'90 K5 "Project Sanity" Sold 7/5/2018

Console isn't even fibreglass, just plastic. :haha:

I'm 90% sure on the need for extra support bars.

I have it painted satin black now. Tomorrow I'll get the console and floor drilled for cable pass through, then mount it permanently. I'll see how rigid the assembly is after that. I think I'll probably need to add some bracing from the front overhang down to the floor. The console isn't bad, but it is just plastic.

How many gears does that transmission have? LOL...

I tired looking up a YouTube video on Winters shifters to understand that crazy shift pattern... Is every shift spring loaded to queue up individual manual up shifts?

:dunno:

Man, that's some fancy and really nice fab work! Did Nick do it for you, for it to come out so nice? :flipoff7:

No really, it's awesome to see the king back in the shop burning some stuff in..:waytogo: :D

Momma should be happy with the cup holders, they came out nice.:thumb:

Just the feel of those shifters is awesome, isn't it? I've used my cup holders a ton already slam shifting that f#cker in the garage, making vroom vroom noises in the wee hours after a good day fabbing with some beer fridge visits. :pimp: :haha:

It's a 4L60e so 4 forward gears...

The shift handle has some sort of detent ball at the base. When you move it sideways it snaps over to lean the other way. It will stay up against either side of the gate...it's not always trying to hug one side. I hope that makes some sense? Beyond that, the rest of it is all controlled by the steel gate stops. You can't miss a shift, or accidentally bump it into another gear. There is no ratchet involved though.

Before I began the 5.3 saga (might as well...) I had pitched the worn column shift into the junk trailer. It was a sloppy as a SM465. At the time I installed a B&M uni-shift detent shifter. It looked OK, but the detents were very vague and it seemed to me that B&M was counting on the tranny detents to provide 'feel'. I hated that shifter immediately.

Well, Nick worked 4:00 am to 6:30 pm yesterday, after a 4:30 am til midnight the day before. He did make it over for a cold one last night...

It was a good day out there yesterday, and good to have a small fab project to do. Deb was pretty impressed with the whole thing, which was cool for me. Nice to get an 'attaboy' from the boss now and then.

I originally considered a fully fabbed console, until I saw how well the shifter fit into the front part of the factory one. Anyways, heading back out there in a few, so more pics later. :waytogo:

Well, as I suspected the shifter needed some more support than the console alone could provide. It just didn't feel as firm as it should. I picked up a bit of 3/4" OD tubing and fabbed a pair of stand-off's bolted to the overhang at the front and down to the floor.

Just finished pics...

Here you can see the cable retainer frame of the shifter and the cable routing through the bottom of the console and floor. It has a nice gentle curve...

Finished!

Working with that tiny tube was an exercise in patience. Damned finicky to say the least, but I'm happy with the end result. :waytogo: The shifter feels very firm now, I wouldn't hesitate to slam gears with it...

This vid shows the way it shifts. The shifter in this vid looks to be more rock crawler oriented (no gate between 1st and reverse) and is three speed reverse pattern...still gives you the idea.

that's what I got in the Maiden, works great but you gotta be aware of the no R lockout on it!

Installed the high mount AC deal from Dirty Dingo yesterday. Very nicely built, the machining quality is top notch. :waytogo:

My R4 AC compressor left with the TBI 350 I sold to Russel and got chucked. Made a trip to the boneyard yesterday afternoon with Nick. I needed some stuff Russel wanted me to get so he could get the wiring harness done. Having a wish list at a boneyard, is sometimes more like wishful thinking. However, fate smiled on us yesterday...the first truck we saw was a TBI'd C10 that had hardly been picked over yet. I found and grabbed the firewall side of the fuse block wiring. Nick got a few small things off of that as well. Then we see a '94 ish pick-up a little ways away. It's very complete under the hood, including the R4 compressor I need. When we undid the lines there was still a lot of pressure in the system, so I figured the compressor is likely still good.

Last request was an ECM mount from a mid 2000's S-10. Very next row, first truck we find has the right mount. Overall I was pretty tickled to find everything. Scoped out a few Ford Exploder's. I'm planning on running a disc'd 8.8 in my 57 Pontiac. I need to do a bit more research first, but at least they look to be common at this yard.

Got home and started on the Dirty Dingo AC mount install. What a nicely built kit...no issues whatsoever.

Now I need to fin the correct belt. DD has em listed on their site, but the site was down for maintenance this morning.

After that went so smooth Nick and I figured we'd finish hooking up the Winter's shifter. Nick stripped the factory junk off the 4L60e and got the brackets installed when we hit a snag on the cable. I slid under to have a look and saw we needed to find another inch of slack in the cable. I broke out my 3/4" holesaw and added two more holes in the floor to create an oval hole and gain some slack. That got us what we needed, and cable adjustment after that was a breeze.

One task at a time...

Russel is coming over in two weeks to get the wiring installed and we'll get the fuel system hooked up with the various adapters etc then too.

Are you going to run the stock air tube? I have been wanting to know if it will clear a high mount ac.

Going to run battery on driver's side, air tube stuff to pass side. I don't have any of the stock stuff...going to look at the wrecking yard next time I'm there and see what I can find. I might end up doing some sort of BS cold air set-up. :dunno:

I just swapped my air intake to the other side on my 1988 V10 Suburban when I did a serpentine setup. There is a punch out for the top hat on the other side on the '88 radiator support, not sure on the '89-'91 support.

Probably not, because the '89-'91 uses that odd plastic intake housing next to the radiator.

The previous owner of the 91 core support going on my truck added an air intake to it so he could run dual intakes? I have some options either way.

The stock 90 core support I had had the intake tube cutout on the passenger side beside the radiator and the flex intake tube hooked into it. There is a pic of that much earlier in this thread. I'll dig it up and re-post it.

Really crappy cell phone picture, but here is what I did. Not that you have a round air cleaner on the top of your engine........
