a winch.
