'90 K5 - The Nevada Blazer [Post 1437: School me on alternators)

Colby, I envy you in so many ways :D I hate being stuck in such a beautiful place with no one to take out to enjoy it with... Just isn't the same going somewhere breathtaking by yourself. Its nice for about 5 minutes, but not really worth the effort of going there just on your own, LOL!

I fully understand the constant desire to change directions in life. I've got a great career started, have everything I could only dream of having a few years ago, but still long to go somewhere else and do something else with my life. I think it is just a matter of the grass looking greener on the other side mixed with a strong sense of lust for wandering... I can see what drove our ancestors to get into rickety little boats to sail across oceans just to see what was on the other side, I'd absolutely have been one of those sailors that joined in for the adventure!

This afternoon I got my steering brace installed, finally. First time I went to install it I didn't have a power drill to open up the hole in the front crossmember for the bolt to go through. Second time I went to install it, I found that the stock bolts were too short. I had assumed that since they have those fatty washers that they would be long enough with the brace. Nope. So, I went to Napa today and picked up some grade 8 bolts, washers, lockwashers and got that sucker installed late this afternoon. Glad to know it's there keeping everything square. :D

I bought it used, it's an Autofab brand brace. $25. :D

Going wheeling Saturday. Nothing serious, just really harsh desert service roads out to some ancient petroglyphs in some slot canyons. Should be great. Likely to be snow too. :D

Well, I haven't driven it much since installing. A couple blocks maybe. I was also wondering if I would notice anything stiffen up. I didn't in the couple blocks. I don't anticipate that I'll be able to tell any difference, though. This truck is in crazy great shape, so I doubt it was loose. It is only 21 years old, anyway. If you look at that pic, you'll notice there's not even any grease or nasty garbage on the frame. Just some dirt left over from a quick little romp in the mud from a wheeling trip a few weeks back. So, I doubt the frame was really flexing anyway. This install is more of a preventative install, preparing for getting the 38" tires under there hopefully in January.

By the way, I bought a Dana 60. :D We'll see if I can get the funds pulled together by January for gears and the other lift-associated items that I don't already have.

Yeah, my cell phone does wonders under the engine bay... :wink1: :haha:

I presume you're talking about my sig pic? yes, I was very pleasantly surprised with how nice it is. I wish I had taken it with a real camera instead of my wife's phone, because then it would be worth printing. Probably one of my favorite pics of Chevy trucks, but it'll just suck as a printed image.

I put a bolt on brace on my M1008 pickup a few years ago and noticed a difference. Then again it had 38" tires and hadn't lived the nicest life in the military even though it only had 50k on it.

When I put mine on my '89 K5 last year I noticed less of a difference. Seemed a bit crisper but that was it. About the same as when I put the XJ steering shaft on.

Well speaking of your sig pic, I hope to see that in this years calendar...

:) Unfortunately, and iPhone wouldn't provide an image with high enough quality for the calendar. Maybe a similar image can be made. I found my camera battery charger today... :doah:

Today Claire and I went out with CK5er "alexsdad" to the Lagomarsino Petroglyphs just outside of Reno. The wheeling was pretty mild, but you sure wouldn't want to be driving your wife's pretty grocery getter SUV to get there. The road is ROUGH! Totally worth the rough drive though.

Got to see a herd of wild horses on the way out. I sure love living in a place where there are wild horses. That's just rad.

Here's a few pics of the Petroglyphs site. I can post more if anyone cares to see more, but it gets a bit monotonous in photographic form...

Claire almost stepped on this baby rattler. :yikes: Sucker wasn't even old enough to have a rattle just yet... the most dangerous. Claire was great tho. Didn't freak out, realized that rattlers aren't all that dangerous and she walked away calmly!

Even ancient people liked their huti (plural of hutus...) :haha:

We ended up taking a short detour down a stream bed on the way back out. I really like this truck, it wheels great even in stock form. :D

This is looking down towards the reno area as we were coming back down the mountains. Very purty indeed.

All in all, a very pleasant day. :woot:

More pics of that other k5. I kinda like that color.

Love the pics. Would love to go wheeling in that area sometime. Life goals I suppose.

Yeah, alexsdad's truck is really cool. He's got an '87 on one tons, 37" tires, crossover steering, DIY4x rear bumper, etc. Nice truck. Because I'm the newbie to the area, though, I'm always the follower right now as he's showing me around the desert which means photo ops of his rig in action are few. His color of Blazer is my favorite color scheme with blue on grey close behind. I'd like to repaint my truck to a blue on grey version...

Your dog looks just like the one I had. Beautiful dog and so friendly!

Yeah I like the red and grey one, and I like yours too Colby, but I miss seeing the green one.

Sweet pics as always!:waytogo:

fantastic man! finally read the whole thread! i look forward to seeing it completed!lift and diff anyways!are we ever complete? i dont think so!

I'm having a problem with two latches.

(1) The passenger door lock is sticky and rarely will unlock if I use the button on either the driver or passenger doors. If I use the key in the passenger door, it requires more force in turning the key than it should. How should I start diagnosing this problem? Anything in particular I should be looking for?

(2) My hood keeps popping open. This is typically when going over a driveway apron or some such thing where the suspension flexes a little bit. Oddly, this has never happened while wheeling, though I've had the suspension really flexed out in the desert.

Help? :D

Tried any graphite lube for the door lock?

NAPA sells a small spray can of graphite door lube that I swear by. Works great for old gummed up locks and one spray before winter keeps them from freezing up from the outside.
