'90 K5 'Barney'

We’ll get there, it didn’t hit me near as hard as others that I know, luckily I didn’t have any preexisting conditions to give me other issues. Sadly my wife has been miserable and needed all of the time off she’s gotten and then some, luckily we like each other so being stuck together 24/7 has been a fun time. This year continues to keep me on my toes.

I’ve been stock piling parts slowly for the standard swap, I spent a lot of time reading and came to the conclusion I needed the advanced adapters bell housing and adapter. Ordered those today. I’m hoping to actually start this project this month (fingers crossed).

A concern of mine is the shifter tower, the trans I sourced did not come with a tower, I have this one but it doesn’t seem to want to go all the way down, am I just not inserting it right or is it wrong or am I missing something else?

There is a different version of the shifter based on which shift tower it was built for. There are tall and short versions. They don’t mix. The tall usually came on gmt800 HD trucks due to the taller frame on them from the factory.

So what year did the trans come from and what year did the shifter come from? Advance Adapters have some good information on how to ID them in the tech vault.

Seems like my '95 had that gasket/spacer that @joshuak posted.

But I have to ask, is the transmission in neutral in that picture? It looks to me that the 3-4 rail is moved.

There’s no telling what gear it’s in, I was fooling with it while taking the pictures.

Luckily, it included this tag with the vehicle info! It’s out of a ‘95 Chevy 2500.

Thanks @joshuak !

I was thinking the same thing.
That tab in the middle shouldn't be there

This is cool, I'm excited for you.

Forgot to add in previous post, you may be missing the shift tower bushings too. Link bellow.

They sell the isolator, bushing and fastners as one kit and you can save a few bucks. Will edit when I find it.

Thanks, I’ll try to find it today on lunch.

I think it will move, I know that tower seems to fit right in but without bolts I haven’t been able to verify that things are shifting smoothly. I’ll try to get that sorted out quickly, I don’t want to take apart a running driver and have it apart for months or years like I did when the crankshaft broke. :surepal:

You just need to have all of the shift rails aligned so that there is a slot all the way across for the stub to drop into. This puts the trans in neutral.
Try turning the input shaft to verify. I believe that it's in 3rd in that picture. Slide the center rail forward to see if that gives you neutral.

Will do, I planned to find/verify neutral when I was installing the shifter. I had some spare time, I found a couple kits but nothing for a 1995 so I ordered 4 bushings, one spacer, and 4 bolts. We’ll see if that works.

I have a 31 spline to swap into my transfer case.
AA bellhousing is on the way from summit.
Hydraulic pedal with a vacuum booster brake pedal.

I still need to pick up a flywheel, and clutch/slave/etc but I remember being some strangeness with the starter/flywheel when I put the motor in so I’m waiting until I get this flywheel off and can count teeth. I’m hoping to pull the column and swap pedals this weekend. We’ll see how that goes.

I imagine that you mean a 32 spline input, not 31. But I would suggest checking that it slides onto the transmission tailshaft as I believe that there is a 31 spline for some applications.

Will do. I don’t remember at this point, it’s been a long time since I picked that up. :haha:

Bellhousing came in!

I verified, shaft is 32 spline and slides onto the NV without issue. While cleaning up I found I had the spacer all along. :haha:I need to get more organized. I even put the thing in neutral, why did everyone pick up on that?

I am very familiar with the shifter tower fitment and the alignment of the forks.
I have had to remove the shifter and reset my forks in my big rig when it would jam and get stuck in 2 gears at the same time, one glance and I could tell which gears it's in :doah:

I’m still intending on doing the standard swap I swear, but I squirreled hard! Last year I actually started pulling the column out around July and dang it if we didn’t sell our house. :haha:Craziness ensued, house we had under contract fell through, blah, blah, blah. Ended up putting the column back in without the third pedal because I didn’t know where everything would end up but I knew it wasn’t happening at that location. Now we’re settled, have a baby on the way and the fuel is over a year old (thank the lord for non ethanol fuel) I’ve somehow kept it running and not allowed it to get gummed up but I never wanted to drive it because the tags are out (never mind the fact I’ve never dropped insurance off of it all this time). A wild hair hit when I got home last night and I got the high beams back in operation, for some reason high beams ran to this module of sorts mounted on the driver fender so I pulled all of that mess out, returned the headlight wiring to factory and slapped a horn button in the dash, I also removed the vacuum switch that did not work comfortably for the trans lockup and reused some random switch that was already in the dash for torque converter lockup, changed the oil and ran it down to get a state inspection this morning, all of that hard work went unnoticed because the guys I took it to checked literally nothing, but it’s now inspected! Wife and I drove it all afternoon and put 50miles on it running errands! Planning on running a tank of fuel or more through it, registering it and then seeing how I feel about ripping the transmission out of it, I just know how I am and worry about it taking forever to finish and never driving it.:haha:

I’m awfully glad I’ve hung onto it all this time, now that I’m done remodeling I have a narrow window of time before the baby comes in December that I may actually be able to pull off the transmission swap!
