'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
It did give me an excuse to buy a new tool to make the 2nd time around easier. Plus now I know what I need to do so it will be a little quicker.

Found the problem looking down the receptacle for the dipstick tube:

Doesn't show up well in the picture but you can kinda see where I've made the gold iridite finish of the windage tray silver from bumping into it repeatedly.

I looked in through the drain plug first, but it was hard to get the camera lined up where it needed to be. I could see through the hole in the oil pan baffle that it looked like it was blocked.

It's kinda frustrating trying to maneuver the camera. I kept trying to angle the the screen in my hand like that would change my perspective. :haha: Half the time you have to move the camera lead in the opposite direction you want it to go and then you start getting confused about up and down.
That first pic looks kind of dirty. Haha

Scott hurry up and get this done. Is just an oil pan
The oil pan isn't the issue, it's all the things to get to it. Have to remove the exhaust, engine crossmember, and trans dust cover. Very glad I did the v-band clamps in the exhaust and the ORD engine crossmember.

The oil pan is a little time consuming because it takes at least half a dozen passes to get the bolts all tight with the one-piece gasket as it compresses.

Here's the mark where the dipstick tube was hitting.

Obviously the Moroso and Milodon stuff doesn't line up. Gee who woulda thought.

I trimmed the windage tray like so:

And now I have a functioning dipstick!

Fired it up and I have good oil pressure. No immediate catastrophic leaks at least. It was hot in the shop, so I left the truck to sit and ate some ice cream.

I gained some weight....

I figured you would loose a little bit by cutting out that chunk from the windage tray.

Good to know the weight though. That's a heavy beast.

:haha:

I’m trying to wrap my head around this math. The old K5 on tons with all iron everything and some cage weighed 2800 less. That’s a stripped down ‘68 Camaro worth difference. Ponder that

Mine was near 6500 loaded with two big dudes and gear for the desert trip.

I'm starting to think they might add 1000lbs. These are certified scales that will pay an overnight ticket if a truck that weighed there gets popped. An extra 1000lbs on a 40,000lbs+ rig wouldn't be a big deal. These scales are there to help prevent an overweight ticket, not figure out how much product someone should be billed for.

Plus the lady told me a couple guys tried to weigh a popup camper on the scales and it wouldn't register. A scale that gives weight in 10lbs increments should be able to register a 1000lb trailer.

At least the weight difference makes some sense. I had about half a tank more fuel this time which accounts for about 50lbs.

I've never heard of a scale that was purposely set wrong, but 8100 lbs seems ridiculously high. I'd be interested to see if you could find another scale to use and compare.
