'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
Still have some finish welding and grinding to do, but this is the final grill guard setup.

Once I decided to modify the bumper I've been using my idea was to keep it looking like it did only narrower. I want the truck to still roughly look like the image in my avatar. Plus the grill guard is nice for those times I have to drive by Braille.

I do have a couple of maintenence items pop up. The steering reservoir feed line to the pump is leaking. Once the reservoir was bolted down in place the angles of my fittings are off just enough it's pushing the hose off the fitting. I've got new fitting angles coming.

The other issue is minor, but my firewall starter solenoid is sticking. I had bang on it yesterday so I have a new one coming just to be safe.

You could eliminate the redundant solenoid....;)

The thought did cross my mind but I had a violent revulsion to more wiring. :rotfl: Plus I confess it was nice to not have to crawl on the ground to beat on the solenoid. :D
But you wouldn't of had to beat on the solenoid at all, it just would of started....:p

I hear you on that, did you get rid of the hinges at the fire wall?
No I still have them. I had to replace once because it had broken. The new piece doesn't quite measure up to the OE.

Now that I have some time before I need it, I might see if I can source an OE hinge at the pick n pull or something.

That’s all I have on mine as well, just need the spot where the springs mounted and the strut mounts to that then the hood piece.

When I cut my hood, it cut right through the captive nuts for the hinges. One of the things I would do different with another hood is to cut that area off the support structure first, then figure out a way to re-install it intact after the hood is cut down. So instead of just cutting through the underside bracing, I would modify it.

Would a riv nut fix this?

The biggest complication in my mind is the angle. The spot where the hinges to the hood are angled, not perpendicular to the hood. Reusing the factory mounting area eliminates the complication of matching that angle.

Today I worked on the power steering leak in the reservoir line. I think the hose was misaligned just enough to make the hose push off the fitting. Also I cut the hose just a little too short. First picture is before. Second picture is after.

I very carefully drained the reservoir into a catch can. Then proceeded to knock the can over spilling fluid all over the frame, springs, and inside of the tire. :angry1:

I also put 2 cans of primer and 3 cans of paint on the bumper and grill guard.

I use the camo khaki paint but I've found that it isn't a very durable coating. I've had rust come through it. This time I primed then put a couple light coats of good white and finished of with 2 moderate coats of the khaki. See if it holds up better.
