'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
What does the inside of that plug wire boot / terminal look like?

Washers and gear are out. Used 2 magnet tools to lift the gear out. No sign of pin yet.

Not sure if the shiny area is factory or maybe from the pin coming out.

Put a fork in her boys. I got magnetic oil draining out. Drain plug:

And cleaned off for reference:

This is what the sludge wiped off the plug does when it comes near a magnet:

The oil that first drained out the pan was as much silver as it was black. I'm sure that's a bunch of bearing babbitt material.

Man, sorry to see that. Well, hopefully, based on the way it shut off, you won’t have any catastrophic damage.

Is the pin hole in the gear oblong or a camera illusion?

Do you think you’ll overhaul it or change to something

I'd pull the filter and cut it open to look for debris. Magnetic fuzz on the plug isn't bearing material.

Depends on what you find in the filter but I wouldn't be against putting the dizzy back together with a new gear and pin, filling it up and seeing how it sounds. At this point you have nothing to loose.

That being said I'll keep an eye out for a fat block in southern co just in case.

Mark & Nate have talked me off the ledge. Nate and I pulled the pan and the oil pump plus rear main cap. Didn't find anything scary. Rear bearing at least looks good.

Oil pump spins freely. No indication of a problem with it.

Found the shear pin in the pan.

Had to stop for the day after we got the oil pan reinstalled. Tomorrow I'll put some oil in the motor along a functional distributor and run the motor. See if it holds good oil pressure and if there are any bad noises.

Actually it's the damn curse of the snow run. I always say more stuff gets broken on snow runs than any other.
Agreed. All those big block horse torqs getting unleashed to keep the wheelspeed up is rough on stuff.

But blaming it on the kid is pretty good too. I like that idea better.

I bet it’s fine Scott. Remember my pickup fell off last year on the trail and I kept losing oil pressure when I was nose first down obstacles? Wheeled all weekend, drove it home and found the problem. Installed a new pump and pan and it’s been fine.
