'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
Haven't seen one of these before.

It was on an '86 crew cab. I've heard of this name but I thought it meant no backseat. However this truck had a rear seat.

Never mind. A quick Google search had my answer. Looks like they go for about $25 +shipping. Not too bad!

It does. Someone probably added one later.

Ah man I have been looking for a set of those

I should be able to pull them. They are at the local pick n pull. Was thinking about getting them myself since I technically have a 2+3. But I'm not that gungho about keeping them.

Yeah armysurpluswarehouse.com. They are a good sized box and should hold several things.

I don't remember if I've mentioned it much, but I've had some cooling problems with this truck since we bought it. I did do a little write-up on swapping out the radiator and install a Volvo fan. Even after that I was still getting overheating on long pulls up steeper grades. Driving over I70 to Blazer Bash and back we had to pull over a couple of times.

After talking with Wade I decided maybe it was an issue with my fans shroud blocking too much radiator for airflow on the highway. I decided to go to the extreme and just run the electric fan with no shroud.

It works great on the highway. The engine temp goes up but not over 220° on a 95° day pulling a long steep grade on the interstate. Plus we had about 500lbs of camping gear in the back.

Only did a little bit of trail running so I would like to do a little more testing there, but what I did do the fan was able to keep up with. I think the best scenario might be a dual fan setup so that shroud is more open with the highway airflow being able to pass through both fan openings. But then you have 2 fans to pull air on the trail at slow speeds.

Some pictures from the trip:

Loaded up for camping.

Now I have a new problem to fix. Seems as though my steering box has given up the ghost. There is some resistance when you first start to turn the steering wheel, then all of a sudden it will move freely. By that point you've started trying to turn the steering wheel more to overcome the resistance and you have to quickly correct. Makes for some fun driving. Definitely requires 2 hands on the wheel and concentration.

Still have good pressure to the hydroboost and the brakes work fine. No new noises out of the pump. Checked out all of the external stuff while someone turned the steering wheel back and forth; don't see any binding.

Based on some threads I searched out here on CK5, it sounds like a steering box issue. This is the original steering box from my 84 CUCV K5 so it has seen a lot of service.

So it turns out the problem that I thought was my steering gear box was in fact my ram; it's bent.

You can see where the ram hit the engine cross member. I think the suspension settled after a few hundred miles reducing my clearance. To top that off, I never installed bump stops. Lesson learned.

So I've got 2.5" of clearance.

Which sucks because the ORD springs will allow 5" of up travel. So I'm going to be installing bump stops. We're planning an LS swap in a year or so and I'm hoping I can make an engine cross member at that point that will give me clearance.

I tell you, in retrospect I'm not sure I would do high-steer again. It sure has created a lot of issues.

Look at the old pictures, the springs have definitely settled an inch. Which I should have anticipated.

is the body of the cylinder ok? I bent the rod on my old assist cylinder and a local machine shop made me a new one for like $50.

It's a PSC ram, you can send it back to them and have them put a new rod or possibly just have them ship you a new one and install it yourself.

I haven't followed your thread, do you have upgraded knuckles to go with that high steer? If not I would be looking to get some soon.

Yeah I did put Reid knuckles on but that was back when the axle was in the K5 so it's not really mentioned in this thread.

I will definitely look in to getting a new rod. It must have bent when it was fully extended because it seems like the bend must be just inside the cap. When the ram is full extended the rod is straight but angled up. If that makes sense. You can kinda see it here with it half extended:

The body of the ram seems fine. Mostly just scraped up the sticker and the paint finish.

It's jammed up good can't even budge the rod with my 280lbs leaning on it. The only way it would move in the truck is with the motor running. I was able to torque the pitman nut to 184ft-lbs without the steering moving and the tires were off the ground.

Likely hurt the cylinder too, a bent rod can pull the piston sideways and score the cylinder. Stuck that bad makes it pretty likely.

This was mine. I checked with PSC and seemed like it was about the same price as the machine shop plus shipping and time for a new rod from them vs new rod threaded in a few hours at the machine shop. I put it back together and ran it for another year or so before switching to full hydraulic steering.
