'90 K5 "Project Sanity" Sold 7/5/2018

Somedays sometimes hack works well:haha:

The thought of pulling the manifold, replacing the studs etc etc didn't sit well. The mantra is stock, cheap, and ready to go at the drop of a hat. Noticed a fuel leak at the new fuel filter...that's the next little fix. I think I also have to check the fuel sender wire. I was working in that area with the exhaust, and now the fuel gauge reads empty (it was at 3/8 of a tank)

Either I munged up the wire, or somebody siphoned off some of the fuel. More likely I munged the wire somehow...

The sooner I have wheelin pics in this thread the better. stay tuned for more lame repairs and updates! :haha:

So I removed the rubber floor matting and insulation under it as it was completely soaked. I'd rather live with bare floors then have it rot worse before my eyes...

Fuel pump was replaced according to the seller. I can't say I was surprised to find this:

Could just be me, but it doesn't actually appear that anything more than cutting a rat chewed hole got done. Doesn't appear that anything has been removed and replaced to my eye.

Fuel pump works, need to make a good cover plate though. I have most of an 8' bed around here, so I cut a somewhat square chunk of it, deburred the edges and radiused the corners. Then drilled 10 holes in the lower portions so the screw heads would not get snagged by anything being slid into the bed.

I will be adding a small bead of sealer around the perimeter. If and when it needs a fuel pump replaced access will be easy enough.

Is the tech in this thread putting anyone to sleep yet? :p:

If I ever do need to swap pumps I will be removing all the fangs from that hole. I about started spontaneously bleeding just looking at all those sharp edges.

It does appear large enough for the job though.

The PO of my 87 also cut a 8X8 square in the bed as well...fortunately he also welded tabs to the portion he cut out allowing it to fit back in the cut out. I used some gum type seal strip to keep weather out. I've changed my fuel pump and was glad to have the easy access...way easier than dropping the tank.

Internet procedure for replacing fuel pump

Tools you will need:

1. New Fuel Pump
2. Can opener

:D

Can opener would probably have been cleaner. I think they drilled holes all the way around until they could pry the rat chewed piece out. Must have taken quite a while...

Oh well, it'll be a wheeler.

this thread is becoming a new standard.....nice Rene...

It looks like it would have been easier to drop the tank then cut that freakn' hole.
Holy s**t, that is fuuny.

Looks like Rene's having "fun".....

I'm in the same boat, looking at the Suburban I got recently, and finding all the things I overlooked when I "inspected" it before I bought it..Why is it you always see more faults AFTER its home sitting in your driveway anyway??..

After crawling around under it awhile,I was not happy to discover the inner rear wheel arches had been rotted and covered up with tarpaper and roof cement,it was peeling off so I removed it,now I can stick my arm up inside the rear quarters and touch the windows on both sides..I'm not looking forward to patching that area up,no aftermarket rust repair panels are available for the inside of the wheel arch,so I may have to cob up some from galvanized sheet metal (AKA "stovepipe"!) or maybe I'll try using inner tubes slit to the right shape and screw them on,and bury them with more tar..this thing will never be "pretty",the doors are starting to blister on the bottoms, and a few spots in the rockers and doglegs under the doors are about ready to pop through(from the tires slinging salt in there thanks to the rotted wheel wells)..

I was not happy to see it still has ALL its OEM brake lines, with the springy wrapping on them, but at least whoever had this thing blasted the underside with tar often, its pretty thick in places, like 1/2" or more!..I'd rather see tar that rot,and I dont mind getting it on my hands and clothes ,better than rust flakes falling in your eyes!..the former owner said he spent a lot on the brakes, the calipers look recent, and the hoses look like they might be a few years old (maybe when he said it had "new lines" he meant rubber hoses?)...

A few other things I noticed I wasn't pleased with was the brand new radiator some jerk tried using those nylon things to put the tranny cooler in with,I hate those dam things, and whoever did it gave up on pushing them through about halfway--I'm surprised the radiator core isn't BONED ,looks like I'll be rigging up another way to secure the cooler to the radiator support..It also looks to have some kind of aftermarket tranny filter in one of the cooler lones, that lookes like a finned gas filter, and it looks like tranny fluid has been leaking there, its all oily and gooey..I'm wondering if that might be clogged up,and possibly causing the tranny's "losing reverse and OD when hot" symptoms??..

I also noticed the drivers side exhaust manifold is about as rotted as my 82 pickup's 6.2 is,and the studs & nuts look like they'll never come off,and the front pipe is really salt pitted there just like my truck was too--I had to "splice" an elbow onto the "stub" of the old pipe onto my truck .no frigging way was I going to mess with those nuts and studs!..also,the oil cooler lines where they come out of the block look just like my trucks too--rotted to death and ready to pop anyday..:(--oh well,at least the oil pan aint rotted through on the Burb yet!..

I had a chance to get "most" of a plow setup for it for 100 bucks, but I figured I'd better get a tranny or fix that one first--no sence in buying a plow I cant push with it,right??...whether I'll ever be able to afford to actually fix this Burb AND be able to put it on the road is still pretty "iffy"..:( beginning to wonder if I should have gotten it now...
