'90 K5 - The Nevada Blazer [Post 1437: School me on alternators)

i think those banddages are called steri-strips, have used em on my kids cuts a couple times. new-skin works pretty good too

This last weekend we camped over night at the Wind Caves. Definitely one of my favorite places in the world. I've been there 4 or 5 times now, but this is the first time we camped. Went with another couple and had an amazing time. Here's a couple pics.

It got kind of cloudy after we came back from crawling around on the rocks, so the colors aren't as rich, but still nice photos.

We brought a smoker and smoked salmon. My wife makes an unbelievable marinade for smoked salmon. We also had corn on the cob, salad and wine. Damn good dinner for camping! :D We made extra salmon and brought it back. I've been savoring it for the past couple days.

Fun stuff!

As Claire's little brother describes it: "It's a little less awesome than Arches National Park, but way more fun." (Because you can explore, unrestricted, and few people know that this place exists, so you're nearly guaranteed to be alone out there. Plus, you need a decent 4x4 to get there, as the hike wouldn't be enjoyable.

Looks awesome Colby!

Do you guys ever worry about snakes...or do ya never see any. :dunno:

They scare the heck outta me! :eek1:

Yes, we worry a bit about snakes. Last November Claire nearly stepped on a baby rattler. Otherwise, I haven't seen any poisonous snakes (Rattlers are the only ones we have here.) I've read up a lot on rattle snake bites, and they're actually not all that dangerous. The baby rattlers are what worry me a bit. I was more uncomfortable about them than usual this trip, though, because I've read that their population is expected to be much larger this year due to our dry winter. At some point, though, I end up deciding that my fear of getting bit isn't going to ruin my time exploring and I just go for it. Don't really know what else to do about it. I worry more about the dog than myself, but even then, they're not that dangerous to dogs. I keep the emergency vet hospital information close at hand, and I could be there within an hour from that area, which makes me feel better.

Well I don`t blame you for worrying about it...I was just thinking that you guys are out there allot and the chance of seeing them would be fairly good/bad.

I would love to go to the spots you guys go but my wife would see one snake or even hear about someone that seen one and we would never be able to go there again.

Be careful and keep posting...you being there is almost as good as going ourselves. :D

Awesome pics as usual man!

Well, you could just leave her in the truck. :D If you find your way down here sometime, I'd be glad to show you a trail or two with incredible landscapes!

I am jealous of your spots to go wheeling being so close at hand.

My best friend and I were Dove hunting in that area back in the day and his dog got bit right on the nose. Poor ol' Abby had to be loaded up in the truck and driven all they way to Doyle Ca. which just happened to be closer than Reno. She made it but she was sick as a........well.....dog for a few days and her face was so swollen she looked like a balloon with eyes!

Another time he and I were out there he got out of the truck and stepped right on top of a huge rattler. He just happened to pin it head with the heal of his boot. Out came my KaBar and off came the buzz worm's head. I don't do snakes. Just the thought of them sends a drop of urine down my leg.

Glad the dog turned out OK. Sad to see a good dog hurting.

That's rad! Not sure I'd have the calm state of mind to just stand there... hope I do if I have to!

Lol. :haha:

Thanks! She's a good adventure buddy. We're taking her backpacking for 4 days and camping for another 3 next week. :D She's looking at me rather mournfully as I write this, because we're in our apartment and she's bored. If only she knew what's in store. :haha: The backpack trip will be about 50 miles of hiking, and then camping on a river means lots of swim time - so she'll be getting plenty of exercise again soon enough. Leave tomorrow.

What are your plans for carrying a spare tire? I know on your old truck you were in the process off making a bumper/tire carrier. And I'm sure that it won't fit in the bed with that tool box in there. It would also be a pain to get it up on your rack and then having to take it down when you use it.

I'm thinking to do a swing out tire carrier. But, that won't happen for quite a while. I actually think that the spare would fit between the tool box and my tail gate if the top weren't on the truck. I'm planning to try that out in a couple weeks when I get back from a trip to see if I can carry it that way for my trip to the Rubicon in August. But, that's a short term solution.
