'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
I really like that skid plate. That is similar to what I am going to build to protect my SYE241 (gotta protect those aluminum cases right :waytogo:). But looking at yours has given me some ideas.

I know how you feel. I have been saying for over a year now that I am going to build a new crossmember/skid plate and just have not gotten around to it.

Looks good Scott!

Thanks. It is easier to do with the straight crew cab frame. I remember the K5 frame being more difficult but that may have been my fault.

Put in about 1015 miles over the past 5 days, 428 miles just today. Very happy to say we made it to and from Blazer Bash with 1 minor issue.
We had to do a trail repair on my bump stop landing pads. The welds to the spring plate broke. Our shop welder was failing and I knew they didn't penetrate for crap but they'd held up to one trail run so I thought they were good enough. One broke off on the first trail run and the other on the second.

While we were running Fins n Things Brent pulled or his Ready Welder and hooked it to my 2 batteries. He welded up the bump pads and they are on there good now. Was even able to start the truck after. Makes me think hard on getting a Ready Welder myself.

Even made it to the top of the world!

I have dug through this thread a time or two and wanted to ask a few things i may have missed.

1. What load range are your tires and how do you like them?
2. Do you have any more pics of how you modified the B52's?
3. Have you noticed any problems with the change to the B52's?

Killer truck, and Thank.

1. D. I have no complaints with the tires. They've worked fine on the trails I've had them on. Run good on the pavement as well.

2. All pictures I have are here: http://s5.photobucket.com/user/MrK5/library/89 Chevy Crew Cab/Front suspension-axle

3. Didn't notice a change as far as handling.

Thanks for the compliment.

Random off the wall question. What does your radio look like (if it still has an uncut dash)?

Martin

No radio. It's all run through my phone. I believe the hole in the dash is unaltered if that's what you mean. The factory, plastic bezel is not in the truck. I'm just running with the bare metal skeleton of the dash for now.

I was just curious if ALL 1989-1991 R/V's had the din and a half radio, or if the crew cabs stuck with the old knob radio. Seeing as the crew cabs didn't get the newer trim, or steering wheel. I am always curious about different factory things, sorry.

Martin

It's definitely a larger din and a half opening in the metal part of the dash. Not sure how the plastic bezel was from the factory as the previous owner had cut it all to hell.

Hey Scott, just noticed in this picture you didn't do anything to the top rubber isolator. I would run a bolt through it to hold the shaft from twisting. They can be kinda worn by the time we get them. I've normally opted to weld the tube, jumping over the rubber, to the outside "coupler" of sorts.

Sometimes folks still complain about slop and it's always 2 possibilities. 1)the two halves need set screws or 2) the top rubber is broken

My '91 has the din and a half and the bezel has the large opening. I had to make a filler plate to mount my standard din head unit.
