'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
No, it's just anticlimactic. I'm losing the swing-down tire carrier and going with a tailgate. Gonna have to modify the bumper or make a new one. Still thinking on how I want to mount the spare. For now it can just be laid down and strapped in the bed.

I've yet to have a genius idea for my spare either. Interesting to see what you do

From what I know on this, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, there is really only one version that has the small tunnel; the 2wd auto's. If its a 2wd manual, or any 4wd auto or manual, then they have the larger tunnel and don't have clearance issues with really any tranny swap (unless going with newer Allison or ZF-6 tranny's, just cause those things are freaking huge). Putting a 1" body lift on a 2wd would to me look goofy (unless I'm not understanding your statement above). In Scott's case it probably wouldn't have been a big deal cause he converted to 4wd

I`m scraping a 79 c10 right now with a 465 trans... while it has a bolt in tall cover for the trans it is not long enough to work with a 4x4 swap. The 4x4 tunnel will travel all the way to just under the seat.

I have a2wd 83c10 manual 3 on the tree with small trans tunnel.

You will need to find a 4x4 tunnel...and make sure to get one for the transfer case you want to use. 205 and 208/ 241 are in different spots.
Also on the newer 4x4 cabs" 81 plus "the trans tunnel will not un bolt as is the case with the 2 wheel drive trucks of any year " In a automatic equipped truck"

The work you have done on your 2-wheel drive crew cab (now 4-wheel) is amazing. I have done few builds in my day, mostly just bolt-on's, but not nearly as much custom fabrication as you have done with your truck. I am glad my crew cab was already a 4X4 because I do not think I would have had the motivation to make one like you did.

Thanks! I look back and think that it would be hard to do it all over again.

I thought I would want to but I can't think of a time when I've drug the rear off anything. The bed was not in good shape to begin with and after beating it up on the snowmaggedon run, I plan to replace in the future. It will be some sort of fabricated bed and I think I will drop 12" or so off the rear when I do that.

Working on modifying the rear bumper to fit with the tailgate. Had to take 2" off the top. And I've been cutting a bunch of holes in the bumpers.

Haha, I knew someone would guess it. I wanted to weld in panels to replace the factory tails but my wife wants me to keep them. However we both agree the older trucks can use a boost to taillight/brake visibility. Plus this way when I break out a taillight, I can pull the bulb and still have lights.

When I finally get around to building bumpers I'm gonna do the same.

I put filler panels in my 73 and then put in oval led trailer lights and a small marker light on the side to be legal.

If I have lights in the bumper I can still drive around while changing out the body lights to that

I thought the look of the Poco Loco at blazer bash (blue blazer...I think he's from NM if I remember right...pretty sure you know him) with the filled in panels with the stickers that still make it look like the tail light was an awesome idea. Still has the classic look, but you don't have to worry about busting them off. Maybe you can convince your wife to let you do that

I tried talking her into that but I don't think she was buying. Yes the K5 you are talking about is @DickeysK5 from NM.

Lights are mounted:

Since it's 3/16" steel I threaded the holes straight into the bumper. You will notice there are some gaps. I'm going to make bezels around the lights to "pretty" up the holes.

Next step is paint and then I can wire up the lights. I'm cheating with the LED taillight wiring. I got another one of the wiring harness adapters you use for trailer wiring; the type that plugs into the factory harness. It'll be piggybacked with the one I already have for the trailer plug.
