89 Suburban DD Build (finally a 3/4ton)

Getting closer to finishing my rough sanding. Man I'll pass on painting another GM paint fade failure. Trying to sand all the peeled layers out is a pain. Soon as that is done it goes to my dads shop to start shooting primer. heres a picture of it in my garage with the 33s off my truck sitting on it, its also on jack stands cause its really not that tall. And my truck sporting the burbs 31s (I'm hoping for better snow traction)

Ahhh... no stills looks the same. I was about ready to prime so I moved it to my dad's shop, since then I have been working Evenings and Saturdays and just haven't been able to get away to work on her. Spend most of my time in my driveway under the K10 to keep it going.

Woohoo! Actually worked on the burb today!

Forgot how much paint I still had left on. Everyone keeps telling me with this generation of vehicles paint peeling to use paint stripper and take it all off. The part I am concerned about is the lower half where it was silver, thats where the paint was peeling off the primer. I have alot of it sanded down, but I want to know if I need to go to bare metal and git rid of all the reminisce of that primer. How messy and effective is paint stripper and can you do it with out messing up on the edges of your door jams. Since I am painting it the factory color I dont want to repaint the jams.

I'm actually wanting to do the paint stripper thing too. Just worried it might screw up my driveway.

Ok well on day 3 this week back on working on this thing I decided to just push through with the sanding instead of paint stripper. I got plenty of 80 grit and I'm getting it done! Got a few hours each morning while my boy is in preschool so I've been heading up to my dad's shop and getting about 2 solid hours in. Got a good chunk of the roofed knocked out today.

Crappy cell pic, need to take my old camera and leave it up there.

Also has anyone plumbed in an extra tank to their compressor? My dad's 35 gallon husky compressor died so I brought up my 135psi 35 gallon porter cable and hooked to the tank of the husky, but I think I lost some psi, doesn't seem to spin as many RPMs on the DA.

I would be interested on how to do that with the air compressors myself. I have two big ones that the tank is good but the compressor is shot i would love more volume.
I have redone one of these GM paint failures (It was my Dad's 1987 Suburban) and I will be doing my 1989 Suburban in the future because of the same reason.
My point is I do have a suggestion for you. I started using a DA like you are but it was taking me FOREVER to get the paint off. I learned fast the hard way that chemical strippers were more of a mess then a help. What I ended up using was a wire wheel on my 4 1/2" grinder. you can get them in differing grits. (I used 80 grit and even some 60 grit in some areas) but they work alot faster then the DA, leave the same sanding marks and get right down to the metal so you don't ever have to worry about doing it again.
Then use a sealer and high build primer before your final sand and you will be golden, if you use a good quailty grinder you will be surprised how fast it will go. I thought that I didn't want to burn up my Milwaukee so I bought a cheap Harbor Frieght one to do the job..... bad idea it lasted about 4 hours. I did the rest of the suburban with my Milwaukee and it never slowed down.
Hope this helps.
If you have any questions shoot me a line I would love to help.

I got a good grinder and a wire brush never thought of it. Especially with the way the paint is on the roof. I think I'm gonna try that and then I can hit it with the DA and 80 grit afterwards. It is the roof after all. my main goal with it is to keep the new paint on it.

Short update... nothing done except its masked and I have bought the primer... ugh haven't sprayed it yet.

Question for you TBI guys... is there any good way to get the stock TBI to work on a pre 87 350? Ive been told the tbi will run too hot for an older 350. I have access to I believe an 83 350 out of a van. Soon as I get paint on this rig I need it running so I can use it.

Alright! The burb is primed!!! Friday night sprayed the epoxy and this morning got it covered up with some sand-able primer. Got a few spots to touch up and then its time to buy the colors.

I only used filler in 3 spots, two small dings on the hood and some surface rust I hit with the grinder on the back door. Looking at it in the primer, its very straight. Just sanding the multiple failing layers of clear, paint and primer was such a damn chore I am so happy to be at this point so far.

its looking great man! i wish i had the space to park mine inside and spray it.

I'm lucky that my old man lets me paint in his shop, as you can see we had to cover everything. My garage is under the bedrooms in my house so its a no go for paint.

that's cool. i'm pretty sure painting my sub in the driveway would not only be frowned upon but yield some pretty ****ty results.

Gotta love the holidays.. making it harder to budget for paint, which is making me consider going with a solid color and as well as my wife complaining about me repainted it stock.
