'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
On the last trail run the hi-lift jack jumped out of its mount. I was using a Hi-Lift bracket setup that I pulled out of the K5 and it had always worked fine. The first pic is the clamp that is bolted down and locked.

The base end bracket has a tang that sticks out for one of the holes to slip over.

The bracket for the base is the problem.

I used a piece of 6" aluminum channel to make a new bracket that will hold the base more securely. I drilled and threaded a hole for a 3/8" bolt and threaded it in with Loctite to hold it in place.

And a wing nut to keep it in place.

First, thanks to Chris for hooking me up with replacement plug wires. I just replaced the damaged wire so I have 7 black plug wires and 1 red. :D

Damn, cost me $450 to replace that rear shaft. I need to start hording crew cab rear drive shafts. I can't be shelling out that kind of money every time I ding up a shaft. Although this was the first time it's happened and it is one of the harder CO trails. It was pretty beat up.

i wasn't able to move the carrier bearing back at this point. It's going to require more work than I expected and it's too close to Blazer Bash. Just gonna know my limits. This was my first problem in 3yrs of wheeling this truck.

I also had my 2nd Radioshack CB fail on the last trail run. Picked up a Uniden 510xl that's highly touted as a sturdy, reliable unit. Moved the CB to the roof. I like it there. Makes using the mic easier.

So between the drive shaft, CB, and spark plug issue; that last trail run cost me over $500 to recover. :eek1:

I'm starting to think whoever painted this truck white might have used latex paint. The hood will start getting what looks like black mold spots or something. Since I stare at the hood anytime I'm in the truck I decided to cover it with vinyl. I added a sticker to the center that only cool kids from the 80's will understand....

take a look at these whenever it's stripping time...

I have been using the 3m velcro backed version of those on my crew cab and they do work good. Rip the paint off quick and don't hurt the metal.

Definitely gonna have to strip if I ever want to paint it with real paint.

Well, the upside is the truck keeps driving better and better. This past weekend on our wheeling trip the ignition module failed. Ran the trail fine except the CB developed some interference. On the way to the second trail it started missing on me, then when I slowed down for a turn the truck died and wouldn't restart. We let it cool and it barely restarted but allowed us to drive it to Wade's rig.

Wade had a spare module. Threw that in and the truck started right up. Ran fine on the 4hr drive home and the trail we ran on the way. Oh and the CB interference went away with the new ignition module.

Up side is after fixing the timing, removing the one spark plug non-fouler, and now replacing the ignition module; the truck is running MUCH better. The drive we made this weekend I've done several times in this truck so I have a really good reference. I was amazed how much better it did this weekend.

Since I don't have ignition module replacement pics, Here's one of my new favorites:

One of the guys with us is from Virginia and this was his first trip "deep" into the mountains and he had a blast.

I wanted a little more storage in the cab and I saw this Smittybilt overhead console for Jeeps. I adapted it to work in the truck by making my own aluminum mounting bracket.

They have a coyote tan color. New they are $150 but you can find them cheaper on ebay. There was a guy selling a tan one for $90. I think it only had 4 of the 6 pouches included from Smittybilt. It uses the MOLE system so you can find pouches at a surplus store.

It would be easier to mount with a roll cage I think. The base "wrap" with the MOLE setup is 34" long.

I was thinking later, I wonder if there's a place you can find pieces of MOLE fabric you can use to make this entirely at home.

I wish I had taken pictures of my buddy's rig. He has one of those silly cowboy hat holders, and he keeps a hat in it, and then throw stuff in the hat.....

You could go to the army surplus store and get one of those boonie hats for the tactical look. Haha!

I've been having intermittent trouble with my passenger hub not engaging. Pulled it apart and found this:

Broken spring that pushes the inner gear out engage the hub. Luckily I have a replacement you see in the background. I am curious why it broke tho.
