'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
We cut down the overhangs on the tool boxes so there's plenty of room. Needed done regardless of my tight fit because there wasn't going to be room for the fuel filler door.

Those pieces were only 1-1/4" tall so they don't provide much benefit in my case.

Finally finished up with the frame work.

The tailgate still needs latches and hinges, but I've got to get this painted so I can keep moving along. I'll just touchup where I need to add those items.

My father-in-law that I work with here at the sign shop has been teaching my oldest son to spray our signs. He's priming the bed frame this morning so I can top coat it here a little bit later.

Working on the top coat. It takes a lot of paint to cover all of those square tubes and angles.

Most of it is floating in the atmosphere.

When I spray stuff like that, I run a small tip, low fan and just enough air.
Father in law had Liam set up the gun that way. Unfortunately he wasn't used to the narrow fan and got some runs. But that wasn't an issue because I used SEM Rock-it bed liner.

It's a polyurethane product and because we use a PPG acrylic polyurethane paint on our signs, I could tint it with that. I color matched tan camo paint that comes in the rattle can.

In hindsight spraying the bedliner probably wasn't the best choice. Because of the relatively narrow surfaces of the tube & angle, a lot of it ended up on the ground. Doesn't help they want you to spray from 36". Might have used less bed liner if I'd rolled it on.

Ended up using the full 1 gallon kit. Still had bare spots so I top coat coated it with out acrylic polyurethane paint. Only took a quart of that.

Overall I'm happy with it at this point. We'll see how it holds up long term.

If you look close at the first picture you can see a place I missed with the paint. Liam and I both walked around it twice and still missed it. AFTER we had finished cleaning up the gun, Liam happened to notice it. :doah: Bad thing was I even had a little paint left in the pot when I was finished and could have easily gotten that spot covered. Luckily, we have a brush additive for our sign paint. I mixed that with the little bit of left over paint, and hit the spot I missed with a brush.

You got a real anti-carolina squat thing going on there. I like the overall look. Interested to see if the springs come down a little with added weight/fuel.

Great work for sure.
