'90 K5 "Project Sanity" Sold 7/5/2018

Looks good Rene! :waytogo:

It's always amazing how adding one new part can make everything around it seem a lot dirtier than it used to appear!

I feel like I'm getting spoiler info now too.... I subscribed to your Photobucket gallery (Ryoken's and Zimmers too) so as soon as the new photos land in there I get an email notification and rush over to PB to check them out!

:usaflag:

looks good Rene, dig the green.... :pimp:

this is coming up shortly for me....... your x-bar and it's mounting is pretty much what I designed too, tho I'm going with a gusseted plate shock mount.... at least thats how I drew it up... :doah:

It's not insane yet, but it's closer.

Still focussed on civil road manners and creature comfort/ergonomics.

Rene

I will be posting pics of my insanity soon. Got a new body to replace Krusty's since she was so rotted I didn't feel there was any saving her. It didn't hurt that the new body was free.

I like it alot Rene....I plan on running those same 5150's and perhaps some Daystar poly adjustable bumps in a can.
I would also like to run a bar from the A pillar downtube to the front of the frame and use a tie in across the shock mounts and the radiator support....still dreaming at this point but I really like your setup. How much did you have to cut the fenderwells if any?

This is what I cut from my inners. I do plan on some sort of rubber boot around the shock body to keep mud and debris out though. We'll see how that works out.

Lower mount, tube is capped with 1/4" stock and bolted through the existing upper shock mount bracket and holes.

Other end is welded to the frame. I guess I'm rolling the dice on this end...
I spritzed it with some rattle can black for now. In hindsight I should have masked the end of the tube off before painting. At least it's not in a very visible area.

A shot from the top to show the upper mount better. The other pic's don't really show it as it's hidden behind the X-tube mount.

I like that I can somewhat easily incorporate this into a front cage down the road a ways, or just leave it as is if that's what i choose later. I have options.

I'm about to get back on the body work. I'm gonna go with that Dupli-color stuff, it's easy, somewhat inexpensive and i like that particular green I used. They have a white too which I'll use for the hardtop and the two tone part.

Rene

Yeah it was real easy to work with. Only problem is it being lacquer based, rather than enamel. I like how the Matrix turned out on mine. Gonna load some more pics.

I just found this thread and I gotta say I read it from the beginning and I was thinking... I don't think he will be able to resist the temptation...
But then I thought, on a budget? WHat I do is use what I have available, and that is what you have a vailable so why not?
Unless those parts where supposed to go on the crew cab then no.
Good work by the way, but I prefer getting a great deal like this with no cancer in it, and here in CA, I still can from time to time.
I dealt with enough rust and body work when I was growing up in the middle east, now that I have better options I steer away from the rusted trucks.
I spend my time working on the mechanical stuff or fabricating which is what I enjoy the most.:thumb:
Anyway I will be  this thread.

Damn Rene, I just found this thread today :doah: and after spending the last hour reading through it I've got the motivation again to get back to working on my K5 after being tired of it for a while. Doesn't help that I work for a 4x4 Heep place making their chit

Very nice work indeed and look forward to more reading.

Thanks guys.

I'd prefer rust free too, but around here that isn't gonna happen for the money i had when I bought this. It isn't the rust belt here, but we have extended periods with a lot of moisture...and that isn't terribly kind to these trucks.

As for the one ton stuff etc. Yes I do have it on hand and it's paid for. So in that regard I agree I may as well use em. The Crew Cab I dunno what i'm gonna do with at the moment. It's resting in the trees at the back of the yard. :doah:

I would like to find a crew cab some day and plop it on a K-20 frame and then cut down a short bed behind it to fit. Make it all look like it came from the factory that way. Would go all period correct on the trim and stuff for a 73-80 model.

Hey if it's what you want to do, there is one in Fresno, CA with your name on it.
I am talking to the guy now because i don't want to see it go to scrap.

...and been driving the Blazer all week.

Quick pic, because I'm a whore at heart. :D

Oddly enough, 3.42's and 35's are just as crappy as 3.08's and 31's. I knew that going in to this...but the 1/2 ton diff's are just stop gap until I make up my mind on the rest of the drivetrain. I have the 60/14 with 4.56's waiting, but of course they require a whole bunch of other things other than just bolting them up. 8 lug rims, a final decision on tranny/T-case, driveshaft mods to the 1410/1410 shafts I currently have in the garage...

For now I'll keep tinkering and working on small stuff as I drive it. Hell, I might even (gasp) go wheeling this year yet. :haha:

If you can believe it I haven't been able to find a stock front bumper near me for reasonable $$. For now I'm obviously running no bumper and no front plate. Hopefully I don't get any crap flung my way before I find a bumper. Both are required equipment here...the license plate i could zip tie to the grill if I have to. The bumper is proving elusive, which I still can't believe.

Rene

When I took that Mile Marker bumper off the front of mine last summer I had a hell of a time finding the correct 89-91 front bumper. Ended up just going with a nice 80's bumper.

Now I've seen about 4 of the correct bumper for cheap.
