'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
I know a lot of people like the xj shaft but I didn't like it. Maybe Nick didn't do something right when he set this xj shaft up to begin with. I just felt better putting a new part made in the USA.
 
It may be a little short. There is more shaft on this PSC box versus the factory box I looked at. There is 3/4" of spline on the ujoint and the box has 3/4" followed by about 1/4" of a groove around the entire stub and then another 1/4" of splines. I will probably try to get it a little further when I rotate it.
 
Awhile back I downloaded a PDF copy of the service/repair manual for this truck. One of the things I frequently look for is torque spec. Because the manual is a scanned copy you can't easily search through the nearly 1800 pages. So I made a compilation of the different torque tables in the book. I attached a copy in case anyone is interested.

Got the steering wheel lined up properly. Also slid the shaft further onto the steering box splines.



Replaced the busted door handle on the rear door.



Pulled the donor of my old K5 and I thought that was pretty hard. Taking the handle off the rear door was 100 times worse!

Here's what my arm looked like after:

Not sure if the bandaid is visible on my thumb but that bled terribly.

The rear door has very little room to work in but I finally got it done.

I will say after having a rig with an xj shaft and one with a borgeson (on the trk when I bought it) I noticed a difference in the wheel feel between the 2. For $40 it's hard to beat the xj, but when I was doing 75 down the highway on 40s I appreciated the stupid firm stability of the Borg.

Let us know when the golf ball wrap happens. I think that'll be awesome.
 
I'd like to do a wrap to "seal" the paint on the truck. Previous owner painted it with rattle can flat white paint and I bleeds down the truck. I couldn't figure out why the back window kept getting these white streaks and I realized it's the paint from the roof of the cab.

Anytime there's moisture it runs off the roof and down the window pulling some white residue with it.

That's kinda what it acts like but I think it's just the UV attacking the paint.

Borrowed some 40's from a buddy and went up to cut down our Christmas tree.



As bad arse as 40's are they are a little too big for this truck. I have some "new" 37's to put on but I want to try the 40's on our next snow bashing run first.

They're a really tough nice tire so actually no worries but as you've heard I get blamed for all of the tires that don't keep the air in them.:dunno: I'm not sure why?
 
I think I am in love! I have always like the "low w/ big tires" look! I am going to run 40's on my CC when I get around to replacing the current tires, how much suspension lift do you figure you have?

About 5", maybe a touch more. 4" springs and the conversion from 2wd added an 1" or more. The truck the 40's came off has 4" (wore out a little) and I have more room over the tire.

If I kept the 40's I would need to move up the 5.3L swap priority to #1. And coincidentally 40" tires cost more than a 5.3L swap....

Glad to hear that! I believe I have around 3ish" of lift and i'm really wanting to run 40's or 41's. I really like the lift to tire size ratio of your truck with the 40's. What load range were those and did you notice any difference in ride?
When i go to 40's i would like to keep a D or E range tire but, i don't want to run a 20" rim so that limits the options.
 
Not sure on the load range, will have to try and remember to look at the tires.

If you have a bed on the truck you'll definitely have to open up the rear fender openings for 40" tires.

On my buddy's truck that the 40's belong to we had to cut the front fenders all the way back to the firewall of the cab. Plus we had to hammer flat the flange the inner fender would normally bolt to on the firewall/floorboard area. That's with his 4" lift; plus he has 1" zero-rate with the axle moved forward 1".
