'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
Wow, I'm amazed at how much you have to to modify for the headers. I'm using ORD motor mounts, I would have thought all mounts (regardless of design or manufacturer) are designed to sit at the same height as OE... I guess not.

Looks good and I like how tight those manifolds are to the block.
Yeah, that's what I like about them too and I thought they wouldn't need as much mods as the passenger side did. The transmission clearance surprises me most.

I didn't remember you having to make as many changes as I did. Only difference might be the 2wd vs 4wd. I did figure out the hard way that the motor mounts are different. the 2wd are a littler "flatter", for lack of a better word. 2wd 350 mounts, maybe true 454 mounts are different. But like you say, it seems like they would sit the same in the frame regardless.

And that still wouldn't change how the headers line up with the trans, a 700r4 in this case. :dunno:

I'm not upset about it, just wasn't expecting. Still happy with the quality of the headers. The coating is really good. I was worried about messing them up with we were test fitting but the coating held up really well.

Hey! I don't see any A/C stuff in there!!!!!!
Hopefully next year. I really want to do a Vintage Air but it'll cost a good chunk 'o change. Kinda need to wait and see if I have to buy a transmission....

So motor mounts were a bit of a challenge. I wanted to use polyurethane inserts. This was one of those items that sometimes fell into the hazy zone with the 87-91 square body/new body overlap.

I have what is sometimes referred to as "4-bolt" motor mounts like below.

The number of holes is referring to the number of bolts used to mount it on the frame bracket.

The problem is Energy Suspension lists the same insert for a 1989 C3500 and R3500. I guess in their mind the 2wd trucks are the same. However they do not use the same motor mounts. Luckily I figured it out because the install instructions showed a 3-hole type mount and things weren't lining up right. Below is the 3-hole type.

These are the 2 different inserts:

The correct inserts for my application, 1989 R3500 with 5.7L, is part number 31116R (G if you want black). The correct inserts are a little "flatter" and the metal tabs line up in the brackets a little differently.

Hopefully this might help someone in the future.

I was a little worried about the cross tie for the shock hoops not clearing the motor, but it's about perfect.

I should have thought ahead and put the distributor in the advanced location before making up the wires. It will work okay, just not as nicely as I first had them. I think I can fix this when I drop in the locked out distributor later down the road.

Got this bolted on.

and the ROMEX note was funny, never seen that one!

I have, my aunt has an 84 K20 that was bought at a farm sale. It had Romex and conduit ran into a light switch in the cab. then to an actual outlet in the back to supply power to a fuel tank on a diesel barrel. Quality work:rolleyes:

Scott, honestly, how come you aren't using some ORD or DIY motor mounts? Are they just not BB friendly or something?

Was that a cheap shot at @skunked ?

at a PO of my rig for sure.

edit and the C10, holly shit is that thing a mess!
A cheap shot at all sketchy previous owners everywhere.

After it was all said and done I was thinking myself that I should have. It was kind of a slippery slope thing. First mistake was I thought $26 paid for TWO inserts. Then I realized it was only ONE. :doah: Then I got wrapped up in figuring out the correct insert, doing a couple of returns in the process.

So yeah, I should have just done one of theirs to begin with. :doah: :rotfl:
