'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
I was wrong, you can still get the dual sync. It's just a different design.

And cheaper now of course

For ease of repairs, I wanted to haul the crew cab down to our shop. I've always been curious if I could successfully load it on our 18ft equipment trailer. Well it does fit with little room to spare.

I'm pretty sure everything was maxed out capacity as far as payload, especially if the crew cab really weighs 8000lbs. The company truck is a 6.0L 2500HD and it almost felt like a case of the tail wagging the dog. It would be a tough load to haul thru the mountains, but at least I know it can be hauled if ever needed.

Haven't done much with the actual repair work, but I think I did verify the source of my lack of spark.

Never a good sign when electronics are leaking stuff out and bulging.

The wires were covered in the cheap convoluted loom and neither it nor the wires themselves show any sign of being too hot. These are pretty small gauge wires, so I don't think some sort of over-current could happen without the wires showing evidence. I think this was a straight up failure of the coil driver.

Been there, done that with my crew cab and my 18 ft car hauler when we moved from CO to ID...and also imagine that crew cab filled to the brim in the cab and bed with all sorts of crap for the move. I was pretty nervous about it as I knew the crew cab on there by itself was maxing out the trailer, let alone all the other crap. We made the trip safely...after blowing 3 trailer tires :rotfl:. Let's just say it was outta necessity I towed it like that...but I don't want to do that again

Well at least you found what appears to be the problem.
Definitely A problem at least, and hopefully it is THE problem. :haha: Trying not to be too optimistic. Hope for the best, plan for the worst. :doah:

Yeah, the suspension on the trailer was creaking and popping driving around the corners.

I'm doubling down on the Sniper and replacing the coil driver with this:

Reasons I chose it:
  • Connects easily to the Sniper EFI
  • 135MJ output like the MSD 6 boxes but for less $$$
  • LED indicator that shows: ignition problem, ignition on but no RPM, or running normal
Technically you can use it with other ignition systems and coils so even if I ever have to ditch the Sniper EFI, I can still use the ignition box in another vehicle.

I helped a friend of mine with Marks old system put on the hyperspark dizzy and module. Setup was easy and wiring wasn't bad at all, simple swap. Don't have a ton of run time on it because it runs out of gas every 5 minutes but overall it's better then the old setup.

Got the coil too.

The HyperSpark coil is $40 and the Blaster SS is $60. The MSD coil still works so I'll keep it around as a spare. You can also use the HyperSpark coil with other systems. It comes with a pigtail to fit the coil with bare wires on the other end for wiring to other systems.

I suppose the new coil and driver make a whole lot more power than the previous ones :haha:

I guess I should have specified better. Is the holley ecu controlling the timing and better as in any noticeable differences in say power?

Never mind, I'll just shut up haha.

I haven't driven it yet. I just had everything mounted and I plugged it in to test it before I went to a lot of trouble tying up the wiring. I figured a couple blips of the throttle was a good enough test for now. Haha. This truck is too heavy, and too stock, to do burn outs anyway.

I did run it for a couple months without timing control. I can't say I honestly noticed much difference when I added it. I figure it will pay off in the long run being able to mess with timing curves and the like. If my problem had been a failed distributor, I was seriously considering just going back to a regular vacuum advance distributor.

If I notice a change with the new ignition stuff, I think it might be in the idle and off idle. I don't think I've ever added an ignition box to anything. I've always kinda thought they were a little bit like snake oil. If the Sniper didn't need some sort of coil driver, I probably wouldn't have added one now. Maybe tho I will become a believer.

On a negative note, I broke my winch putting the truck on the trailer this past weekend.

I was kinda afraid this might happen when I went to the Duraline Exoshield. Factory cable was 90' if I remember right so I went with the 100' Duraline. Shoulda went with 75'.

Got some dirt on the tires yesterday. Ran Pole Hill and the Ironclads, both trails I had attempted to run in the past but got cut short for a number of reasons.

I have to say, I'm still loving the Magnum box setup. It was fun coming down Pole Hill, Nate and I had a "slow" drag race. I won because the Magnum has the lower gear than the NP203 and Nate's rolling 42" tires courtesy of Truck Night.
